31.5" 2560x1440 165 Hz VA G-Sync - LG 32GK850G

Well it looks like this monitor and XB271HU are on the menu, the repair fees on my PG278Q came in, $630, that's more than XB271HU costs new..

I still have my BL3201PT though, so been using this instead for now, might actually take the monitor back and use it as a spare side monitor, going back to single monitor after using dual for so long is a bit jarring

Sale of my PG278Q to an irc buddy fell through due to lack of funds on his part so PM me if you want to inquire. Also selling my metal chassis 27" 2013 mini dp 2560x1440 60hz glossy IPS cinema display and an ergotron MX arm if you need more monitors :)

It would really depend on how close you are sitting and could be mitigated by what your cleartype settings are.
You can also use addons like "NoSquint" to adjust background colors and text sizes on a per site basis or globally.
Personally I dislike white backgrounds so I really appreciate Hardforum's color scheme.

With ClearType you actually want some softening of the edges. You usually want that in games too which is why most people add AA.
You wouldn't want it for doing high detail image editing, cgi, etc but I wouldn't call this a design duty monitor. For gaming it's great.

edit: The bgcolor is especially helpful with nosquint in general. Scaling at different amounts in windows can have very different results on cleartype AA. That is, the AA might look worse at a one scaling % with windows cleartype while it's nearest neighbor scaling percent settings look fine. So it could help or hurt depending on what %.

The purple/dim border (extreme edges of the panel) shift exists on large bright solid color backgrounds on this monitor. If sitting closer than 2' 4" from my monitor to my eyeballs it would become more intrusive and could potentially affect sub pixel rendering colors/tones/levels. For that matter, your overall OSD settings could contribute to the end result as well considering. Your choices in the cleartype selection tool toward your end result too obviously.

"Note that Universal Windows Platform apps do not use ClearType text rendering, but instead rely on greyscale antialiasing. So the parts of Windows 10 which use Universal Windows Platform like the Start Menu or tray applets will not see any difference in text rendering even after you tune ClearType. Only those desktop apps that do not explicitly use DirectWrite, continue to use ClearType."

Anyone using this with gtx 1060 6gb?
I am looking for gsync monitor which will look good for movies, ps4 and also have high refresh rate for smooth browsing and single player pc gaming

This monitor shines for gaming, especially in dimmer lighting conditions where its saturation and black depth are fully realized. Even with it's 2880:1 to 3000:1 contrast ratio, a small 4k tv on the side would be much better for video playback and ps4 if you can swing it imo. Thats what i do. You can get a 32" - 43" tcl on sale pretty cheap relatively.
It works fine for that content but having a 4k tcl next to it with 4171:1 contrast ratio and 4k resolution with semi gloss screen, I wouldn't play videos on the LG normally.

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/lg_32gk850g.htm#movies

Another factor to consider is that this monitor looks best with the vibrance turned up slightly in the gpu drivers (and perhaps a bit more on a per game basis using vibrancer) so using other devices on it might not allow you to boost it on those.

This monitor will be superior than a TV with a good game mode for exactly one purpose: PC gaming.

It will be 'good enough' for the rest, no question, but TV's in far larger sizes are much better positioned for movies and console use. Also, the LG has pretty large pixels- this isn't really a problem in and of itself, I don't mind at all on mine, but I also have a pair of 24" 1080p monitors that I use primarily for browsing and a separate cheap 4k VA monitor for extra desktop space and for videos. Movies/TV shows generally go to the 55" OLED in the living room :).

So, can't tell you what your best course of action is, especially without knowing budget and other requirements, but I can say (again) that the LG 32GK850G will get the job done if 32" 1440p 165Hz G-Sync is what you're looking for.

Thanks! I am used to 27" 1080p ips and just want some upgrade for gaming. but I also watch a lot of netflix and blurays. My ps4 is always connected to monitor at my desk. I never liked to play on a tv and it's never used in my home. I am strictly a pc gamer with ps4 exclusives and movies on both!

I now have this monitor. Got it for about £200 less than retail, as it was a demo model, which is still £550 ish ($700+ lol, UK)...

No dead pixels or BLB, so that's nice. I mirrored TFTCentral config in OSD for contrast, brightness and rgb.

Responding to the various things reported:

* I have not had the OSD bug (I used it about a week straight, all day long. No issues yet)
* Text sharpness is significantly worse than my shitty, ancient, 1080p, 120hz, TN-panel BenQ monitor, even after cleartype / cleartext adjustments in windows (the BenQ has a sharpness option, which I have cranked up, as I like crisp text. I'm somewhat annoyed LG did not include this with something this price). This is more noticeable with black text on white background. Vice versa is not too bad.
* It arrived a bit warm, but colour calibration fixed that
* There is a noticeable colour / black-shift (or silvering) to the sides, if you sit close)
* Right at the edges, maybe about 3-4mm of the image just sort of vanishes (people on Amazon reporting this a lot. Seems to be a VA specific thing). This becomes negligible when sitting further away. I'm about 2 feet or 65cm away from the monitor and I notice both issues. I find this most problematic with text on white background. Media content and gaming is not really affected much
* 165hz resulted in unbearable black smearing with grey text on grey background, the Steam window shows this very obviously when moving the window around and paying attention to the text
* Any OD setting other than 'normal' also resulted in the same issue, pointing to reasonably slow G2G response and a bit of a QC lottery when it comes to this setting, as other people are not reporting this. I run the monitor at normal response time, 144hz. This provides a perfect image, and funnily enough I cannot see a difference to my BenQ, which is a gaming centric TN-film display, so that's actually surprisingly good.
* Black levels are pretty damn good. Not seen anything like this for a long time (I've been on TN and IPS displays for over 10 years now)

I do not use the stupid RGB crap at the back and wish there was an option to just pay £50 less and not have to switch this off.

I think the stand is a bit deep, nullifying any advantage of the monitor being slim. I would like to have it a bit further away from me, really.

Overall I think I paid about £100 too much for this and that is at the massive discount I got. More stable viewing angles and sharper text are the two things I'd want the most. Probably both addressed by getting a deeper desk. In conclusion, it depends on what you want this monitor for. For games and films it's absolutely incredible. For graphics design, office applications and coding, you may take issue with the colour shifting and blurry text. I am really hoping for LG to release a firmware update, or for Windows or Nvidia to include sharpening options somewhere again. Anyone have any idea how likely any of those things are? lol

I knock the digital vibrance up a bit in the nvidia driver panel and I adjusted the RGB levels quite a bit innthe OSD. I also use vibrancer app to up the digital vibrance a bit more on a per game basis. However, there is also this from nvidia:

https://www.geforce.com/en_GB/gfecn...ansel-enhancements-geforce-experience-article

Some of our favorite combinations are “war cinema,” which adds a Vignette filter, reduces the vibrance using the Color filter, and decreases Gamma using Contrast.
Another favorite is “Eagle Eye,” which increases vibrance through Color filter while sharpening the image using Details filter. With a full suite of powerful filters, you can customize your game to your liking.

It would be nice if those settings or reshade's sharpening optons were available globally including on the desktop but it doesn't use the same rendering.

So this monitor again shines for gaming, where sharpness can apparently still be applied along with color vibrance.

I know you are joking but actually it's quite easy to overdo the vibrance and sharpness filters using those tools. It doesn't need to be boosted up to extremes, just a little bump. You can use nvidia driver panel to increase it on the desktop but unfortunately there is no sharpness filter in nvidia drivers or the monitor OSD for outside of games.

Hi guys, anyone noticed a faint vertical lines (scanning lines) on this monitor during a motion, especially with slower framerates ? It's not present all the time though but pretty often and kind of annoying if you know about it. I really liked this monitor and wanted to keep because I underwent really bad lottery of 144Hz TN and IPS panels but this is a deal breaker for me once I started to see it in games.

For first one or two days I really haven't noticed it because I've tried darker games like portal 2, metro redux or soma and this flaw is not very visible there. But once I started FC5, I saw it during motion especially on bright backgrounds like sky or grass.

It looks similar to this but it's not that extensive but definitely visible:

Do you always spot this issue ? I believe it's called pixel inversion. It's similar to this video in this thread or the picture (not mine, it's from different monitor but the same issue) I've uploaded:

I see them, what causes that?

I see them, what causes that?
It's called pixel inversion. A difference between positive and negative voltages during pixel transitions. These must be perfectly in phase. These lines can be vertical, horizontal or checkboard pattern. TN and VA are more prone to this issue than IPS. How bad/good it is depends on luck. The appearance may vary in one model line. On higher PPI panels this effect may be not visible. Also G-SYNC increases the chance to spot the problem because refresh rate is variable and usually this problem is worse the lower you go. I saw it worse between 60 - 80Hz. On 144Hz it wan not pronounced. For example on my Qnix I have no pixel inversion visible at all.

What monitor do you have ?

No, I'm talking about straight vertical lines running all across the screen. It's best visible next to the horse on the right side...

Got it. Wasn't sure where to look and didn't look at the full image.

I can't say that I've seen those on mine, but I haven't played much Witcher 3 on it lately either, mostly stuff that runs at higher framerates. I also sit a bit further back.

do you guys ever get problem when monitor goes into deep sleep and it cannot be awaken? by moving the mouse? I get this annoying behavior once in a while and the only way to fix it is to reboot the system (power off by holding power button)... grrrrrr..... I'm not sure if this is caused by windows (i.e. power settings), nvidia driver or it is monitor fw bug?

Win10 x64 1809 (October release) with 416.16 drivers.

I have had situations like that. I did not have to reboot the machine, I was able to get it back by unplugging the monitor and plugging it back in.

I didn't have this problem and I also haven't had problem with OSD popping up but I would exchange it immediately for pixel inversion I've had :(

Thanks, do you mean power cord? I tried unplugging/plugging displayport cable from GPU and it didn't work ;-(. I've disabled "deep sleep" option, not sure if that will help.

I get OSD popping too, however I've been lucky so far with pixel inversion. It doesn't mean I won't get it. I'm sorry about that :-(. It looks like the QA is very crappy this days...

Yes the power cord. Probably accomplishes the same as shutting the machine down, but without having to actually turn your machine off. Both times after disconnecting the power the screen has come back. FWIW I have had deep sleep turned off since day one.

Does anyone think this monitor will drop in price on Amazon for Black Friday?

thanks I will do that next time. For some reason I had deep sleep on. I still like the monitor but it has some annoying issues, that LG should get of their lazy ars and fix it via fw update. There is no excuse for it. I think we deserve it after paying premium for this display.

Massdrop did a $600 sale, and it's been on Ebay for around that too. That was earlier this year, so it could go lower for the holiday sales.

I have a $150 courtesy credit and $100 GC for Amazon so I have to buy it from there, its $697 currently on there but I don't mind waiting 2 weeks to see if it drops for Black Friday. CamelCamelCamel says it was $620 on Oct 16th so maybe there's hope it will drop for the holidays?

They're going to be giving away this monitor next year when there are 120hz+ 4k 32" variable refresh screens flooding the market.

I’ll believe it when I see it, they have been saying that for years .

Don't see what's so hard to believe about that. Remember when 144hz TN panel g-syncs used to sell for $800? It's part of the cycle. 4k high refresh rate monitors will be the new expensive monitors next year and all the old stuff will get pushed down.

Yes it's a common problem on 32GK850G, my unit did not have this issue and it's a lottery as far my monitoring of similar thread on OCN goes.

Heard about it, disable deep sleep in OSD. If it persists your only luck is to exchange.

No, at least not in EU, Amazon in EU doesn't really drop prices in Autumn, they drop prices in January-March to get rid of stock from last year and make warehouse space for new year, to turn the products around finally so they don't sit too long. They do this during the year occasionally as well, it's how I got 32GK850G for 560 EUR with VAT shipped.

I've been asking them for firmware fix of the popup before I even owned the monitor, nothing no update to this day is available to users, their only solution is to have it serviced aka RMA aka argue with shop to send to to service at LG or find an official LG service center and see if they are up for it.

These panels are nowhere near :/ And monitors (144Hz+) from 2014/15 still sell at almost same prices in 2018. Why? Because their manufacturing costs don't really go down with time hence final product prices neither, there has been competition now and in 2018 hell you can get 1440p 144Hz 27" for around 320 EUR but it's a curved VA with tons of defects = undesirable but still very popular yet the 2014/15 AUO AHVA=IPS based monitors sell for their crazy near 700+ EUR (Gsync, otherwise nearly half but terrible lottery on all and almost all if not all have blurry sharpness issue), they dropped a little to even sell them at all but are still very expensive compared to competing products which unfortunately are all still VA or TN.
We all wish that monitors and electronics in general dropped in price with time especially after years but unless the prices is initially inflated by high profits it will not drop as price is then defined mostly by cost of manufacturing, transportation, ...
Look what Samsung did with HG70, terrible lottery 90%+ defective thanks to their stupid curving process butchering panels and making them curved. They dropped their profit from it a bit to get price down and with refresh in 2018 they stripped wide gamut, local dimming, HDR, strobing, well almost everything really so that they can sell it cheap under 400 EUR instead of often 500+ for HG70.

---

Would you guys be interested in photos and comparison of these monitors/panels? 32GK850G AUO VA, C27HG70 Samsung VA HG70, XF270HUA AUO IPS, AG322QCX Samsung VA HG70. Glow, BLB, viewing angles, sharpness, input lags and side by side comparison for some on photos and videos, pixel structures, it's "endless" ... Would make a new thread for it. It's a lot of stuff and it's hard to keep it ordered and concise. I can also add Q3279VWFD8 since today but that one is 75Hz.

Reading this topic... I am glad that I experienced high refresh rate and I am stil good with 60hz and even 30fps on consoles. This whole high refresh rate craze is kinda going overboard and is tiresome to see everywhere.
We needed 120hz in crt days because those things flickered like hell on 60hz and caused eyestrain. Since every lcd for years now is flicker free, the one image updates over another without an flicker, so 60fps is as fine for eyestrain as 120or 240hz. It's just more smooth to have higher fps but at the same time, with proper motion blur 30fps is fine and 60 is generally ok.
I wish manufacturers would not sacrifice picture quality for refresh rate marketing.
On topic - reports here and on overclock confirm my VA thesis that these panels usually have one or more dead/stuck pixels and of all, are most prone to the issue.

For slow paced singleplayer 60Hz adaptive synced is theoretically OK, but LCD tech kind of ruins this theoretical OK with high amounts of blur present with 60Hz.

For anything multiplayer however there is no comparison, the edge a player gets with 144-240Hz fluid connected feel vs. 60Hz potato is just too big. 75Hz (with double FPS, forget about syncs) is the bare minimum there if you want to get by with less.

It's a good thing you don't need a $1200 video card to push that panel at 60 fps let alone 120.

Uhhhh. The 144hz version of this monitor was $800 in 2014/2015. The 165hz version of it is $600 today and the same one is $500. It's almost half the price it was.

Launched 769 EUR. Rare deals below 700. In 1Q it was at 799 then 724, and hovering in the middle of that for the next year. In 2018 after 2 years of product on shelves it's still at 675-750 EUR.
It depends where you look and how much you cherry pick your links. The AUO M270DAN2.x especially with Gsync has not really moved much anywhere. A 10% drop if even that is laughable in 2 years when there were 3+ competing panels launched.

You can do the same cherry picking with 32GK850G, some people paid 900+ EUR for it few months after launch yet if you wait for deals you can get it for 560 EUR. Meanwhile freesync variant with wider gamut and better saturation, adjustable sharpness (850G has unusable blur and no sharpness adjustment to fix it, OSD pop up bug on all units, ...) has not really moved in price at all, no deals, nothing, sitting at 550-599 EUR.

No one should even be buying any TN monitors a while now, let alone stuff like PG278QR an overpriced to hell TN. Well unless you're a paid pro player or get it from a sponsor then sure I can understand why you would stick with TN.
