A Tesla owner was pulled over and arrested this Friday after California Highway Patrol spotted him asleep behind the wheel going 70 mph in Autopilot mode. Officers had to trick the Tesla’s Autopilot system to get the vehicle to stop by maneuvering a patrol car in front of it, as the driver was allegedly drunk and nonresponsive.

When officers pulled up next to the car, they allegedly saw Samek asleep, but the car was moving straight, leading them to believe it was in autopilot mode. The officers slowed the car down after running a traffic break, with an officer behind Samek turning on emergency lights before driving across all lanes of the highway, in an S-shaped path, to slow traffic down behind the Tesla, Montiel said.

First it was you aren't supposed to have sex with the autopilot on. Now you can't even get a ride home after drinking. What exactly is the point of automated vehicles again?

They're nowhere near good enough to truly unassisted driving. The point of stuff like Autopilot right now is to allow the driver to not need to touch the wheel, manage speed, etc, but they still need to pay attention as the AI simply isn't capable of handling every situation. It will be a long time before fully automated vehicles are ready for consumers.

what happens if you are playing with yourself in the car during auto pilot ?

reignited questions about the uses, and potential abuses, of self-driving technology.
I dunno, sounds to me like it may have prevented bad things from happening. Really think this guy's motive for driving was he had autopilot? Or would he have driven drunk in any car?

So...the driver is expected to become an attentive backseat driver? Seems like a demotion to me.

To anyone thinking this was good, where does the car exit or stop? Look how hard it was for police to stop it, it wasn't even smart enough to know it was being pulled over. Drunk drivers kill, so do drunk controlled AI. It's wrong both ways.

that cop was endangering the lives of others by doing his maneuvers. Car was going straight...home probably.

i knew a man once who was delivering coal by horse carriage, he got plastered almost everyday and would fall asleep on the carriage while the horse took him home, even went through a rail X. Horse also had a mug of beer in him

shit you not

Police should know just staying in front of the Tesla and slowing down would stop the car. If that didn’t work they should had shot out a tire :)

No. Autopilot is poorly named and is more akin to driver assist than true autopilot. It is more like a far more advanced, AI controlled, version of cruise control than anything like a real autopilot.
Gee, thanks for the clarification.
And all along I thought I was making an obvious joke.

I agree, it's a crappy name.

I believe you completely and this isn't a dig...I'm just curious. Are you 100 years old and/or live out in the boonies?
I'd honestly love to see a horse carriage being used in modern-day commerce. I'm sure the novelty would wear off in about a minute but it would still make me smile.

The future is boring!

"Sit still and monitor someone else do your job for you."

"Will I get paid to supervise?"

"No."

"Okay..."

It took 7 minutes of getting in front of it in an S pattern, did you even read the article. This was near where I live and I don't tolerate assholes on the road. When I get my Tesla I won't try to harm others using it.

apparently you can't read either

the cop was doing the S shit to slow down the traffic.

this happened in Poland during early 80's, good time, for some.

40 and kickin'

This was inappropriate and criminal. And kinda cool.

As long as the car isn't arrested for doing its best. 'A' for effort.

I can't believe anyone thinks this is okay...
First you you have an A.I. that can't exit or handle in town traffic.
2nd, what happens when the battery starts to get low and the A.I. Stops controlling the car.
3rd.

Drunk or not, you sure as he'll shouldn't be asleep behind the wheel muchless not paying attention.

Just like the guy watching a DVD on his tesla when the car went under a semi trailer and the guy lost his head...literally.

I mean if he wasn't in the (semi-)autonomous vehicle, there'd likely be at least one person in the hospital, so I guess win for Tesla?

Elon Musk says 10 years for fully automated systems that are safer than humans to hit the consumer market. Just saw that quote last week.

He also says there is a 70% chance he will move to mars...lol...Its a win for Tesla no matter how bad it is.

Okay !
I thought that cars with a skill-set like that was also aware of the sounds and lights of emergency vehicles and so react to those as the traffic code tell them / us to do.
So they omitted coding for such events it seem to me, thats pretty damn incompetent if you ask me, and it should be one of the foremost things that was tested to allow for such cars to be unleashed in public.

well its not a fully autonomous vehicle and obviously isn't licensed to be used by a driver that's impaired in any way.

And here I thought I'd buy a Tesla so my 10 year old could drive herself and her friends to the mall. Geuss I can't do that either?

I would never use Tesla car smarts, and if i was in one and the driver used it i would ask to be let out of the car.
Dont get me wrong i do think the faster cars can drive them self and so remove the stupid humans from that equation the better, but thats not going to happen 100 % in my lifetime / when i an fit enough to drive.
Many people are stupid dangerous animals in traffic, and not just the ones in a car or on a motorcycle or moped / bicycle or other means of transport, many people cant even handle the few simple rules for walking in public.

It is going to be a method of control and tracking. To be able to hinder, stop, and manipulate anyone's ability to be mobile; and to monitor and know where you are (q.v. http://www.myorego.org/). I Robot was, as with many movies/books, prophetic.

For those of you who cannot see where this is going:

This type of issue is how the law enforcement agencies are going to be able to get a back door access to your car so they can control it, just for emergencies like this. Just watch it happen, all you pro-autonomous people.

The fun is just now beginning.

Yeah I read the article and it smells like bullshit to me. 7 minutes from when they spotted him to stopping him and the autopilot didnt start slowing the car down on its own? 7 minutes is way past the time for hands to be off the wheel.

This is one of those times that this will be the norm in the future and won’t even be an issue. But the police and states will fight for quite some time due to loss in revenue
