Disney+ is Coming in 2019

Following in the footsteps of ESPN+, Disney's CEO Bob Iger revealed that Disney's new streaming service will be called Disney+. The service is expected to launch in the U.S. "in late 2019." If you simply can't wait for the new service, Disney also launched a website for the new service, where you can register your email to receive updates. Netflix recently cancelled many of their Marvel TV series, and given Disney's Marvel emphasis on their platform, there's a chance that Disney's streaming ramp up is related to those cancellations.

Iger also announced that Lucasfilm is in development on a second Star Wars live-action series for Disney+ that will go into production next year. The series will follow the adventures of Rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Diego Luna will reprise the role of Andor, which he originated in the 2016 film. “Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me,” said Luna. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.” The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire. A release date for the series will be announced at a later date. Disney+ is also assembling a live-action series centered around a fan-favorite character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iger today confirmed that Marvel Studios is developing a series based on Loki, the god of mischief, to star Tom Hiddleston.
 
I'm not interested in yet another stand alone streaming service. With or without Star Wars and Marvel. However, Disney is HUGE and there are so many people that will jump on this and they will be successful. Disney has the library, the money, the talent to make this thing succeed. It's like a huge juggernaut. Even if some of us don't buy into it, they have a huge customer base that will.
 
I will definitely not be signing up for this. I really dislike Disney for it's hand in the copyright extensions. Also, I thought their latest movies (Star Wars) pretty much sucked.
 
Will this be the next Origin to Steam but for movies? Everyone hates it but we reluctantly use it to get the things we want.
 
I used to work at Disney.. I kept asking why they did not just self package ESPN streaming.. They finally did it, but by the time they did the only thing it is really good for is NCAA sports. Hardly any pro sports on ESPN anymore.. Kind of the fire sale of sports events..

Disney trying to get people to pay for their own shows / starwars etc.. I don't buy streaming services just for a few movies, I buy it for selection. If I need a movie not in that selection I will just buy it.

Unfortunately, everything is coming to that.

Amazon, Netflix, Vudu etc. are trying their best, but given their huge push for original content, I think they see the writing on the wall. Everyone's slowly pulling their shows and movies to their own platforms.
 
How is that working for CBS with their All Access?

Even if I get them through cable I can’t use them on my Roku.

I have a work around but I’m interested to see if that has paid off for them.
 
I think the company that wins will be the company that prices itself at a point where I wouldn't bother canceling. I won't pay $10.99 a month for Disney+, but I would pay $4.99.

For people like you sure, but for quite a few people $10.99 for the catalog of all Disney movies and properties they own? Maybe not such a bad deal, especially if you have kids.
 
I have a 4-year old. If this gets me the FULL library of Disney Jr. content, I'll probably bite.

What's $12 compared to having *that* episode of *that show* that absolutely must be viewed right now?

If I had a munchin, this would own face and allow me to "cut the cord"/ditch cable.

But since I don't, I try to avoid giving The Mouse my money whenever possible.
 
The Disney Library is why things like this will work. New customers are born every minute. Even poorly received movies like Solo or John Carter will be watched by some new customers at some point. Disney is a master of the 'Long Tail' retail concept.
 
Sick of the package game. Put all shit in one place or fuckoff. I already get all my shit in one place - and it's across all formats, all companies, all shows, all movies... It's called the interwebz... and it has no restrictions on when I watch my shit. How I watch my shit, or what I watch.
 
I'd be willing to give it a try. I don't tend to stick with a given streaming service forever, instead choosing to switch between them depending on what I want to watch. Low (non-existent?) switching costs are great.

Yup, considering many of the things my guy likes are hard to find even in the less that legal arena being able to have everything in one spot is great... of course that's a big if there, if they only have the most recent episodes and moves are dolled out at a rate they find acceptable then screw that
 
I have a wife and two young children 5 and 3 … as much as I don't want yet ANOTHER streaming service I know I am going to end up paying for this.

Well, this is certainly the ala carte that people have been asking for. As long as the prices are reasonable and I don't have to have 20 different launchers installed in the background, I'm cool with it.
 
Every damn content provider is starting to spin up their own channel: CBS, Disney, HBO, AMC, etc., etc. It's going to rapidly get to the point to where there are too many to manage--who's going to pay $8/mo to each of 7 or 8 different services?

Someone will wind up creating a package deal where they bundle a bunch of these streaming services for a single price.
 
The way it’s heading - they will all get bought out until the entire market is only controlled by 2 or 3 major players.

You know, exactly like Cable is now....
 
'Disney +' ; for the six people that don't already own ( the entire Disney catalog and ) a pirated copy of Frozen.

(Disney youtube channel ( which is free ) has 3.6 million subscribers, statistically one can count on ten percent of that number to actually buy the product. So at ten bucks a month that works out to Disney pulling in 42 million a year with the cost of operation being probably less than 4 million ( or ten percent ) . That's a pretty good P&E ratio , but ...

Can Disney keep Streaming on people for a year ( and get away with it )?

Whom doesn't already own most of the Disney catalog ? ( meaning: they are most certainly going to be , for the streaming service, relying heavily on new content and NEW CUSTOMERS (which will drive operational cost way up))

With the Acquisition of Fox can the Disney stock be profitable if Marvel takes a hit ( Captain marvel potentially crashing and burning the MCU the way TLJ+Solo did SW ) , Star wars continues to Glaringly fail, and they nerf the Fox properties ( Disney Archer anyone ?) ?

Why the HELL is Disney waiting till late 2019 ? ( when the streaming service was suppose to start early 2018; goto question 2 )

Remember , KK sold Ted Turner the rights to the original Star Wars films ( untill 2024; ) So a HUGE existing and historically money spending customer base is inaccessible to Disney ( and has been thoroughly insulted and told REPEATEDLY they are unneeded and and unwanted by disney/Lucasfilm)

The star wars resistance trailer has 148,000 dislikes:

..management of everything disney , except the MCU, leaves one wondering if the execs have been licking the lead paint off of the window sills of the disney fairy castle.

I think the Fox merger+the mutilation of star wars will , in future analysis, be the defining moment in the down turn of the Disney empire , and the streaming service is a desperate attempt by Disney at regaining some control over the social narrative that they have been aggressively pushing. They now have far too many IP's constrained under a small pool of VERY myoptic management personnel with a track record echo-chamber group think , and customer disdain.

If Disney can prove me wrong I will be delighted , but I am not holding my breath, and am very curious to see how long it takes a 46 billion pound ice castle to melt in the the California sun .

I don't know... Telling them no?

Worked fine for my kids. But then I never used the TV as a baby sitter.

As mentioned above, Disney can go pound sand.

Things like potty training and the setting and enforcing of boundaries and rules are very different things. Any child can learn to respect rules regardless of how fast or slow they learn.

I suppose I am fortunate to have a good kid. When he behaves in a manner that justifies reward, then he gets it. If that's watching a Halloween episode in June of his favorite show, then that's what it is.

When he doesnt behave, then he is missing out on the same. I see no reason to force him to enjoy substitutable goods when it's not necessary. He does not get everything he wants; he gets what he earns. Sometimes what he wants and earns isn't available and he deals with it appropriately.

All that, of course, must be understood in the context of a 4 year old.

Like I said. You do you. My formula has thus far produced a loving, kind, intelligent and responsible member of society. Maybe yours has done the same with your kids. I'd hope so.

Hey if you want to call it enforcing of boundaries by not letting your kid have his favorite blanket, that stuffed animal, or watch a cartoon that he so dearly loves then that's fine. My point was that kids behave differently so the "it works for my kids" response is just that, it works for your kids
