Epic Games Store

The fees they charge are much smaller than what Steam charges. I am all for more competition in the distribution space, developers get to keep more of their profits and maybe - just maybe - they may pass some of those to consumers......

OP their launcher existed long before Fortnite became a big hit. Also considering Fortnite is the biggest game in the world right now, (something like 200 million active users and 10mil concurrent players) - the epic client is probably already more widely installed than most of the other gaming platforms you might already have on your system.

As the guy above said, it's going to be interesting to see how the other platform's respond, 88% is a fair jump in the content creator's direction.

And if developer is using their (Unreal) engine then the fee drops from 12% to 7% - as Epic essentially absorbs the 5% Unreal engine fee on their platform.

Yeah, that will never happen. Just look at how greedy these publishers are already.

I am aware of that, but until now the launcher only peddled Epic's small library of games and Unreal engine assets. It was never a competitor to steam or any other digital platform, but now Epic is revamping the launcher into a proper storefront with the ostensible purpose of taking Steam's lunch money.

Subnautica is being given away for free from 14 Dec, and Super Meat Boy from 28 Dec.

yeah, I was looking at that. it seems that to get epic store launched they are going to do temporary exclusives. Ashen seems to be really good also

I'm in a few discord chats that have switched to exclusive on epic after the store launched last night and the devs pulled their game from steam. People acting like they're switching from windows to linux exclusive. "OMG I refuse to buy this game if it's on epic launcher."

Ugh.

While it is nice to have a majority of my games on steam, I already have the epic launcher installed, but more so even if I didn't, I'd be more than happy to support the developer with like 20% more revenue by making the move if I was already wanting the game in the first place.

I think the current Epic store kind of sucks and leaves much to be desired, but I don't really care about tracking hours, achievements, etc etc, I just want to play the damn game and it'll let me do that.

Epic has had a game launcher for some time anyway. I had to load it for shadow complex remastered, which is a good game. I fired it up today and it went through 5 update cycles, which kind of sucked, but I guess the whole thing was done in preparation for the store launch

Ashen dev has been promoting the game on Steam and enjoying free publicity for over a year with a store page and discussions. Then Epic throws some Fortnite money at them to make Ashen an Epic exclusive, and with no communication to Steam users, they agree.

It better be a big bribe check to offset the lost Steam sales, because selling 1000 copies on Epic at 88% profit ($35,191) < 100,000 copies on Steam at 70% profit ($2,799,300).

I'm not sure Epic paying developers to keep titles off of Steam is really "increasing competition" so much as trying to add another monopoly. One of the reasons Steam is respected is /because/ Valve hasn't used lame console tactics and demanded exclusivity.

CD Projekt tried the same with thronebreaker, I don't think it worked that well for them in terms of sales. They did add it to steam some time later, but it may have hurt their overall sales.

Same , in Ashen’s case I didn’t even know about it on steam because I don’t bother to look at upcoming games on steam because it’s full of 1000 shit titles for every one decent upcoming game.

Saw it announced last nite , watched a couple folks playing it , and bought it and loved the few mins I got to play it.

I’ve got a job and wife and kids , and don’t have the time , nor care for that matter , to bitch about a developer changing publisher.

I’m sure Valve will survive financially and there’s likely better things to worry about.

well, I think valve has been taking a lot of things for granted. now that other companies are making their own cash printing machines.... they may actually decide to do something with HL3.

Checked it out, meh, just another digital storefront. Perhaps they'll eventually add some bells and whistles, but it's pretty much just a boring web page at this point.

Steam is a big successful monster and I'd argue that the only way to compete with it is to copy it. In my mind, Steam just has this great community presence with the forums, broadcasts, achievements, holiday events and badges; I probably forgot some things, oh yeah, everyone already using it.

Good luck to these folks.

Steam is a double edge sword reviews are part of the problem with steam.
Good reviews are very hard to find of late. Which isn't good for developers..

that is not true at all, all you have to do is look at good games :)

but granted, people pissed off are going to complain the loudest

I think at this point they are too late to the party, while they do already have a huge customerbase thanks to Fortnite but a lot of the bigger companies have their own storefronts now, but maybe for smaller companies/indies this might be usefull.

How is the epic store return policy?
Bad. People are reporting that they are requesting your IP address when you file for a refund. Sounds like they are trying to make the process as cumbersome as possible to prevent people from doing it. It's one of the things Epic could be in legal trouble for in the EU and other international markets if they're selling there yet.

I cant even get the game to work there. I launch the game and it opens the Oculus app for some reason and then the game just goes to a black screen with a blue cursor.

EDIT: It turns out the game wants to launch in VR but VR is broken. You have to unplug VR for the damn game to launch.

So steam is having the big sales, probably lots of other games that are not on sale are also selling well. gotta wonder how the ashen devs are feeling right now since they are not a part of any of it. Is it worth it?

David Galindo of Vertigo Gaming Inc. posted a blog on Gamasutra on why he thinks the Epic Store is not good for anyone in its current state. A counter point to all the other indie devs gushing over the larger cut of sales they're getting from Epic.<article redacted>

Decent article, but really seems to mostly be complaining that Epic's launcher isn't better / equal to Steam on day one., and that it's going to hurt customers if it's not. Really, all I want from a launcher is to not eat a bunch of resources and to allow painless download and patching of software. Anything else is a bonus. But, I might be a weirdo, I don't care about included message boards, achievements, or just about any other things Steam has added.

Personally I think the main 2 things missing in Epic's store are a discussion/tech support per game forum and reviews. Those are the most important things to me when I am deciding if I am going to buy a game especially new titles. That's the place to look to see if the game is missing my requirements (like Invert Y option). I don't particularly like having discussion/tech support forums for each game on the all the different developer's sites, it's much more convenient if like with GoG/Steam that I can go look at them via my client so no extra logins are required.

Repeating Blade-Runner's comment; Subnautica is free and really wroth taking a look at. Survival stuff isn't my bag, but this is interesting and beautiful.

And the devs tend to remove anything that's not positive, so they aren't generally a reliable place to get information.

I've never used Steam forums. The few times I've seen them they're practically dead. And the quality of responses are the same as elsewhere if not worse, as they're just other customers and typically rabid fanboys. I prefer proper forums, but reddit has largely taken over for most games. Anything you can get from Steam forums you can get from the games reddit.

The only way to get rid of Epic is boycott them the fact that games are cheaper on Epic boggles the mind. I might have purchased Metro Exodus on Steam.
I for sure won't purchase it on Epic unless Epic overhauls their launcher and makes it like steam with reviews. You don't have any reviews on Epic nothing that tells you if the game is worth your time. So if the game has a bug ect.. you are totally out of luck.

The thing is with the game ASHEN people are using the STEAM message board for communication because Epic doesn't have anything.

Crazy stuff, Epic must be seriously splashing some mega cash to get developers to forego potentially lucrative income streams from being on steam.

It's possible.

More easily:

It wouldn't take much to undercut Valve's cut on the thing. I do think Valve is overdue to face reality on some things including a stagnant and bloated client with an clunky interface and way too many shitty games allowed on there but I digress (and I know I'm probably going to get in trouble but that's just too damned bad ;) ) :I realize Epic has had some successes and Fortnite is this runaway hit but... at some point the Fortnite fad has to run its course and then what? Are they really THAT big time and special now just because of Fortnite? That huge?

Ubisoft makes a little more sense to me. You are stuck with Uplay no matter what but they also sell their games on other platforms. Fine. The more the merrier. Sell on a trillion fronts and watch the money roll in.

I just don't get this "go to Epic exclusively" thing at all for some of these outfits. It's nothing against Epic or anyone else. I just don't quite get all this.

I also think we're headed to silly land where we're all going to have a dozen clients for practically every gaming publisher.

I know right. Looking at reviews on other websites is the end of the world.

Spell Break is looking to be a Epic exclusive and that game looked pretty good. Epic store needs a ton of custom features like no launch at Startup =)

You can uncheck "Run When My Computer Starts" in the Epic Games Launcher's settings if that's what you're referring to.
