WTF 2080 cards are $800+ ?

If you factor in all the documented failures and refunds Nvidia is authorizing by the troves, something doesn’t compute with this launch.

But I am glad you feel like you’re not taking a risk by keeping the card, and you are enjoying it. If they made thousands of these cards I’m guessing a few should work as advertised.

Personally I won’t buy a product until it’s features are proven and popular.

VR? 3D tv’s? Physx? Hairworks? I dodged those bullets.

I’d be very interested if Nvidia fixed whatever major issue is going on, they removed the rtx “feature”, sold it purely as a rasterized card at half the price.

If they did that, there would be no need for the 2080/2070 to exist.

Remember the poor volta joke?
We never saw volta in consumer space... outside of 'titanic price V'.
Now they stick a big die in the RTX and what happens?

Poor indeed.

it's a result of Nvidia having no competition in the high end market. Until AMD can put some pressure on them Nvidia will continue to charge what they want.

I got my 1080 just about a year ago for $660 (cdn) and I'm going to stick with it for a while.

No one buys AMD and people keep buying Nvidia. You funded your own problem when you keep buying Nvidia products. Look at the GPP was that something because of the competition with AMD don't think so .....

All of the no competition arguments make no sense in this case and it is time that you all learn when you created your own monster you are to blame not AMD!!!!!!

I'm on my fourth one that just shipped from B&H. First three were from a mix of Nvidia store and Best Buy.

This is approaching mass-recall level failure.

Except others are good to go with just one. Anecdotal experiences are just that.

Seriously considering selling my 1080 ti while prices are inflated and buying a 2080/2080ti when prices fall back to reasonable levels. I think my back up 1070 could do the trick...

We funded Nvidia because AMD didn't have anything worth while to fund.

In the last 2 1/2 years if I wanted 1080 TI level performance, what was the AMD alternative?
What is the AMD answer to the 2080 and 2080 TI?

Buy 100 then we'll talk.

It took me 3x GTX 780s back in the day before I got a good one. Anyone remember the great GTX 780 recall of 2013? I don't. Probably because there wasn't one. Anecdotes need to be taken with a grain of salt, no matter who's telling them.

My 2080 Ti FE is doing just fine, btw.

And now you are paying for it. Don't complain there is no reason to you knew what you were doing ....

I'm not complaining. I still have my gtx 1080 which I'm more than happy with.
What exactly is the point that you're trying to make? AMD is pretty much nowhere to be found so people are (and have been) buying the best cards available (Nvidia). When a company has no direct competition that tends to put them in a place where they can price their items higher.

Also.. Intel didn't did up their core count on their I5/I7 series until AMD put some heat on them with Ryzen. Same logic goes to innovation too.

Logic goes out of the window when companies like Nvidia and Intel both have been in trouble (or is : GPP) for practises that were deemed not so legal.
Intel crippled software in compilers/libraries to prevent the competition from benefiting from SSE.
Nvidia uses proprietary technologies.
So much for the best the best would not need such heavy handed form of protection if you are the best.
By the best you mean you can buy at this moment then that again is pretty short sighted.

Nvidia just raises the price they have been doing that ever since they started they started selling the mid range silicon as high end for the desktop market since a good number of years now.

That is the company you expect fair prices from when they have competition....

I never suggested that anything Intel or Nvidia did was ethical. But if the masses starting buying AMD instead of Nvidia that would put Nvidia in a place where they would need to respond or lose out.

I too would rather buy the latest ATI Radeon card, that gives great 4K performance on par with a 1080 Ti or RTX 2080, at a more affordable price.

But we can't, because no such card exists. So we're stuck with going nVidia route if you like to play moden games on a 4k monitor.

Yes, but at this point a 1080ti would make more sense until they can figure out the RTX cards.

Are you referring to prices used? The prices new from retailers aren't supporting your statement. Amazon, Newegg and bh show little difference new 1080ti vs 2080.

Yeah but the pricing of a 1080 Ti today is OUTRAGEOUS. That card is almost 2 years old, and they sell for $800.

That card should be like $499 today.

And the RTX 2080 be like $699.

So for me someone with a 40 inch 4k monitor what options do I have for video cards to game at that resolution? Only Nvidia unfortunately not AMD

True, but not sure if you have seen what is going on with the RTX line. $500 or so used or 800 new, at least you know the line works very well.

You can buy a used RTX 2080 for $500 on Craigslist or something ?

So if you like to buy new cards you should pay $800 for a 1080ti vs $769 (I know there are 2080s for $750 but friends dont let friends buy blower cards) 2080 that will perform 5-10% better. Evga is selling out of their $699 RTX 2080 cards within minutes because people don't want to pay $800 for a 1080ti. I don't like the prices but unless used is your market new ti's are a hard sell.

For something that works? That would be up to you. ;)

I'm sure alot of those evga b stocked 1080ti's aren't from people using the stepup program. This issue is prevalent because the ridiculous prices of the cards. They are definitely pretending it's not one so that the stocks don't continue to plummet. Now how much over the normal failure rate we don't know. If they were smart actually releasing the numbers of this and the previous 2 series would give perspective. If it being blown out of proportion the numbers will show

I have a 4K TV as well, with Vega 64 Crossfire. In CF supported games it gets around 1080 Ti level give or take depending on the game.

At current pricing, you can get 2x Vega 64 for $800. Maybe not a huge win in price, but if you factor in lower cost on FreeSync monitors, and that you can buy FreeSync TVs today, it is a viable proposition.

Man... I remember when I bought an 8600GT for like $70 thinking how expensive it is...

It is to late for that. AMD needed money for GPU development but instead choose to go with the afore mentioned Zen. If people did buy the best everyone would have had a R9 290X.

Now you know that when people start talking about competition they have no idea what they are talking about especially if you watched the whole AdoredTV video about how Nvidia screws everyone.

If you want 4K and you justify buying Nvidia it suddenly won't make Nvidia stop screwing you because money is what fuels them. No fuel no fire. short term sucks for you, long term better prices ...

This is the reason I upgraded from my GTX 970 to a GTX 1070 Ti on black friday, at least it was a decent amount below MSRP... I know you high-res bitches probably need something faster but yea I'm a 240Hz 1080p monitor user (although prefer to use 144Hz + strobing) so it should last me a decent while.

They will fix it. They sure fucked this up though. What's sad is they didn't have to drop this card when they did. They could have waited for RTX software support to be more readily available. They rushed it and it bit that ass.

P.S. Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it.

bit that ass indeed. I think a lot of consumers are still holding onto their 1070 and 1080 series cards as they are seeing reports that upgrades are not exactly in the upper 10's of percents of performance increase. shoulda waited for more support and drop before easter

In my next life i wanna be a low-res bitch..seems much cheaper..

I ran 7680x1440 resolution at 144Hz for a while. It was amazing, but a constant struggle to get good performance.

Just "upgraded" to a 2560x1080 ultrawide, and it was a huge breath of fresh air. Took a big hit on the visual fidelity, but it's so nice to get 166 fps on Ultra settings without breaking a sweat.

These prices are ridiculous. No plans on upgrading my Titan X Pascal anytime soon.

Yeah, the RTX pricing schema is laughably ridiculous, to me.

Looked at 1080Ti prices recently? No one wants RMA20 series, but those who do are getting 100% pure gouging. Same with those thinking they'll 'save a few bucks' on a 1080Ti.

V64 at $400 with 3x games is great value in comparison lol.

Shit, that's V64 Crossfire for the same price as a single 2080...and scaling can be decent, depending on the game.

Reddit user review of V64 crossfire.

Yeah, I've been having good luck with CF V64 on 4K. Some games don't work, but the majority of them do (maybe needing some setup or tweaks).

I think it's a viable option for people that want to support AMD for whatever reason (e.g. FreeSync) but need more performance. Also, if people really want to stick it to Nvidia, then buy AMD.

Why doesn't AMD make a similar performing card to the GTX 1080 Ti / RTX 2080 ?

I'm not expecting AMD to make a 2080 Ti killer, but at least something competitive in the $500 or so range for 4k gaming.

I am looking to upgrade from my GTX 1070, to maybe a RTX 2080 ( not the bonfire Ti card )

But what the heck, the regular 2080's are frigging $800 ? Jesus. I thought they'd be like $599 max.

I've been buying video cards since the Voodoo card days 20 years ago, and forver it seems top end cards were in the $600 or so price range. And the 2070 type cards would be in the $500 or so range.

Why the F is the 2080 a outrageous $800 ?
/QUOTE]

I'm selling an rtx 2080 for $629 if interested. Check out my sales thread in the hard forum FS/FT section

Got this from another site, this might shed some insight on pricing

https://www.techpowerup.com/246925/...-to-71-higher-than-previous-gen?cp=6#comments

Max dies per wafer (without defect): 58
Good dies: 39
Defective dies: 19
Partial dies: 8
Yield: ~68%
^ This is the absolute best case scenario. Ever.
More realistically we are looking at a defect rate of 0.15 which would give drastically worse numbers:
Max dies per wafer (without defect): 58
Good dies: 20
Defective dies: 38
Partial dies: 8
Yield: ~34%
Calculator: http://caly-technologies.com/en/die-yield-calculator/
Assuming each wafer costs about 25000$ (it can't be much lower because Quadro RTX 8000 goes for 10000$ by itself so wafer is at least 2x more costly).
25000/20=1250$ well surprise surprise. If we get 20 good dies on 25000$ wafer the price is exactly what it is now for 2080Ti. But while the chip itself may the biggest cost per card there are other components costs that make up the BoM (Bill of Materials).

So per that Techp website, yeah the GTX 1070 was "affordable" in the $399 range, I do recall picking one up for less than $400, but now today a brand new RTX 2070 isn't even close to that $399 price, they are more like $550 to $600 which is outrageous for a 70 series.

And the GTX 1080 at launch was like $600 or so, but the new version RTX 2080 can't be found for less than around $800, which again is crazy high, it should be near that $600 price.

Call me when prices come to reality, and what they should be;

RTX 2070 = $399 - $449
RTX 2080 = $599 - $649
RTX 2080 Ti = $749 - $800

The 2080TI is the only one that uses a super large die the rest are not that different from their counterparts.

Vega 64 could have been that card if all of it features could of been enabled. It could well of had an extra 30% performance on top of what it has now.
