Once again, Microsoft has paused the rollout of the Windows 10 "October" Update to some users. According to the 1809 support page, Intel "inadvertently released versions of its display driver (versions 24.20.100.6344, 24.20.100.6345) to OEMs that accidentally turned on unsupported features in Windows." A quick search shows that these drivers aren't listed on Intel's driver website, but the info on 3rd party hosts suggests that they popped up around October, and some OEMs like Lenovo seem to have pushed 6344 out earlier in November. Microsoft has a support thread for users affected by the bug on their forum.

After updating to Windows 10, version 1809, audio playback from a monitor or television connected to a PC via HDMI, USB-C, or a DisplayPort may not function correctly on devices with these drivers... Next Steps: Microsoft is working with Intel to expire these display drivers, including coordinating with OEMs, and will provide an update on the resolution in an upcoming release.

I agree it's the OEM's and Intel on this one but it's still amazing to how much fallout continues to rain down from October.

That is a rather dumb comment. Obviously, even a cursory look at the quoted text shows that Microsoft has done right but, it is not their fault someone else released drivers they should not have done.
Yeah, but it is a humorous meme despite being off-base. Good job Microsoft...this time.

No. If Microsoft wants to take control of drivers away from users then they need to be held responsible when they push updates with broken drivers. Maybe they shouldn't have fired the QA team.

Yet, they did not take control of the drivers away from anyone. Sheez dude, did MS pee in your cornflakes this morning?

Once again Microsoft has shown that they are being run by a bunch of morons. Satya needs to be fired pronto before he completely ruins the company.

So microsoft doesn't install whatever video driver it thinks is most appropriate by default?
Color me confused.
It does, but OEMs installed drivers which were given to them by Intel (not MS) on their devices before shipping them to customers. That driver uses features unavailable on the mentioned windows version, so MS is stopping the update for users who likely have that driver until they fix the issue. The issue is out of channel updates by OEMs–this time at least.

Microsoft, so pitiful even We can't test anything properly.

Thanks to ALL our Beta Testers out there, and by that I mean everyone who upgraded past Windows 7.

:)

Yes, because the blue-eyed Caucasian before him nailed iit, amirite?

WTF?

I'm sorry sir, your race card has been declined for repeated fraud. Criticizing Microsoft/Nadella for making a garbage product is not racism.

The company has been having issues since Gates left, if not earlier. Race has nothing to do with it.

The path Windows is following was laid down before Nadella's tenure.

If anything, Nadella made Microsoft relevant again with the focus on cloud solutions. Not my cup of tea, but the money is pouring in.

They've moved on. It is on life support. Yet, try and bring that up, and you'll be lynched. "It just works!!!!!111!1!1". Very well then, enjoy it.

I am getting reports that many windows 10 computers in corp environments attempted to auto update this week and got bricked. Woot way to go MS nice way to cost many companies a ton of money. Anyone else seeing this happen? The only option has been to do a restore or wipe and reimage.

It however is MS fault for making ABI changes a 6month afair ...

*Shrug* I can either say this all the time: "Well, I cannot believe they are doing it again, MS keeps screwing up and we get the sloppy seconds all the time. When will they get it right and make this OS something worth using on a daily basis?" Or, I can just dealing with things as they show up, whether it be Microsoft Windows, Mac OSX or any Linux Desktop distribution, and fix things as we move along. After all, what is the point of complaining about things but not bothering to try to fix them yourselves, in regards to what you have available to do?

Because if there's no backlash then Microsoft has no incentive or need to change the awful way they're managing the product currently -- why should they?

MacOS and Linux haven't been receiving computer-bricking updates to the frequency MS has been delivering them with Windows 10, so suggesting they're on some even playing field isn't reality. The point of complaining is because things are being broken by Microsoft that no one asked them to break, because of their lack of QA and testing. And their fairy tale belief that they could save money by firing their QA division and letting their customers be the beta testers does not create in me or most people a sense of obligation to clean up after MS, or be their unpaid, on-prem break/fix department.

Maybe you live your life passively and just let it wash over you like a wave "oh well it is what it is". Fuck that. Everyone has to decide for themselves: do you ride the horse, or does the horse ride you.

So, Windows has issues well Mac OS and Linux do not, got it. :D Therefore, you do not need to learn anything about the other OSes except how to install them and go. Good luck. :D Also, I am older now and less likely to complain in comparison to my younger years. Less stress that way with the things I can control and for the things I cannot, leave them behind when the opportunity is available. Also, what is the chance that anyone from MS is going to comes to these forums, see the complaints and change anything at all?

Edit: More to the point, your complaints are not all that important to Microsoft, at least if that is all you do.

Perhaps the point isn’t to change Microsoft’s mind directly, but to change tech savvy user’s minds who then influence others?

I can tell you first hand that by learning about some Linux updates and features on here (Steam Play, Lutris), I converted my Windows 10 only gaming laptop to Linux and am generally very happy with the results, which will only improve with time.

Ive also switched 2 other people to macOS, so there’s 3 people who and no longer providing Microsoft with a revenue stream.

Eventually when more people use alternatives, those alternatives will improve causing more people to try them, THEN perhaps Microsoft will listen.

My hope is like the all the failed things MS has done in recent years it’ll be too late for them to change tack, but hey, if it’s before then, then good on MS for firing “subscription first” Nadella

No, you don't get it. Maybe because you don't want to? Furor over Windows 10's new "servicing model" is hardly new. The furor is intensifying and for good reason - it's crap! There were always issues with previous versions of Windows - the Windows ecosystem is complex enough it's never going to be completely problem free, but with Windows 10 pushing out far more features more frequently before and firing their QA to instead rely on "insiders" to do bug testing for them, the overall reliability of Windows patching is in the proverbial toilet.

I'm glad that on my only decent sized network I'm running WSUS on Server 2008r2 and it literally has no idea how to deal with the feature updates, but it does have enough control to keep them completely off. Running old WSUS is far more reliably giving me control over these blasted feature updates than anything else (including newer versions of WSUS) than I've seen, and I follow MS patching fairly closely. I'm perfectly content manually running the Windows update assistant when I want to in order to deploy the feature updates. Usually a few months after they are released just to avoid the crap documented in articles like this.

Oh, I fully get it, you just choose to take a snippet of my post and take it out of context. (In direct correlation to the person I quoted and was responding too.) Just seems a waste to constantlyrip, bitch, grumble and complain, which is all I have ever heard from the person I quoted. You, on the other hand, decided to be helpful and post a link in your other post, which is what a person should be doing. Thanks.

Edit: Basically, I spent way to much time in my life complaining about things and well, I am done with that. Getting things done is what matters, complaining does not help.

Well if I had a clear window screen of Microsoft Feature List with dates released and when new, what they do and choice to use or not - I am sure I would uncheck most of them - ahmm virtually any new one that comes about. Windows is less of a owners OS more of a Corporate OS being updated at whim regardless of the user say so in many cases. I actually liked Major Window Releases with major updates on a new Win OS release while keeping current feature set relatively intact and secure. I never know when I boot up my computer just updated that it will just fail to operate or cause endless issues with major OS revisions.

Yeah, I'm ambivalent towards 1809. I'm curious, but not in a rush. It doesn't matter, as I can't seem to get it.

Just did a clean install of nVidia drivers for my GTX 750 Ti SC. Still can't get 1809.

System:
Dell T3500 (X58) Xeon X5672, 24GB DDR3 ECC
GTX 750 Ti SC, 120GB SSD, 250GB SSD , 1TB WD Blue 7200, 3TB WD USB2 Ext.
Win 10 Home.

Well, that's it, then.

My computer is working pretty much flawlessly.

I hope that I can get 1809 soon to change that.

EDIT: I just mentioned my rig stats because something I read elsewhere stated that MS was only allowing 1809 compatible systems to get the update. All of you Horde, does my system look unworthy of MS 1803 to 1809?

I'm just itchin' to get it because I like new stuff.

A clean install of Windows 10 or you just installed nVidia drivers? If you're doing a full clean install use the latest Windows 10 iso which includes 1809.

No, not a clean install of Win 10, just a clean install of nVidia driver. As my GPU is pretty old at this point I don't really take notice of new drivers. But I thought that updating my GPU driver might make MS happy enough to bless me with 1809.

I'm probably better off waiting.

Thanks, though.

If they werent dealying updates.....whelp. Think ours are delayed 6 months.

The problem going forward is driver support. I loved 7, but I gave up hope for 7 being revived/extended/becoming a subscription product a long time ago. The talent is gone or moved on to other projects and without a serious leadership shakeup I don't see anything changing for the better. Windows isn't their profit maker anymore.

I continue to encourage everyone on these forums to give Linux a shot if you haven't recently. I used to play around with a distro every year or so and thought 'this is a nifty hobby project, but it'll never replace Windows.' That's rapidly changed in the last few years. I've been very happy with Mint and now just plain Ubuntu as my gaming/desktop OS. Hardware just works, there's a robust software library, and there are more [good] games available than I have time to play. Updates are very fast and don't erase my data or brick my system.

Just some funny and truthful meme's. Nothing big.

This is another example of why it should be up to the user in getting updates. Wait until the other users have tested it and whined about it breaking their machine. Then after it's been fixed, you can update.
