ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti Video Card Review @ [H]

Just got a notification from NewEgg. They're carrying the Strix 2080TI now. Out of stock, of course, but this is the first U.S. seller I've seen. Prices this morning, $1319-1349.

Great review, are you still planning on testing out NVLink SLI and finding out if it brings anything extra to the table?

sure are a lot of reports of these cards going bad.

Mostly FE cards, there have been some third party cards as well but the FE seems to be the standout card in that respect.

Supposedly down to the micron gddr6 not handling the frequency well. Seen a couple of people say clocking it down 50-100mhz fixes the issues. Not ideal though.

would putting it under water make the FE cards behave? I know that FE cards tend to be hotter than third parties. At least, my 1080 ti is pegged at 84 c

No idea, it might do, might not. The FE cooler is better than the blower coolers, though seen mixed reports about temps on them.

Just a heads up that Zotac isn't paying for shipping in an RMA scenario, apparently.

Thanks. To be honest I’m more stressed out about the prospect of having to wait weeks before the RMA card is back in stock again. RTX 2080 Ti are still ridiculously impossible to get if you are just a touch picky. I want would like a decent cooling solution than is fairly quiet. The Asus ROG Strix 2080 Ti sounds like a perfect pick.

I'd hope you would call more attention to the "FanConnect" feature which is unfortunately found only on Asus ROG cards. This is just a PWM fan header which permits slaving case fans to that of the GPU. This is very important in coordinating the process of getting heat off the card and out of the enclosure. As simple as it is, Asus seems to be the only one bothering. Some years ago I suggested it to a number of AIB makers, with no response. And reviewers never pay attention to it, presumably because they test open-bench.

Let's maybe get some love for this. It's a lot more important than RGBling and should be standard on enthusiast cards - not rare.

You are correct, that should have been called out. I think we did in the preview articles. But yeah, we missed it and it is pretty snazzy if you need it, and totally out of the way if you don't.

The price of this card just make me lose interest - other than as a novelty. My 1080ti is giving me a great 4K experience, and if a game is too demanding, I just switch over to my 1440p 144Hz G-sync monitor for some buttery smoothness.

My thoughts exactly man! I went to that Newegg page, and that price made my eyes hurt. I'm going to buy a 4k panel instead of this card, but I am genuinely impressed by its performance!

I think there's 3 important details people should take note with these cards.

1. Kyle took the extra steps to test the manually maxed out setting in games like KCD, SOTR, MEA, GTAV. Most sites are not doing that and even fewer gamer's come forward with honest numbers of how their rigs get brought down by them and that leads to point 2. My 1080SLI comes close but the best I can do for SOTR is TXAA for those same FPS. Price for those 2 cards is only slightly less. Similarly so for the other games.

2. Performance costs to do these fps #'s have already been there for a few years now. People used to call them Titans. I couldn't afford them then or now. Sure there's a mix match of spec comparisons but even back then they were the only single gpu solution capable of getting this close. Chasing the pixel dragon has never been cheap. Strix models are also a customized PCB and cooling solution. Many AIB's simply slap their own cooling on them. The performance/cooling/loudness metrics can't be touched by others for the whole package and thus why they too cost a bit more.

3. I think it's a shame NV called these 2080TI's. To me there should've been a more thorough naming scheme than just RTX. The cards in of themselves are impressive and this review shows it but the name provides expectations that may not be accurate for all. If/when their extra RTX/DLSS features come into play they'll distance themselves even further from what the previous TI's were so again I really believe a totally different name would've changed most expectations and perceptions of this card.

This card is still on my list. Just got some other things I want to get first.

Seen a few of these in stock today at a uk retailer, a fucking SNIP at £1500..or $1950. Asus tax +"supply and demand"+retailer gouging = fuck that shit.

I feel for you guys, wow that's some real world class milking.

I read an article discussing how it seems in the near future the end Moore's law will make the chip makers compete on features, since clock speed is leveling out. Not good news for us customers, as we see more differentiation in features, it will likely lead to further increases in prices as we are sold by marketing on the value of these features, and thus needing to pay up.

Nice review, the performance bump y'all pulled out of it was impressive. I usually go Strix personally, and always had great results.

I'm curious to see if the overhead is just Asus (and nVidia) planning ahead for when those Tensor cores are active on these TDP throttled cards. Is shunting still an option?

As for the failure reports, a waterblock may help if the 20X0 series is like many of the 10X0, where none or only some of the memory is actively cooled.

Honestly, this just makes me hungrier for the 7nm refresh and whatever AMD brings out for the highend on 7nm next year.

Good luck buying one of these strix cards, i've yet to see them in stock at any retailer. This and the msi trio seem virtually MIA, a few people somehow have them but not many. Whereas palit, inno3d and zotac are like flies on a big freshly laid pile of shit....plentiful

I woke up at 345am on Nov. 1 and just happened to check Nowinstock and it showed this card in stock at Newegg. I bought one and it will be here in a few days but when I checked Nowinstock after I made the purchase it was no longer in stock. I don't know how many Newegg had but it couldn't have been many, I would hope I didn't get the ONLY one.

Some days I leave NowInStock up on a monitor for a few hours or check in thru out the day for laughs. Great resource but hilarious to look at the recent stock histrory or to see things available and then blink and they're gone.

Yea, its crazy how fast stock on these disappears. The only one's I see consistently are the Nvidia FEs.

Still think I am going to wait and see what AMD comes out with before upgrading...I keep hearing reports of 2080ti cards failing at a pretty high rate...not sure if this is just "Founders" cards or if others are affected, but will wait to see how it all shakes out.
I think they’ve all but given up on the high end and will offer midrange perf like 1080 or so levels. Midrange cards I read add more to the bottom line since they sell so many of them and they’re cheaper to make.

Waited awhile for this review as I promised not to read others until this one came out. Insane performance still in rasterization regardless of the rtx nonsense. Not on my radar though as I finally got my 1080 ti running on water and want to enjoy it awhile. I think once these are in the channel long enough and demand goes down I'll bite. Oh and they stop dying.

We don't know this. ALL of this speculation is based on ONE quote from months ago...which may or may not be accurate at all.

I know I got my card with only a 1440p screen on hand, but the 1440p 120 fps consistent gameplay has me sold on a 2080 ti performance numbers. I will go 4k when I can have my 4k 120hz framerate as well. I've been enjoying a butter smooth experience with FC5 where in some situations, my 1080ti was dipping low enough to notice.

Argh! Fucked a bit up here, guys... Finally found it as incoming stock here and quickly pulled the trigger. Got the track and trace and found out I have bought the A11G version, not the O11G version so lower boost clock. I think I will keep it though as it is impossible to get a 2080 Ti with top notch cooling here which is really important to me. And I suppose I can still win in the silicon lottery, right?

I don't think you should worry too much about the OC versions too much. I got a EVGA XC and Asus dual fan here and have been able to match the strix review in performance and within 25mhz of their max overclock without having it go nuts on fan speed.

I ordered the card about 10 days ago when it was actually available at Newegg for a few hours. (got very lucky) Then I started to have second thoughts .... really wanted the EVGA FTW3 version of the 2080ti.

But after reading this review I feel good about the decision. The card either arrived late afternoon at my local FedEx branch office or is due this morning...(confusing messages/texts left on my phone late afternoon yesterday).

Hope there will be no issues w/ the 12" card fitting into my new Phanteks Evolv X case. I will use a support bracket to eliminate GPU sag.

EXCITED! The card going into an Asus Maximus Hero (WiFi) XI with a 9900K (IF THAT EVER COMES IN)...

Thanks for the reminder. I had read and forgotten about that detail with the binned chips. As I'm saving again for the strix it'll be helpful.

Sheesh, lucky again, I guess... I just picked the Strix up at the local FedEx at noon (didn't want it shipped to the condo & left on the steps), and it's the # 011G. I need to go buy a lottery ticket... things breaking my way this week! (knock on wood).

Yes, I paid $1,349. ( I'll have to sell my Ping golf clubs...)

My Strix 2080 Ti arrived today along with my Intel I9 9900K and ASRock Taichi z390 Ultimate MB. Just got finished installing them all and just in time for the long holiday weekend.

Two days ago received the Strix... But, I'm returning it today to get the EVGA 2080ti FTW3 Ultra.... I'm soo decisive.

Gotta say this is a damn fine card so far. Out of the box, it goes up to around 1950 on load and temps are nice and low as per the review (although this is the A11G version). Definitely thinks it was well worth it to pay 12% over the 2080 Ti FE. Haven’t even play with overclocking yet.

Good review... RTX series enhances the divide between many FPS gamers that game at 1920x1080/2560x1080 with 165Hz and 244Hz displays vs small middle group at 2560x1440 120Hz/144Hz vs everyone else that's moving on to 4k.

I'm curious how many actually fit into each market (resolution)?

As gamer that targets 244Hz with lower resolutions, yet with ultra settings maxed - I've found that my Titan Xp often does as well, or even better (again at these low res high frame settings) than my RTX 2080 Ti - Also surprisingly enough in certain games the RX Vega 64 (I run the Liquid version) is very strong, even more consistent than either nVidia at these low res ultra settings.

My opinion, RTX 2080 series is card designed around those looking at 4k (not lower res), and I have to wonder with all the problems circling the train around failures if it should have been held back and built on 7nm platform, and maybe then heat would be less of issue and slight boost to performance could benefit ray tracing.

I'd love to see those resources used to ray trace put towards old fashion non-ray traced graphics and see where the frame rates go from there, perhaps even the low res frame rates would be a noticeable improvement over 10 series.
