Diablo IV Will Be Heavily Influenced by Diablo II

Pretty much. I want a Diablo 4 because I enjoy the story and characters but if their just going to churn out another pile of shit. Then no.

Unfortunately, the people who enjoyed the first two games are NOT their target audience any longer. Hell, they had an interview with one of the developers and he flat out said, Diablo Immortal is for the Chinese audience, that's where the money is.

Money over substance and quality, that's the age we live in now.

Yeah, completely agree. I wish it was different case, but they haven't really had a critical success in such a long while, and other seems they moved from that to just focusing on financial ones.

That guy a a had a legitimate reason for asking " Is this an out of season April Fools joke" years before they did one that was called "Little Reaper" for April fools as a joke that was a Diablo mobile game...so in essence they were the ones who portrayed a product like that as a joke, and expected everyone to take the Immortal announcement seriously.

I enjoy the seasons play. Forces a refresh, some new challenges and what not.

Try path of Exile their version of seasons are leagues where they continually add content to the game and then either make it a permanent part of the game or toss it out depending on reception. Almost everything with Diablo 3 for Ros and afterwards they stole from PoE, rifts they took from maps season events and such they just stole trying to gain back fan base.

I've played Path of Exile off and on since it came out. Problem with the game, it doesn't have a storyline or a character worth caring about. If you're just into playing it for loot and stat building, its a great game. It falls flat on its face when it comes to down to a story you can sink your teeth into. My opinion though.

I sorta agree. My issue with Path of Exile is that you are, in most cases, min/maxing one skill in an almost unneeded complex way to run a single mission type (maps) over and over again. It is like they have this whole tree and a vast majority of the players very quickly land up just find a guide and picking "build X" which has a pre-defined path. If the complexity will be reduced because it is too complex.....then why have it if only few can access it completely? This game really doesn't reward off-builds or stuff like that. Made me go..umm...yeah...

I had plenty of fun playing Diablo 3. Both while the auction house was live nd now.
Tried of Path of Exile. It's just not fun.

I agree, even though Diablo 3's storyline was laughable & the design elements were pretty shallow, It was a fun game to play, I'll give it that. Path of Exile, was fun at first, but quickly became boring for me.

Diablo 4 needs to have a mature gothic atmosphere with the story elements of Diablo 1 & 2 but keep the tight game play of Diablo 3.

Make it like Path of Exile in the Diablo universe and I’ll pre-order right noW.

PoE is the Diablo 3 that should have been.

So, I got the game at launch and played a lot. When the auction house launched, it quit being a game that was about the grind - it stopped being Diablo and started being Auctionhouse Millionaire.

No thanks.

Na man, Diablo 2 had an auction house too. Ebay. People made thousands.

The other and imo biggest problem with POE is that it over complicates shit for no real benefit. Don't get me wrong, I play and enjoy POE but there is something to be said for the simplicity of D3 in its current form. I can play a season, hit my goals and walk away for a month or two until the next season hits and pick it right back up with minimal fuss. When I walk away from PoE for a month or two, they change every damned thing about the game and it becomes a chore for the first few days.

Diablo 3 was fun, until I beat it. Then I never touched it again, seemed like a waste. Id really just like to see more of a God of War slash Assassins Creed mashup. With similar simple battle mechanics as god of war, but with movement/physics and story like assassins creed. That would be the perfect game. I think there is so much potential in the Diablo franchise, story and character wise, that is just wasted on a grindy casual hack and slash.

While true, the game wasn't designed with this in mind, which is the why the RMAH was a horrible idea. Drops sucked, and you had to use the RMAH to get decent loot. That's not Diablo. I wanted to play the game, not eBay.

diablo 3 launch and original 'vision' was horrible. I do enjoy playing it now though but probably something lilke a few hours every couple weeks. Mostly because at this point I just have been worn out from it. There is only so much I can play a game. I do think I have probably put more hours into 3 than I did diablo 2. Tried to go back to D2 but just couldn't enjoy it anymore, not sure why. Maybe it just didn't age well for me?

According to an article regarding “the past, present, and future of Diablo,” Blizzard is currently hard at work on the fourth title, which has already gone through one major revision. While Diablo IV was initially conceptualized as an over-the-shoulder action game reminiscent of Dark Souls, the team behind “Fenris” is now aiming for something truly worthy of the Diablo name by reverting to one of the franchise’s most popular entries for inspiration.

“There’s a lot of people who felt like Diablo III got away from what made Diablo Diablo in terms of art style and spell effects,” said a current Blizzard employee, adding that Fenris is aiming to look more like the beloved Diablo II. Said another: “They want to make this gross, make it dark, [get rid of] anything that was considered cartoony in Diablo III… Make what people were afraid of in Diablo II, but modern.”

Well 3-D isometric games have really improved over the past few years I wasn't impressed with Diablo 3 as a whole at launch it looked better later on but I stayed away from it.

Account bound items need to go and hardcore dueling needs to result in permadeath and be allowed anywhere. This was the simple recipe of d2.

The main addiction was grinding toward an almost impossible to reach level and praying for that godly unique to drop so you can TRADE!

I played solely hardcore on d2 and admittedly enjoyed making bonesnap pallys to chase after low levels. Likewise it was a rush trying to get away from pkers when I was on the receiving end.

If they really wanted it to be like d2, these would be obvious. I lost 2 years of my high school life to that game. D3 not so much.

They mention style and spell effects. What they are missing is that a lot people liked the customizable stats and skills. Sure many people dumped their stat points in vitality but not everyone made cookie cutter builds. In Diablo 3, you have everything given to you; there was not much uniqueness except for gear.

Personally, My Opinion, but Diablo 3 was absolutely terrible story wise, from my point of view I could easily see what was happening and predict the outcome rather easily, it was the equivalent of a child's novel when it came to the writing level. They actively spent a quarter of the game trying in a half-assed way to make me care about a little girl, opening an Inn and such, Worlds ending and we all have time for happy thoughts and comedy routines..........................................… Almost all Blizzards games have no real depth including WoW, and that has the largest problem because they fail to make a compelling bad guy truly Evil, everyone just is morally gray/best of intentions or corrupted, Legion I absolutely cringed at how they turned "You are not prepared" into a complete joke using that tag line with Illadin 100x making it lose the iconic meaning and feeling it once had.

You need to play PoE again since they extended the acts and actually fleshed out the story now, going to Oriath, you finally see what was going on, and the connections to the previous Empires that inhabited Wraeclast and the history with Oriath. Honestly PoE IMO has a much darker, sinister tale to tell, you simply don't get the whole scope though unless you invest time into the game, talk to the NPCs/read the story nodes/Read the flavor text on the gear, everything has a backstory GGG just doesn't slap you in the face with it, you only touch on the basics by playing, but part of the game is filling in the dots with the history of the game.

Indeed. I always though if they were going to kill off Deckard, they shouldn't have done it with a butterfly. They SHOULD have made him Belial. That way it would have made sense to have him basically use the player throughout the series in an attempt to defeat Diablo & take over Hell.

Oh hell no, we don't need that skill tree, gems, runes, etc. convoluted mess. DII did it the best of all of them.

If you want an excellent single player experience - Grim Dawn is waiting for you. Attentive players especially will be rewarded with story and lore you might otherwise miss out on.

Most of the Iron Lore devs (Titan Quest) are in Crate Entertainment, and content is continuously added - small content updates for free via patches, massive updates via expansions - and I'm comfortable using that term - it's far more than your run of the mill DLC. Much like with Iron Lore they have official forums where they constantly engage with the community and provide updates.

Thematically it's dark and gritty - not to the extent of POE but perfectly in line with D1/D2. The game system takes the original dual class synergy Titan Quest had and improved upon it in a few ways. The constellation system exists to smooth out builds to make many of them viable in the harder modes, while many gear sets can completely change the way a class combination plays.

There's a lot of secret areas too - some no more than a room, some an entire maps worth.

I've easily logged 400+ hours into it since it was in beta, and as someone whom only ays hardcore I don't really mind if a character dies in the harder modes - it's enjoyable to start again and try out new class combos, likely stumbling upon content previously missed along the way.

Part of what made the franchise legendary was the marriage of a turn based RPG and an action game, the problem with Diablo 3 was the absence of a compelling deep RPG system, Loot is the goal, not what defines your character. Blizzard tried to treat loot as if was the RPG that defined your character and it failed miserably to the point the game felt like it had no soul, while absolutely fun especially on console, PC wise it was just a button mashing brawler that felt far from the heart and essence of what made Diablo great.

Diablo 3 was a financial success not a critical success, that they needed, preorders sold based on the expectation it was a game like Diablo 2 which it was far from..... Combine that with error 47 and a RMAH and difficulty scaling that only led people playing 2 classes and very specific builds and it became a compounded senario where they pissed off the core fan base and the newcomers to a certain extent, enter GGG and POE, that clearly stole the ARPG crown.

After I heard rumors of Diablo 4 initially becoming a ripoff of Dark Souls, I honestly lost faith in them with the Diablo franchise, it was bad enough it was the most neglected fanbase and franchise they had. They seem to be content with making a game far from the principles that the original 2 games became famous for........

Honestly at this point I don't even want a Diablo 4 as I'd rather remember the foundness of the original 2 without the series being bastardized any more than they already have been. To me its like Dragon Age after origins and the expansion the series doesn't exist.

Diablo 1 was more of a marriage of Nethack meets Gauntlet. The only problem was it was just too short. But it definitely had more atmosphere than Diablo 2. And the single player game had an actual save system. The theme was great but you could tell the storyline was something tacked onto the multiplayer component. A very well done game for its time.

Diablo 2 is what set the bar for action RPG's. As an ARPG it was outstanding. It also had a more involved plotline. But the atmosphere felt less dark and less gripping. You didn't really feel the diablo 1 type feeling until you met the Archangel.

Yep, I've been playing GD for about two weeks now. Having fun.

POE is fun, but it has gotten quite convoluted with its tree, crafting, and the trading system is garbage.

i always thought the darkness of the story was engaging the fact Humanity was caught between a war between heaven and hell, with no real help only humanity that would stand up to fight and not give up despite the tragedy that a win was merely another trade off or set back was the Pinnacle of pre 1700's like a Shakespearean play.

Good point. I believed that too. Just couldn't put it in words.
But it definitely felt like you were up against terrible evil, more so than Diablo II did (besides the excellent introduction).

Thank you for this. Exactly sums up my feeling on both games. I loved D2, but it D1 was really creepy. I almost fell out of my chair the first time I came across the Butcher in D1.

Edit: I should add D3 is just like Torchlight to me. Just doesn't feel creepy at all

That's pretty much the reason though why I didn't care for Diablo 3, It had none of that feeling, You were Nephalim basically overpowered to begin with rather than despite all your strength still at a disadvantage, the only real tragedy was the fact for a quarter to half the game they tried to make me care about that little girl in an arbitrary way to her becoming a host for Diablo, None of the Evils were really Evil enough, I think the only real boss they got right was the oversexualized half Spider that was Ozmodius first in command, she was portrayed in a way that would send chills down your spine with that sultry voice, playing with you, as you descended downwards(It just had that feeling you were being toyed with), I mean her mechanics were understated and she would easily fold up fast.

OMG. that butcher, I remember running into all the mini events that would net you the uniques Arkaine's Valor for instance and the small mini stories that came with them, it felt like you were exploring a creepy dungeon descending into the pits of hell. I remember the first time I ran into one of those Hell Knights...………

OK setting up a VM...Back to D1, then D2...thanks guys/gals......

Try an Oldschool Diablo clone called Throne of Darkness you may like it.

Look man. Diable players from the day need to sit the blizzard team down and be like, "Stay a while and listen. Well tell you what the hell you need to do."

We tried that, Rainbow Bright hidden level was what happened making fun of the people who tried to help, and they didn't listen to anybody. They made the game they wanted that nobody asked for.

I will enjoy 4 if it's like 3. I'm not too picky.

Feature Eirena as a more powerful and major character for the story. Kormac can be a Crusader.

If they need enemies the Crusaders and corrupted Paladins kill each other in The End of Her Journey from 2014.

Was that that Samurai game where you had 3 party members? That game wasnt that great. Not terrible but it was not diablo and it was even very anime stylized IIRC.

Darkstone was better. Probably the best Diablolike clone until Titan Quest came out.

I wouldn't consider it Anime styled, the intro maybe, but it was basically Japanese Diablo you just had 4 characters 3 AI and you could switch between them, the itemization was really good, and it had it so you were building 7 characters at the same time so strategy was on top of Character building. It may have been a failed concept in practice but it was fun, I don't think by any means it was a GotY type of game. This is a review, but most people liked it because it was very difficult compared to Diablo.

Yes I remember.
I beat this game long ago. But I didn't really enjoy it that much, but it wans't a bad game. It just felt clunky.

I enjoyed Darkstone, for all its faults, a lot more (even though it became "hi, get 1 shotted as a mage if you get hit" on the higher difficulty levels. It was alot closer to the original Diablo in pilaystyle, but it took some hate for being completely 3D rendered, but some people liked being able to rotate the maze and view).

I agree, the clunkiness came from the animations not being fully done correctly, but the sprites for the time were amazing. It did have some UI flaws and the switching wasn't perfect, Darkstone I remember actually just seen the PC Jewel case for it in my collection, I feel like all the Diablo clones did have an imperfection or 2 here and there but for the most part some of them captured some of the feeling or diversified some of the systems greatly. Hellgate London was enjoyable at the time despite it's shortcomings.

I'd be happy if I simply didn't have to connect to BNet services to play single player or host a game with friends. Pepperidge Farms knows what I'm talking about.
