In what appears to be the first post of AMD's official Reddit account, AMD has pledged to improve graphics driver support for their Ryzen-based mobile PCs. The company mentions that "graphics drivers are typically tailored for specific OEM platforms," and unfortunately, most notebook OEMs don't have the best track record when it comes to maintaining customized drivers, which is exactly what prompted this response. AMD says they will work with OEMs "to increase the release frequency of AMD Ryzen Mobile processor graphics drivers," and that they will look into other ways they can help customers. Thanks to Hexus for spotting the post

Starting in 2019, we will target enabling OEMs to deliver a twice-annual update of graphics drivers specifically for all AMD Ryzen Mobile processor-based systems. Because the release is ultimately up to the OEMs, this may vary from platform to platform, but we want to put out a clear goal for us and our OEM partners. Those updates should be available for download on the respective OEM websites. In addition, AMD will continue to evaluate ways in which we can offer validated graphics drivers for AMD Ryzen Mobile processor-based notebooks aligned to the latest AMD software updates, and will provide updates as soon as we are able. Thank you to the community of AMD users who voice their opinions on this issue.

Yeah right? I'm the guy who bitched about no drivers for x360 r 5 2500u. A lot of you guys slammed me for it. Look like I might of had a point... I still won't believe it until I see new working like they should drivers. Gee only going on the second year. Nvidia can't get their hardware working and AMD promises mobile apu drivers. Does Santa really exist?...........

You did and it's been the biggest criticism of AMD for quite some time now, they got the dGPU drivers on point if not often better than Nvidia in last year or two in many ways, but the notebook stuff has been a thorn in their side as the OEMs won't release upgrades. IIRC at least one does though (HP?) and they have no issues, but most of the rest don't get drivers beyond one every quarter or so or one fullstop... It's the main thing keeping me from considering an AMD laptop at this point. I am in the market, either pull trigger on a cheap zen+ or wait for the 7nm APUs... I think that'll be a smarter move as I have used my current laptop for over a decade lol.

The sad part is that this is kinda a regression on AMD's end. AFAIK my HP Llano laptop uses generic AMD graphics drivers, so at some point they decided that letting OEMs customize them would be a good idea...

OEM and driver support are words that should never be used in the same sentence, especially for AMD. I don't know what's stopping AMD from just releasing a mobile driver on their site that can be downloaded just like a desktop GPU driver. What's so special about mobile between OEMs that would make one driver for a mobile Ryzen not work on another OEM mobile system? Anyone know?

They should start with fixing the APU freezes on Linux. It fucking sucks having to deal with Windows. Absolutely did not expect such a thing

How many times now has AMD pledged better driver support for laptops? They are absolutely ridiculous when it comes to driver support with graphics for end users not on desktops.

People gave you a hard time because you've been polluting every AMD driver thread with bitching about something that doesn't seem to be a driver issue(nobody else with same exact hardware is reporting an issue) and you've ignored anyone that's tried to point you towards a better driver just in case it is a driver issue.

That said it would be nice for AMD to release mobile drivers directly since the laptop manufacturers don't seem to do a very good job of keeping them up to date.

I dont think anybody slammed you for it, we were only pointing out whats is clearly stated in this topic.

You guys berated me told me it wasn't AMD's responsibility etc etc etc. One post even suggested someone buy my machine to shut me up. Most just wanted me to go away.... I call that slamming.....

Which AMD APU and which Linux distribution do you use? I am currently writing this message from Fedora 29 Workstation (Linux based for unfamiliar users) on HP Envy x360 Convertible 15 Ryzen 2500U with no noticeable freeze.
The AMD open source graphic team actively improve the RadeonSI open source which runs fantastic despite some quirks. What they need are more testers reporting bugs.

As long as the existing driver works and supports everything you need it too, having a newer driver is not needed. (Please note the whole sentence, not just the tidbit at the end.) That said, I barely use Mobile and the only device I have a touch screen on is my phone. Mobile Ryzen laptops are fast, I have tried them out but, I prefer sitting in front on a desktop instead. (3 desktops at home.)

Hardware Unboxed is reporting that there will definitely be a mobile driver directly downloadable and that AMD just screwed up and left the first announcement too vague on that aspect.

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad 720s-13ARR with a 2500u. We're talking about COMPLETE system freezes here, not some minor dips in performance. Search for it, it's real and no solution is working for all.

According to what I've read, desktop and mobile APUs have the same problem. Maybe I should try fedora.

That's the thing, it's not just drivers being customized, the hardware can differ significantly due to oems implementations and such... Power envelope, freesync or not, even within very same laptop models the panel might change manufacturer... I understand laptop hardware is much more tinkered and changed now than in the past.
The problem here is more akin to cellphones than desktops. That is why AMD depends more on OEMs than they would on desktop parts.
Perhaps a desktop replacement laptop type would be more apt at using drives straight from AMD, i dont know, the question would be if they have mobile reference designs, and if there are system integrators that would just shove those together and sell you a nice beefy laptop... But i know if you are buying a thinnish HP made product odds are they tinkered with whatever chips AMD provides them, probably do some of their own layouts and power rails or whatever.

Let me guess. Common issues are due to single channel 8 GB DDR4 2133 MHz right? I looked at the NotebookCheck review website mentioning it.
Should the memory not be soldered, at least a dual channel 2400 MHz is the minimum to get a proper performance for the Raven Ridge.

I just watched this
same old crap AMD shooting off its mouth nothing real her just more BS.

no not really. telling you to get something through your head is not berating or slamming. but whatever, maybe youll get some new drivers that work soon.

How is a complete system freeze a performance issue to you people. Am I being trolled? What the fuck

As someone new in this forum, what I found annoying is the automatic assumption of trolling and your language does not help your cause.
Having a laptop with same APU, I tried to help you to possibly find what cause your system freeze.

I'm sorry you all find me so obnoxious.. I have four words for all of all you. HAVE A NICE HOLIDAY. In the future I'll try not to post here anymore....

Sorry for being a jerk but I suggest you read our messages again. I just did and stand by to what I said, even though yes, I am a jerk. Sorry.
