Unreal Tournament 4/2015

I doubt Epic cares. They are making more money now then they have in the past 20 years.

You'd think they hire more developers....

Just hire some of the more productive community developers even. They might take it a lot more seriously if they're getting a paycheck out of it.

Man, screw Epic, First it was the crappy UT 3, then they teased us with endless update cycles for a promising UT 4, now that's dead all in the name of the Fortnite cash machine. Fuck them. NOBODY will remember Fortnite in 20 years. Everyone remembers Unreal Tournament.

This is a shame.

I tried it out like two years ago and it was shaping up pretty damn well....

You won't but I'm sure the 12 year olds playing it today will.

Problem with UT in 2018 that it didn't have 20 years ago is that games must now drive so many other different sources of revenue. E-Sports, merchandise, loot boxes, in game appearances, stores, etc. The base price of a video game has been the same for over 10 years - there's a reason for that. My guess is that Epic is just calculating Fortnite as a much safer bet now rather then take all of these different aspects and try and bake it into a game that being played by a majority of now "old" dogs who remember the game from 20 years ago whom they don't want to offend.

I guess so, its a shame money gets in the way of imagination and everything else...

lol, fortnite is way bigger than UT ever was.

Even if they continued to work on UT until it was finished, it wouldn't matter. Old school fps deathmatch / arena type games have been dead on arrival for more than a decade. Nowadays it's objective based shooters which capture and keeps audiences around.

Ditching development on it was actually the smart thing to do, even if fortnite did not exist. Even indies are avoiding the genre, seeing as all the 'old school arena shooter' indie games in recent times all failed to maintain a playerbase, even the ones which had decent quality/hype around them.

I dunno if it is "larger" per se, the reach of the game is greater now but so are the ways of communicating it through mobile versions, streaming more ad's across more platforms. Gaming back in 99 was LAN parties and word of mouth for the most part. Gaming magazines in print. And with all that starting it out UT99 and Quake were very popular titles. Scale up in today's world and it would be pretty huge.

I think the main difference now is that the devs never look for a long term project anymore. They look for the instant win which is not bad from a money perspective but if they put a bit more up front and draw the life out of the games they will do a lot better. Fortnite may have that power if they can keep it interesting but I am not confident they can keep it going. Look at PUBG, top of the world until they went live and stopped development and listening to the players.

The new Quake game drew in a decent audience for what it was. UT2k4 had the soccer match and UT99 had the assault mode which back then were not super popular vs DM. Now though, I think the tastes have shifted a bit.

I'm not sure ditching development was the best long term goal, but they had drawn it out so long and let it stagnate not sure of what to do with it that yeah it probably was for the best. If they had focused in we might have a good game with a decent player base and be able to grow it a bit. I mean even Counterstrike has a BR mode now and its not too bad.

If they're making such a huge fortune off of Fortnite, then how is it that they can't hire a new team to finish up UT?

That would decrease profit margins a few percentage points, though. They have a lavish lifestyle they need to maintain, don't you know.

Why didn't they just add base-building/battle-royal to UT?

You can't just focus on core legacy things and expect it to make a comeback...

They put everyone on Fortnite and hired more people for Fortnite. Basically anyone qualified to do games is on Fortnite. It's making them over $300 million a month they can't afford to risk losing any of that on other projects.

The good news is they'll have plenty of money to do whatever they want with UT once Fortnite stabilizes.

"Once Fortnite stabilizes." The rate at which they're raking in money with Fortnite they could develop and release 40 AAA games without breaking a sweat monetarily.

You can't magically poof in a team of people capable of doing it.

Seems they're shelving just about everything except Fortnite. All of their resources are going toward that game and their store. That kinda sucks if you're a fan of their other franchises, but it makes sense from a business perspective. You have to cash in while the iron is hot, and it's not like anything else is going to be able to touch Fortnite. Will people care about it in 15 years like they do Unreal? Tough to say, and I'm not sure it matters.
At least you have something right now. The poor souls hoping for Half-Life 3 would kill for something as far along as UT4.

Well, that kind of depends. Microsoft is magically poofing in an ex-Sony studio to make exclusives for them now. Epic could easily acquire a successful studio if they really wanted to. It may or may not actually work out or lead to any decent titles, but they could get talent at the drop of a hat if they wanted.

If by magically poofing we mean spending money.
