Final Fantasy XV director and Luminous Productions COO and head of studio Hajime Tabata has announced that he has left Square Enix. As a result of this shakeup at the studio, 3 of the 4 upcoming DLC for the game have been canceled. Fans will still get Episode of Ardyn DLC in March 2019, new Comrades multiplayer content, and a collaboration between Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XV is still on the schedule. DSO Gaming thinks features such as NVIDIA RTX DLSS support, Vulkan API, and mod tools are in jeopardy. Yesterday Square Enix announced financial losses for 2018 and a worrying outlook for early 2019.

It's almost going to be two whole years since the release of Final Fantasy XV. I honestly believe the reason we were able to get this far is because of all you loyal fans. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Today, I have a personal announcement to make to all of you. I, Hajime Tabata, will be resigning from Luminous Productions and the Square Enix Group... I was able to gain so much experience with my time at Square Enix. Every title I was able to be a part of means a lot to me.

FFXV was such a cluster fuck. They should of put two more years into it's development before it was released. Then tried to milk us with crappy dlc to try and complete it. I didn't hate FFXV but still ranks near the bottom of the list for me.

I really stopped caring about FF at 10, (not X-2, just X), 11 was MMO (not interested), 12 I just couldn't get into (maybe age/time related on my end), 13 was such an annoying linear fuckall of a game that made a mockery of the whole series plus I wasn't a fan of the interface, 14 another MMO, and 15 showed off the game as if you are in charge of a Japanese boy band who drives around in a convertible "Cadillac" which just didn't draw me in at all. Now I'm really of the age where I don't have time to play this shit, I mean I got Dragon Quest 11 because it looked like it stuck to it's roots as a medieval/fantasy setting, but played maybe 45 minutes. So yeah it's probably my fault the games suck now :D

You aren't alone in pretty much everything you stated (except FF12 was the last FF I liked, and no I won't mention X-2 because it was horrible). FF13 was where they really lost me and FF15 isn't going to get me back. At some point, graphics began to trump the story and they never looked back.

FFX killed my enjoyment for the series. Yet, I still buy them hoping to rekindle that old flame. World of Final Fantasy came close.

If you're interested in a JRPG that's similar, then I fully recommend DQXI.

I must be one of the few who actually enjoyed FFXV and I did't like all the FF's between X and XV and I didn't care for the ones between 7 and X either.

Holy crap. The hit parade against Nvidia's new features just keep coming.

I mean, this isn't even an "RTX" problem. This is a major AAA title falling apart at the seams internally.

So, we have the October Windows update in forever limbo holding up ray tracing support in Windows... FF XV team falling apart... ROTR being kind of a flop of a game... BFV late to the party...

There are plenty of good games out there but you have to admit the current quarter's game releases and hardware launches have been just uniformly a cluster.

Oh, and sfsuphysics: I'm no spring chicken either but Dragon Quest XI really is amazingly good. You've got to get well past that starting village before anything even starts happening. The game seems very meh during the first couple hours and you think it's going to be just way too childish to tolerate. But no. It's so long it takes as much time building characters and backstory up as a 3 book fantasy trilogy. And it's ALL fully animated and voice acted. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but I liked it enough to be typing this. Amazing game you really get your moeny's worth out of.

I enjoyed FFX. I didn't bother with underwater soccer hockey, though. I got most of the hidden summons though. That was a stupid hard challenge.
It's been 20 years and I still play FFVII. Still haven't finished the game in it's entirety. I just never seem can't seem to get enough hours with chocobo racing and breeding to get one to get to KoTR summon

I have the same problem with FFX as I do with FFXIII. It's entirely too linear and the only noteworthy thing was the battle system.

Just more evidence of the cracks beginning to show. SqureEnix, EA, Activision/Blizzard to name a few are all grasping at straws now to remain viable to the masses. The problem is that they are all doing anti gamer practices now. SE announced subscription models. EA is EA. Blizzard just announced mobile Diablo to much criticism.

I think at this point SquareEnix is just trying to justify a corporate mentality and the halfway decent developers are giving the bird and moving on.

Square Enix is trying to remain viable. They are losing money and made the decision to get the game out and then try for DLC revenue.

The others not so much. EA has made 1.58B in EBITDA in 2018. Activision/Blizzard made 2.5B in EBITA for 2017.

What is happening is they are pivoting away from a small niche of gamers like this forum. The money is creating a game that is long lasting that you have control over to monetize how the market sees fit and that is mostly multiplayer. Dedicated servers, modding, etc are GONE. It is unfortunate but true.

The market has changed. The demand for their products got to a point where they could make changes in order to protect and generate more growth. This is what every business does.

Haven't really enjoyed, or finished, a FF game since X. Bought XV hoping it would be good. The gameplay itself was tolerable, even if I am salty about it not being turn based, but the story turned me off faster than a tranny granny hooker on Sunday. I think I might have put 2 hours into XV, which is funny since I bought a PS4 pro just to play XV in 4k.

On one hand it's strange to cancel a whole project because one guy leaves. Is there no other leadership in that company? (Oh wait.)

But then again... if he leaves and takes his DLC with him, good riddance.

FFX was the first PS2(?) game so there was the big graphics jump there, and the summoned creatures actually fought for you instead of being a glorified spell with fancy graphics so that was neat. Although the "sidequest" game Blitzball was a kick in the nuts, like seriously? Somehow they made a big spherical ball of water that people could hold their breaths the entire time? Those little mini-games are supposed to be simple, like a card game or something, not a full on game within a game.

I did finally get back to finishing FF XII with the rerelease. Good game overall. Couldnt get into 13 and 15 was meh. Played the crap out of 14 and still login every week or so.

Can't say I was surprised about the continued money sink of XV, though. Way too much going into the title for very obviously dwindling return.

Also have to heartily recommend DQ XI. That title was the old school JRPG everyone was waiting for.

Something doesnt add up.
The blurb from NVidia suggested game devs give them the games code and a DLSS algorithm is produced. As simple as that for the game companies.
The algorithm is made available for download by NVidia

How has this become a dropped target?
The process must be a lot more trouble for game devs than NVidia let us believe.

I enjoyed FF 15, first FF game I enjoyed since 8, however the last 1/3rd of the game was clearly rushed.

I played 7,8 and 10. Loved them. FFX was one of the few JRPGs I 100%'d.

Nope, same here. I dislike turn-based JRPGs so this was actually a FF game that I liked. Didn't feel the need to buy DLC for it.

FF6 (3 in the US) is still my favorite followed by 7 and 10. 12 was alright but FF in my mind should be a JRPG and not a fpsrpg

Damn. Wonder what this means for the FFVII remake?
Nothing. FFXV was far from a failure in their eyes. They lost some money cause they are restructuring things. SE is big company and not going anywhere any time soon. The got a big game coming out in January called kingdom hearts 3. It is retard that everyone is all doom and gloom over a bad fiscal report. They will be fine. It might be the kick in the ass that finnaly gives them focus again.

Well said

FF nearly lost me at 9, enjoyed 10 (not x2), passed on 11, 12 gambit system lol, played 13 long enough to be forced to assume the role of Hope and traded the game for Heavy Rain, 14 (trial) would put me to sleep while playing it and never touched 15.

I would say, 7, tactics, 6, 3, 8, and core (on psp?) were my favorite.

This guy gets it.

9 was where they started going a little sideways and after 10 I was done. Hate it too because that was a series that I didn't mind paying retail price due to all the hours I'd get out of the games.

make a new game you fucks. ffxv was a recycled failed game that should have launched in 2006. I know ffxiv is the only real ff still around, and it has been excellent for sure, but everyone deep down in side wants a really good open world sp ff game.

The deal with 9 was they were afraid that after 7 and 8 that they would be forced to keep the sci fi, normal bodied look for the perpetuity of the series and needed to reset expectations, in which they succeeded in wildly. How you liked the story or other aspects of the game is debatable.

14, despite being an MMO, is the best final fantasy game since X in my opinion. It is the most FF at its core and the MMO elements only add to the long term playability of the title. It has the best music in a decade, and so many ways to play that it's overwhelming. The story is pretty good, and there is humor throughout to keep you grinding away. If you can find a few friends to play it with you, it's the best FF experience for me since the ps1 era.

I gave up on this series. So many great games like Albert Odyseey : Lengend, Lunar, and Golden Sun that I need to finish. Later Breath of Fire games look good too.

meh, ffxv was ok. the only FF game that i started and didn't finish. It's been a while since i last played it but even tho it was fun i just didn't have the same need to finish it. The story just wasn't enough. Unlike some of their other titles, this one just didn't cut it.

I feel ya I used to be such a hardcore gamer as a kid but at 40 now I really dont game much anymore, cant explain it. At least my 9 year old son has taken over for me. I still like to build PC's and buy games but not play them.
