PCGamer reports that Fallout 76 now has a hard 63 FPS framerate cap. Before the update on November 5th, the game would run at the monitor's refresh rate. Bethesda hasn't made any official note of it yet, but the cap will presumably mitigate the framerate-related speedhacks that plagued earlier Fallout 76 betas. The FOV is still hard-locked too, but fortunately it seems to scale dynamically with the monitor's aspect ratio, which should make playing on ultra-wide monitors more palatable.

As for the framerate cap, it appears to be fully enforced and hard-coded into the engine. Previously, Fallout 76 would run at your display's desktop refresh rate, up to 75Hz, or half the refresh rate on high-end gaming displays (eg, 72fps on a 144Hz display). Now, the maximum in-game framerate is 63fps as far as I can tell, slightly higher than 60 in order to reduce microstuttering. That applies to 75Hz and 144Hz displays as well, though if you run at a lower rate like 98Hz you'll end up at 48fps if you set iPresentInterval=1. There's only one more beta period before the game is set to officially launch next week. Bethesda may revisit the framerate lock and eventually allow higher framerates in the future, along with FOV adjustments, but that remains to be seen. There are likely plenty of other higher priority items to fix right now.

they are making it too easy with this one. refresh rate? locking the fps? are you kidding me? and they will sell a bazillion copies still.

Next up will be resolution and graphics will be "dynamic" and nonadjustable so that you get exactly 60 fps, just like the consoles.

I hope they really drop the ball and you need a controller to navigate the menu on first install in order to enable keyboard/mouse controls.

At this point just make it a mobile game, i mean its running on a 10 year old engine anyway.

Seems like this needs a lot more time. I try to play my games at 144fps, no fucking way am I settling for 63fps in an online only shooter.

Gotta love mandatory updates you can't opt out of. It's amazing how this is being ADDED. Back in the old days, if a company released a patch with a terrible addition, you could just keep playing the old one.

Its almost like you post these just for everyone to shit on. The cool kids don't play Fallout games anyway, Luckily I'm really old. :)

No, we're not talking about Fallout 1 you old geezer :) . The new Fallout games are fairly popular.

Easily the biggest negative thing with FO4 was having fps tied to physics. Made the game 1000x less appealing. So i guess i'll pass with this one.

Stupid question, if Physics is still locked to FPS, wouldn't that mean that Physics will still be affected by FPS dropping? Sounds like Bethdesia is just trying to hide the problem, rather then working on a proper fix.

It might be similar to the Destiny 2 frame rate bugs. Certain tracking weapons were only ever tested at the console default of 30FPS. On PC anywhere above that, the tracking misbehaved, with it getting worse the higher the framerate went. The Colony grenade launcher was the one most visibly affected: it flat out was unusable on PC. So maybe the physics engine is tested to work properly up to 63 Hz, but past that is where it starts screwing up. I suppose someone could test it by using a utility to hard limit the framerate.

Exactly.

A strange form of passive aggressive behavior. ;) I'm sure you read the "games" word, perhaps you are not sure what it means. ;)

Ha! And I thought this was pathetic three years ago. Now you're just a laughing stock, Bethesda.

2009 wants its silky smooth framerate back!

I'm a huge BGS RPG fan actually. I don't have enough spare time for Fallout 76 atm, but I'll almost certainly buy it some day, warts and all.

However, you make a good point. These beta engine issues are kinda the elephant in the room right now, but FO76 news won't always be negative.

I never really got the appeal of Fallout anyway TBH. It has always looked bland, boring, and dated to me. *shrug*

every new update on fallout 76 sounds more horrible then the last.

Why are they still using Gamebryo/NetImmerse? WHYWHWYHWYWHHWYW eat me Bethsoft, and your shitty bloated engine too.

I love Todd Howard's response on Reddit

"“I think a lot of people, who are not making games don’t understand what the word “engine” stands for,” Howard said. “They think the engine is this one thing, we view it as technology. There’s a lot of different pieces and for every game, parts of that change. For example the renderer, the AI, the animations, the script language and so on. Some people talk about Gamebryo but we haven’t used that in a decade. A lot of our engine contains a lot of middleware like Havoc.”"

So now you know. Its not Gamebryo any more, its Gamebryo with stuff bolted on. :D

I decided during the FO76 reveal to skip this game and it looks like I made the right decision. TBH I only watched the Bethesda show because I was waiting for stuff about Cyberpunk.

Todd Howard comes on stage like he's the game industry version of Steve Jobs. With FO4 they did the whole "Looks its Fallout 3 but purdier but we made it dumber, less immersive and broke things and tried to make it better for the ADHD console crowd" bullshit. I understand multiplayer was the next step from a business/marketing "OMG!!" standpoint, it just made me realise that i'm unlikely to ever buy another Bethesda game. Theres always hope, I might see a single-player only mod on Nexus one day and I'm sure it'll drop to £10-15 within 3 months.

According to many the engine comes from the Morrowind engine. I sure wish that was true, as I have not used it in over a year as OpenMW just kicks its ass. I guess I'll have to see if OpenMW will run the F 76 assets. ;)

Well this game engine just adds to the aggravation that is PC gaming. My monitor can do 75 hertz or 60 hertz but some games will choose the highest refresh rate even if you have it set to 60 hertz in Windows. That means last night when I was playing Fallout 4 it was actually only running at 37 FPS which was sluggish as hell. And what's even more fun is that most monitors won't even do a real 60 hertz instead doing that 59.95 which causes some hitching in some games when trying to run vsync at 60fps. What I do is use CRU to make a real 60 hertz but now the latest Nvidia driver breaks that and the guy that made CRU doesn't know when he'll have an update if at all. Dealing with bullshit like that in Windows and in games just makes me want to sell off all my parts and buy a fucking console.

Fine, you meant Fallout 1,2, and Tactics, sorry. You old geezer :).

I have 1 and 2, never played em', I don't like that kind of thing. I have played all the Fallout 3D games on the hardest settings and I have never used VATS. I'd guess you would be a VATS user, as passive aggression fits that so well. Me, I just shoot stuff, in the head if possible. ;)

Played Yesterdays BETA, for 2hrs. Didn't see a single person, and the fact that the game still had the terrible delay from when you shoot something, to when it dies... No thanks.

you Can keep it.. canceling my Fallout 76 Tricentenial pre-order to...

This puzzles me. I have moderate machinery and my game is sweet. I play at 2560x1600, and have a GTX 1070 mainly because of the display. I have an old i5 running at under 3 GHz and the game comes off a spinning disk. I run the game Fullscreen in game and on Nvidia settings, in win10. My 301 Sparta will only do 60 FPS but it stays up there pretty well all the time and my game has no lag, no jitter and is a joy to play. WTF?

A lot of people have the lag and jitter problem but I don't, and I'd like to know why.

63fps??? What an odd number.

It has been long known that the engine has problems because it ties physics calculations to framerate.

They really should have replaced the engine before releasing what likely is a long term project.

The ID Tech engine used in games they have published in the last few years is so good too. Why couldn't they just have used that?

The requirements for an RPG engine are very different from a shooter. It has to allow looting, selective looting, solved for idtech x by running over the item. It has to allow interacting with the game world in a much fuller way, not just shooting a mob. All this RP crap makes for a much different engine.

Now they tried to sell Rage as a more RP version of idtech but that was just insulting.

You are just oblivious to it. Plenty of people don't notice certain things. My parents used to sit right in front of a CRT monitor running at 60 hertz and it never bothered them one bit nor did they even know what the hell I was talking about when I would try to put it at 85 to get rid of the flickering. Plenty of people don't even see screen tearing and act like vsync is not even needed in games. Even when the shittiest most technical mess of a game is released there are always people that say the game runs fine for them which is always quite hilarious.

I'll fully admit that I have never developed a game, and have little insight into the process, but my understanding was that most game engines are very malleable and you can integrate almost any feature (like selective looting) into them.

Many different applications like this have certainly been done with the Unreal engine, and the old Valve Source engine seems capable of it as well.

Is the ID Tech engine just very limited?

The reason I brought it up was because I was very impressed with its rendering performance, but if ID Tech is off the table, certainly there has to be a more suitable engine out there than the garbage they are using?

LOL. No I'm not. I have been playing video games since Doom came out. I have spent my time playing Quake MP on a 28.8 modem and developing ways to deal with lag, like you puppies have never seen. I am pleased with my present setup that plays Doom really quite well and I play that on UV, although I could do Nightmare but I'm not prepared to work that hard.

My Fallout 76 game has gone from a choppy somewhat laggy experience, to full on smooth sweetness as I changed things and Bethesda did too. YMMFV.

You are not understanding. If you're oblivious to something then of course you don't think that you're oblivious to it because you don't know any different. Again some people just don't notice certain things and you clearly don't notice the little stutters and jitters that this game engine has.
