7-Eleven Is Testing Cashier-Less Checkout in Texas

That is something that was never prolific where I live. There is a single 7-11 that I know of within 30 miles of me. I have only ever been there once and that was 20 years ago. I know it is still open, but never had a reason to go there vs anywhere other place.

Depends on the location. The Walmart near me has 16 smaller stations and 8 "normal sized" stations. All are normally running vs maybe 5 of the 20 manned registers during normal business hours, 1 or maybe 2 manned lanes after midnight. So those lines normally go much faster given that you are able to get to a self check out faster than a manned station. Addition of self checkout did not change the number of manned stations, just allowed more lanes to check out really. Normally I can get to a self checkout lane by just walking up to one while manned lanes might have 4 - 6 people waiting in a line.

I view my time as having value. If the self checkout line gets me out of the store 5 - 10 minutes faster that is of value to me. If your time has no value then yes your statement is true.

My walmert is run like shit. I go for self checkout if there are a lot of people waiting in line. But my Walmart has about 8 self checkout lanes. But the problem is the idiots that run it have like 2 cashiers running. Its like shit. Plus the self checkout computers are really laggy and slow. I am not sure what they did here, the Walmart is actually a super center and fairly new. On the other hand Target right across it has a good balance and only 4 self checkout counters but their computers are super fast and no lag at all. When I only have like 2 items I am grabbing I go for self checkout. if I have a lot of items I don't bother scanning them all.

Walmart self checkouts for me get clogged because they have like 2 cashiers open so almost everyone goes to self checkouts so it sort of defeats the purpose. lol

The Walmart self checkout is very fast and accurate. The Ingles Grocery self checkouts.....very slow.

As for 7-11, I would like it if they stocked more "real" food like those in the Japanese/Korean stores. All we get in the USA is stale hot dogs and burgers and pizza.

You mean like H-Mart? I dont want to live anywhere that doesnt have an H-Mart lol. How would I ever make pho or Hot Pot at home??

The only ones I find who hate self checkout don't understand how to use them. I refuse to use a cashier any chance I get. I'm faster, I don't stick shit that doesn't belong together in the same bag, I don't over stuff bags, I don't have to guess what this strange vegetable is because I'm a picky dipshit teen who only eats garbage and most importantly I don't have to interact with people I couldn't care less about.

Good god yes. I do all the family grocery shopping because the wife would have to do it with our youngest during the week, ( and I magically am able to always have the bill lower :p), and I wish they would just have 3-4 floating cashiers to authorize the alcohol sales etc , and just have ALL the lanes be open and self checkout at all times at WalMart. No reason to have 3/4 the physical lanes not open because no cashiers there.

I can scan and bag shit faster than 99% of cashiers I’ve seen , I can fit things in less bags , with them stacked right where they actually make sense.

And I don’t want to talk to anyone , hear the lady in front of me tell her story of how her day is after the cashier just asked her and slows down even more, nor answer any questions about applying for a CC or a single other damn word.

The Wally World I go to the most has two large self checkout sections on each end , staffed at all times with someone who immediately overrides for beer etc. Then 3 or 4 cashier lines when there are 20 empty lanes.

Take those cashiers and have them float and open all the lanes at all times for self checkout.

The best part about self checkout? No old ladies writing checks for $5 worth of shit. After waiting until they get the total before even starting to dig ito the checkbook mind you. I'll live with the ever decreasing number of old people and luddites confused by technology in how to operate these things.

man.. i am beyond even having to use ANY checkouts at the grocery store nowadays.. since I dont even go there at all. it comes directly to me instead.

Really like that method even more.

Yeah, but the calculus here is: does money saved by not having to employ as many staff outweigh the loss incurred via theft?

A dollar missing here and there adds up very quickly. But overall ? It's probably cheaper to just automate it. Automation doesn't call in sick or need health benefits. That's where they save.
