SK Hynix launched what it claims is the world's first "4D" NAND. The new 96-layer TLC chips have a capacity of 512gb (or 64GB) each, and will go into production this year. They also claim that 1TB SSDs using the company's own controllers and firmware will come out this year, while 1tb chips, QLC variants, and enterprise and mobile SSDs using the new flash should come in 2019.

SK Hynix combined its 3D CTF with PUC for the first time in the industry, which is different from the way of integrating 3D Floating Gate and PUC. As a result, it attained the industry’s finest performance and productivity. The Company named the product ‘CTF-based 4D NAND Flash’ to distinguish it from current 3D NAND Flash technologies. The 4D NAND chip reduces more than 30% of chip size and increases bit productivity per wafer by 49% compared to the Company’s 72-Layer 512Gb 3D NAND. Moreover, the product has 30% higher write and 25% higher read performance. Also, its data bandwidth is doubled to the industry’s biggest 64KB (Kilobytes). With the introduction of a multiple gate insulators architecture, its data I/O (Input Output) speed reaches 1,200Mbps (Megabits/sec) at 1.2V (Volt) of operation power.

It's just 3D NAND with a greater layer count than in the past, correct?

These marketing names are starting to get ridiculous.

It also bothers me that Samsung is now calling their TLC drives "3-bit MLC". Not technically wrong, but highly misleading.

Someone will have to explain to me what "4D" actually means......because "4D" is usually a gimmick for a theme ride...

Unless it can travel through time, calling it 4D is fucking useless, stupid and just going to cause more problems than it "solves".

The marketing asshat needs to be slapped with a rolled up newspaper and told "no!".
