Unreal Tournament 4/2015

That would be a shame. Unfortunately the online population is dead in my region, they need to release some team orientated modes like onslaught and assault to get people interested again.

I tried it out two years ago and while reminiscent of UT from before it was more like 2k4 vs 99 so not right up my ally but it was fun again. Sad if it has been side lined. They just took too long to push through any meaningful updates and had it out to the public too soon I guess.

Onslaught...my good I probably had 4000+ hours into it. Best gaming years of my life. I dont understand why its so difficult to implement it. It only took me a few months to make ONS-Dawn for UT3.

Downloaded the game the other day. Very impressed so far with the what the game is as of right now. Not so impressed with the online community or lack thereof. Hardly anyone is playing online. Limited on the number of maps available and regular CTF, my favorite gametype, seems to be limited on quality maps.

I'm probably gonna fire up a server of my own in a few days.

Anyone else playing?

I do every now and then. I kinda stopped out of boredom of playing the same maps over and over.

How's the performance on this game? Will my Fury have issues at 1080P?

It ran smooth on my rig though a GTX 570 instead of the 1070...

A little laggy in the beginning of the round but it'd even out after I got killed a couple of times.

Now though, none of those issues at all.

I run it with a single 1080 @ 1080P without any issues. All graphics settings are set to their highest setting.

I downloaded the editor because I have a couple ideas for some maps, but man this thing is a LOT more difficult to learn than the editor from the first UT. I don't even know where to begin. :(

They have team oriented modes like TDM and CTF.

One of the bigger problems with 2k4 was the extent to which all the various mods and game modes fractured the community. It was possible to support that sort of thing back when there were a smaller number of shooters but it's just not with the current amount. If you only have X players trying to split them across TDM, CTF, BR, VCTF, ONS, AS, and then all the various mods really starts to fail once X decreases below a certain threshold. It also made balance issues even worse. You're not really going to pull of balancing a set of weapons across say CTF and ONS. This helped lead to the over dominance of hitscan. And that's leaving out the sheer volume of mutators like IG or after the fact mods like TAM that fractured the community even more.

I started back in Unreal and UT99 and while I loved all the games the series tore itself apart. UT2k3 pissed off a LOT of people with the changes it made and firmly shattered the community in half. It never fully recovered. UT2004 tried to roll back some of that, and was the product 2k3 should have been, but the inclusion of vehicles was obviously a "me too" reaction to various games out at the time and firmly shattered community again into vehicular gamers vs arena type players. Then at the end you had TAM show up and perform the same stunt. Unreal 3 had more than it's share of flaws, but at that point you didn't have an Unreal Community anymore. You had a UT99 community that was still pretty healthy and not going anywhere, and then you had a 2004 1v1/TDM, CTF, IG CTF/TDM, ONS, AS, and TAM community that were too split for it to matter.

I don't think you're going to put this back together at this point.

I agree. I was a UT99 competition clan member of IG CTF. UT2K3 arrived with great fanfare and it bombed. We all went back to UT99 while playing UT2K3 sparingly. That competitive scene died and a lot of my group moved to UT2K4 TAM as IG in 2K4 was always "off". UT has been dead ever since.

It also doesn't help that at the time UT was never picked up by large professional LAN or competitive organizations. It was all CS or Quake. That mentality still remains today which doesn't help UT's cause.

Low Grav, IG CTF @ 155% game speed and 55% air control was my game back in the day. I also played "giant maps" with similar settings. I need to devote a whole day in learning the new Unreal Editor. I want to remake some of those maps.

They might be remade already. There are a ton of UT99 maps that have been remade for the new UT.

One of the reasons Quake got it is that Quake was the better DM game end of fucking story. The other reason is that the UT community was split over tons of things repeatedly while everyone kept playing Quake Duel and Quake TDM/DM. It goes back to the same issue of UT being all over the place where Quake was just deathmatch in it's 1v1/ffa/tdm modes. Hell even UT CTF back in the day that broke it from the 1v1/ffa/tdm community.

There was also EPIC shitting all over the PC gaming community repeatedly post Gears Of War.

It's an incredible franchise that it's own developers, community, and amazing stretch of options kept killing it for the same damn reasons.

At this point their best option is to reboot Unreal ala Doom as an SP game.

Any place I can find a list of maps? Looking through the servers I can't seem to find anything remotely close to what I used to play when I played UT99.

Based on the latest chatter on the UT forums, it seems development has stopped by the main Epic devs who are now focusing on other projects:

https://www.epicgames.com/unrealtou...me-general-discussion/393499-has-work-stopped

There have been no updates for several months - hoping the project is not dead. I really wanted this to succeed but we are almost 4 years into this and still don't have a complete game. I would gladly pay for this game if they manage to get it finished.

Oh no!!!!

So freakin' close....

I'm not sure. I just automatically downloaded them from the server I played on. I haven't played in a while but the servers I played on were instagib CTF and they had just about every original official ctf map and a the most popular community instagib ctf maps from ut99. There's probably a place to download them somewhere.

I found a list. They're all regular gravity maps. Not what I used to play.

KazeoHin you still doing any kind of development for this game?

Unfortunately I don't have any good news. I have a pretty close relationship with the devs, and even did contract work for them. I know every Epic dev has a huge love for UT as a franchise, but from what I understand, the development environment for UT is a difficult one.

Sad to hear, I actually was just yesterday remembering all the fun times I had many years ago playing Unreal Tournament. In the absence of a new version, maybe I need to take a trip down memory lane and fire up the old version.

Download this version. While it's still aphpa, it's still fun to play. The mechanics remind me of a cross between UT2k4 and UT99. Seems to be closer to UT99.

I'm sorry lol, I'm not actually sure which version you are referring to

Ye, and it shows. Should've been more like 2003/4

UT3 died with the GameSpy shutdown

Literally just installed the game. Created a new profile. Browsed the game servers for DM. They had servers for TDM, DM and CTF. I stopped looking after that.

Yeah, it seemed pretty apparent. Sad, but apparent. I actually think it could have had an audience too. It was initially on the right track, and people have been playing this sort of game more again. They really needed to give it a push though, and get enough content out for people to keep busy with it. I think the community involvement was a good idea, but not without a larger base of Epic developed content. Maps, game modes, etc. It felt decent, but very unfinished without a proper initial sized chunk of things to play. Quake Champions is by no means huge in any way, but it's got a good base, and they keep adding to it on a regular basis. People are playing it. UT could have done similarly IMO. I know I would have played it a lot more.

I wonder what they'll do when Fortnite isn't the new big thing for the kids these days. Because, that's what it feels like. My kids like it. People play it on everything from mobile to PCs, and I believe that's because it caught on like a mobile fad sort of thing. They do seem to be properly caring for it, and bolstering content, so that'll keep it going a while. Still, (and maybe I'm wrong) but I don't know how long they can sustain that. I guess we'll see. I wasn't impressed. My son made me try it out with him, and while it wasn't horrible or anything, it definitely didn't appeal to me at all. But then, I'm a Quake and Doom diehard from way back when. :D Fortnite has no grit or evil, or anything compelling for someone that's more into the darker themes.

It's an odd-duck.... That's for sure.

It looks and plays like a mobile game; but was built for PC/consoles.

Yeah. I think it also has something to do with the social (outside the game) aspect too. It's like a social network with a shooter attached. I hadn't seen my son play with that many of his friends or as regularly before it. Kinda felt like the way kids go to the next cool social app, but with a game. It's tapered off some now, but none of his other games were like that. He'd play a shooter or a sports game with a couple of buddies once in a while, but they were all glued to this for the longest time. Kind of how I was with Dooms and Quakes, but back then we'd all be in the same room on a LAN.

can you still grab the free 'test / beta' they were working on? I thought it was looking and playing really nicely, but have not been keeping tabs...

They said that it will remain available for people to download indefinitely, but to expect no more support or updates.

Cool then, it's probably going to continue to have support- the best maps and mods have always been from the public.

It had a lot of potential but petered out overall and it never felt right. I know they were going for UT99 feel early on but it never felt like UT99. Everything that came after that felt more like Quake, which was great for Quake.
Sad to see it spin down but they never really gave it a fraction of their all.

I see Fortnite as more of a fad and the "thing" to play for now but I dunno how much staying power it will have if they put most of their eggs in that basket.

I doubt Epic cares. They are making more money now then they have in the past 20 years.

You'd think they hire more developers....
