Windows 10 1809 update can break Broadwell-E overclocking

Just FYI the Spectre/Meltdown updates that were issued in an update prior to W10 version 1809 are included in the update and cannot be disabled. Without a BIOS update with the most recent Intel microcode update for X99 motherboards, this can break overclocking features.

Problem is a lot of bios support has ended depending on brand. I think Asus has an update.

There is a way to create a custom bios with the latest Intel mcu if one is not already available, but obviously it's not simple to do and can have severe consequences if done incorrectly.

Weird.. one of my work machines have an 5960X running win10 1809, disabled spectre and meltdown with inspectre no issues with overclocking and/or bios feature on Sabertooth X99.

Took my 5930K up to a heady yet "safe" 4.2GHz and the RAM from 2133 to 2400 to see if I was unlucky, and fortunately no issues here. My X99-A USB 3.1 has an update for Spectre/Meltdown, but never installed it. Your board should too. ASUS is decent about supporting their boards with new microcode or CPU support after most manufacturers call it quits.

The bug apparently doesn't affect Haswell-E. Just Broadwell-E (6800k, etc). So it seems to be linked to the microcode itself for those CPUs. I have a 6800k and my clocks were stuck at 3.8 Ghz. Updating the bios with the most recent microcode fixed it.

My 5960x can still overclocked at 4.3ghz with latest Windows 10 update.

See below repost of post above you:

Us Haswell-E users are not affected by this bug. Hopefully Intel and Microsoft have a big enough can of RAID to kill it! *rimshot*

Well apparently the new 1903 update is at it again breaking overclocking for Broadwell-E owners. Most motherboard suppliers managed to push a microcode update in the bios that fixed the overclocking problem in 1809. There is no such microcode from intel or bios out there right now to correct this. Until then I rolled back to 1809. This is really making me hate intel.
