Australia Passes World's First Anti Encryption Law

One thing that people need to realise is that in Australia there are a lot of people here that either do not understand what they are giving up and are willing to sacrifice a lot of privacy just to be "safe". Its just a different mentality of the people, more people seem to trust authority here compared to say the USA.

At this point, it doesn't matter whether it is the left boot or the right boot that's on your neck, we need to throw out the whole shoe rack and try again
While its pretty much a guarantee unless Labor has leadership spill that the government will change at the election. Labor still supported this bill through parliament so they are no better.

Easy way to handle this. Microsoft, Apple, Google, etc all just say they cannot comply with the law and give the ultimatum that they will pull out of Australia entirely if required.
Everyone around the internet keeps suggesting this but it wont happen. If Apple left there would be 1000s of jobs gone and they wouldnt want to deal with that PR. All the companies will likely make a variant of their product for the Australian market and we will also get less and less products to chose from as less companies will ship their whole range.

Once again, Australia proves it's the biggest joke on the internet.

I don't get why Australia is so authoritarian with national defense. Who the hell wants to invade that country? Do terrorists even know about that country?
The news is busting for us to be a target. They jump on anything that puts us on the world stage and make a mountain out of every ant hill.

You guys are attacking Australia for passing this law? You've never heard of the Clipper Chip?

And for those who are laying this all on the 'right', the Clipper Chip was championed by the Clinton administration. This is why party affiliation is bad - all parties contain good people with bad ideas, bad people with good ideas, and dirt bags with selfish ideas. Don't align yourself with a party. Align yourself with your beliefs, and then make sure that everyone who holds your beliefs speaks only the truth, historically and factually.

I know who is to blame.

And i am not kidding half of out internet infrastructure are Huawei brand

Look at that Commonwealth politeness and decency, passing a law and all. Meanwhile, other countries just invade your privacy even when it's illegal to do so.

Who says that polite commonwealth isn't doing the same thing already? ;) Laws are just formalities.

By the way, it's not about Right or Left, Conservatism or Liberalism. It's about Authoritarianism vs. Libertarianism. It's where you stand on the "freedom" vs. "safety" scale (not that a powerful government will necessarily make you more safe). These days, far too many people are willing to give up their freedoms to feel safe, and that's not helped by the number of organizations and ideologies that are telling them that giving them up *will* make them safe.

I expect that this is going to happen here in the US of A before too long. Australia is basically a trial balloon on this issue.

This is the conservative ("right wing") government.
The "government" doesn't have a majority, this has veen a bipartisan assault on the rights of companies and individuals.

Very much a continued theme here.

Not to mention, that those who have pursued laws like these in the U.S. have also always been conservatives. Patriot Act was driven by the Bush administration.

Civil liberties are under constant attack from the right under the name of fighting terrorism or law and order.
Civil liberties are under constant attack from both primary parties in the USA. It depends on the rights in question.

Republicans typically find ways to hinder the 4th and 14th amendment under the guise of providing more security, while the Democrats typically find ways to hinder the 1st and 2nd amendment under the guise of social issues and safety.

I prefer the Ben Franklin line of thinking:
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
In other words, I believe the founding fathers would agree our modern political parties suck when it comes to not infringing on constitutional rights. :D

This is a very bad law, but what you get when you keep voting for lefties/socialists/communists.
You're a moron. These policies are always pushed by law enforcement and intelligence agencies. They are overwhelmingly conservative in every Western country. Not that it matters, because a shit law is a shit law.

Great way to handicap existing Aussie businesses on the international level and discourage overseas companies from bringing jobs there.
Well considering the government has already achieved this goal via the demolition of the real NBN (i.e. distroying a rebuilding of the aging and past its useby date copper network with a full FTTH one instead of continuing on with the already 4year-underway-about-to-ramp-up FTTH build), they may as well fuck us over on the software side of things as well!

There goes journalism and freedom of speech in ozzie land.
we haven't had either of those for a while. Sure... you can tell the government they are pigs or whatever... but if you actually make real waves... its off to the gulag for you and they come down on you like a ton of bricks if you do something they don't like that pushes against their vested interests (or if it risks waking up to many sheep).

Do terrorists even know about that country?
They actually quite love the .au as targets. But don't tell that to the public.. they are to busy letting them in by the droves so they can acheive their goeals more easily. Hell.. we've even got sharia law in a few cities and if an australian wishes to filmi in their streets (yes, ,i say their as in the muslims) then no less then a high ranking police officer will escort you out for offending the poor innocent minority that want to slit your throat and take over your country.

God I hope they do... I live in Australia and hate this fkn country. The arrogence in the government thinking we are the center of the world and call the shots. We are basically sheep in this country already with our nanny overlords.

I cant believe peope actually want to live here.

We are mollified sheep no less. A quick discussion at my work shows a majority of people are absolutely ambivalent of these new laws even if they understand them. This is just like the metadata laws, and hell anyone and their dog can get access to that (Greyhound Racing Victoria, REALLY???)

The media are so quick to show us the Chinese and the Russians are the threats, that evil car drivers are murdering cyclists en masse and that 'bringing home the bacon' is offensive to vegans (and probably the LBGTIQROFLBBQ community too assuming we aren't using the incorrect gender pronoun for the day instead), meanwhile as good little Five Eyes lapdogs we are they're crawling up everyone's rectum as fast and as far as possible.

The only positive is that with how hopeless our police and judicial system are (hey, anyone murdered and raped a woman on bail today? no? it's fine, there will be one tomorrow) this law will be an absolute farce, fail to protect anyone, get a whole bunch more people stalked by their police officer ex and "but teh terrists" will continue to blow up or run over civilians.

Australians have literally no spine.

There's a global right wing extremest push. Australia today, USA tomorrow. Personally I find this attack on encryption very disturbing.

Australia are my adopted home country, and i really would love to go there to live the few years i have left and die a free man, something i feel i cant do here where i am born.
But i also think the reason i would like to go live there is it is far more easy to find a place where it is thinly populated, though i have no doubt i will be able to feel much better with 1000 Aussies around me than i would Danes, then i was still going to settle in a thin populated place.
A country and its inhabitants are pretty much always its own greatest threat, i think its safe to say history have proven that many times.

PS. it have always been much worse in Denmark in this OP regard, if you want to see big brother in action here is a good place to do it.

Well put.

And there we have it, another one of many cool kids defending leftists and claiming its "mah right wing nazis"
The so called conservatives are social democrats, dont take my word for it, check their damn own site.

Second, people whinning about Bush and patriots act and then forgetting what Obama did with it are the best!

Remember kids, that movie about snowden, it aint Bush he is talking about, but mah right wing!

There is no such thing as freedom in Australia, we have no rights and no one will take a stand against anything because they are either too stupid or too lazy. The government dictates everything we do, hell we even get fined no question for doing 2km/h over the speed limit.

Its a relief (albeit very very small relief) to actually hear from some countrymen who have a fucking brain! (oh.. and a spine.. something aussies were well known for of yesteryear. my grandparents and uncles that fought would absolutely roll in their graves at today's disrespect for their sacrifices).
