Red Dead Redemption 2 Rakes in $725 Million Worldwide in Three Days

... the biggest opening weekend in entertainment history. The highly anticipated video game title generated over $725 million worldwide retail sell-through within its first 3 days. It is the second-highest grossing entertainment launch of all time next to Grand Theft Auto V which achieved $1 billion retail sell-through in 3 days.
HTH is 725 > 1000?

There several PS4 exclusive out now and more comming in the months to come. Stop Bing closed minded.
I've got a huge backlog of PC games on Steam, GOG, etc. to keep me going for several years. By the time I get around to owning another console, I'll be an old man or possibly be dead.

wait.. how hasnt piracy ruined the sales of this game too??

Well it's console only for now, so trying to crowbar in some ironic point about "piracy not really mattering" is barking up the wrong tree here. Current consoles have copy protection obviously, but nobody questions or decries it like the entitled drama queens on PC.

I think PC piracy was absolutely *one* of the factors in their analytics and ultimate business decision to stagger the PC release, just like GTA5, which clearly worked for them. Reason being, a same-day PC version would bleed sales from console copies, and piracy would in turn bleed sales from the PC version. All the PC players buying the console version right now (raises hand) would not be doing so if PC version was already out.

We may not like it, but I can't blame them. This is a multi billion dollar game, and delaying the PC release will net extra hundreds of millions.

Read the quote again: "Second highest... next to GTA V"

No, actually it says RDR is the biggest opening weekend ever, 2nd only to GTA .. If it's 2nd to anything then by definition it's NOT the biggest ever.

No big deal, just a typo but I got a laugh out of it lol.

Aww, how cute. So many borderline retarded console Gamers all getting together over lowest common denominator titles designed for people of their intellect.

They can keep this third person garbage. I don't want it.
Despite all the mickey mouse bravado and posturing here, I would lay money that you'd actually like RDR2. The quality of the writing and voice acting alone are maybe the new high watermark for the industry, and the protagonist is hilarious because he tries not to be.

The reality is that Rockstar did NOT design this title for the A.D.D., goldfish attention span crowd - that's why you'll hear complaints about "the beginning was boring", "the first part is too slow". R* had enough confidence in their art to construct their story to unfold gradually rather than shoot you out of a cannon immediately.

In any case, I think it says a lot that Rockstar puts out games that people would even consider buying twice. The opening felt like the Hateful Eight.

I was a strict PC gamer for years and been lurking in these forums for over a decade but I finally had to admit spending 2K building a rig for ever lower amount of games on the platform was becoming harder and harder to justify.

Got a PS4 pro and love the games available and more than likely will get a PS5. PC gaming is not worth the investment (to me) right now.

Nice to see that, always like when a SP game sells like this, but i'm not gonna buy a console for single game. If it comes then great news. The last GTA game that i completed the story was Vice City, so that's a while (and i own the other one LOL)

Not a typo. In the article it places an asterisk and says:

*Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on a Friday so that its ‘opening weekend’ (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) is the same as its first three days, while Grand Theft Auto V launched on a Tuesday.

But I'm like you and others. Sounds like it is the second biggest launch instead of the first. I guess they were going by the weekend thing.

Its all marketing bullshit...just like the cover of COSMO, PEOPLE, TABLOIDS...all to catch your attention and then divulge the truth deep into the article in a way that if you glance through it you may not catch it.

I feel the need to correct you here. The scripts and voice acting of the Rockstar Games titles has been truly above the standard established by most every other game maker out there. The stories are good and fit within the timeline/genre that they are targeting. IF this game is on par with others it will feel like a true gritty western. That is what they are going for.

Again I fail to see how calling one of the better productions in gaming historically something targeting the lowest common denominator because... it's 3rd person? Really?

Go back to your CS-GO please. Some of us have moved past the need to play twitch games.

Well,

I'll try to keep an open mind, but I've been doing this a long time, and my experience is that games designed for the console tend to be designed in a way that is less intellectually stimulating.

Everything from overly simplified and streamlined controls, to simpler puzzles and less complex and more childish story lines, less interesting plot twists, and dumber dialogue. It's as if console players are less mentally capable than those on PC and they design the games for their audience, those with IQ's under 90.

I guess there could always be an exception, I'll try to keep an open mind.

Back when the PC games market started shifting towards multi-platform co-development, and console first, port to PC later, I could immediately tell when a title wasn't a PC First title, and I hated it.

Sadly PC exclusives are relatively rare these days, so almost everything gets a little bit of the "console dumb down" effect.

I haven't owned a console since my 8-bit Nintendo in the 80's, and I can guarantee that over my dead body will there ever be a console in any house where I live.

And no, I don't play CSGO.

I understand the contention, as I've been in that situation for a few years myself when I was younger, however I feel it is overblown. No one is holding a gun to their heads, anyone can walk away and find something else. Happens everywhere, every day.
Well, the point is, you said "take your time" as though that's somehow the reason for the success behind this. 100 hours a week is not taking your time, that by definition, means you're not allocating enough time for what you're trying to do.

This game looks great and may be the first one to get me back in gaming after 5 year break (had 2 kids). I don't have a console but I'm assuming the xbox x is the way to go? I'm not looking for a debate and don't care which brand, but I only would buy one. I just imagine the more powerful one makes sense?

PS4Pro RDR2 bundle for $399 is way to go IMO. Both consoles do 1080p60 fluidly, and neither can do better than 30FPS at 4K. XboneX is not going to be a significant difference outside of Digital Foundry splitting hairs in magnified screenshots. The big, meaningful leap in graphics quality won't be until it gets to PC.

PS4 has a ton of other exclusives (GoW, Spiderman, TLOU, etc) whereas Xbox is a bit lacking in firstparty by most metrics.

This hurts me right in the feel zone because I also have enough of a backlog to last 3 apocalypses. Damn I hope the power is still on after those, guess I should have thought of that :( . Does Amazon sell underground fuel tanks?

Fun and games aside (har har), thumbs up to Rockstar for giving the middle fingers to EA's endless loot box grind. A single player game with a story, narrative, etc? Wow.

That being said, I suck at and generally do not like open world games. I only made it about 3 hours into the last Red Dead (360 I think) before I gave up. Go here do this, talk to that guy, go there do that. Borderlands 2 is the only open world game I can remember finishing and enjoying. I liked GTA as a concept, and I've bought plenty of them, but I gave up on 5 because of the tedium etc. I have a real job, I don't need to do busy work in a video game.

So while this game may be a technological marvel, and not saying I won't play it at some point down the road, I know in my heart it's not for me.

Metacritic score of 97, that's insane. User scores aren't as high, but most of the negative feedback seems to be the pace of the game (riding around on horseback) or the PC users skweeling (guilty here also).

I don't like all RockStar products, but I am impressed by their determination to dance to their own tune. I was fascinated by L.A. Noire. I connected with that game, I don't know why, because I really don't care for any of the GTA games (I've only played GTA on the PC, and even though I bought an X Box controller I just couldn't get the hang of driving the cars).

This sucks, because I'm not excited about Fallout 76, RDR2 isn't available for PC, and Fallout New California isn't doing it for me. I'm feeling peckish - I don't want to play the games I have because there are other games that I want to play that I can't.

P.S. Just checked for Red Dead Redemption 2 on Steam. Not there yet, I'll probably check back again in a few hours ....

P.P.S. I am teh paffetic.

I'm a PC gamer from day one. Got a 4k setup and had a 1080ti. Sold it to buy a 2080ti and whilst waiting for stock, borrowed a mates PS4 and played GOW. Loved it.

So, I went out on the weekend and bought a One X and RD2 bundle. Loving it.

Now that I have a kid I'm seeing the convenience of couch gaming. Also RD2 looks incredible.
not a console owner but I use the Steam Link to accomplish the same thing. Couch Lego Star Wars is pretty fun.

More on topic, also waiting for PC release. Learned my lesson not to buy a console after the 360, barely touched the thing.

I understand you want more ZORK and MYST level of puzzles in games. I appreciate that. There is a market for it...

For ME, and aparrently millions of others, I would say that Rockstar has time and time again fit the game to the market. It's like you are a character in a movie with the plot of that movie.. be it... gangland violence, hard bitten mafia, or most recently, elite criminals a la oceans 11, the feel has been perfectly on the money.

I would say think about the other GTA and Red Dead titles if you ever gave them a chance.. (If not Pick up a couple of the GTA's for PC on the cheap) you will find that they fit what they are going for quite well. Just don't go in playing a game about a New York Immigrant finding himself tied to the Mafia then be pissed because it doesn't have xyz modern weapon or future thing. It's more about the story.

That was why I gave the dig about CS-GO. I'm a 44 year old gamer. I play on PC, yet have a PS4 (for Rockband.. I'm addicted.). It's a plot-less game-play only focused game.

I'm gonna buy me a PS4 Pro with RDR2 bundle for Christmas. I feel waiting for Christmas will bring back those kids days excitement.

Work and Myst may not be exactly what I had in mind, but I wouldn't be opposed to something at that level.

I'm thinking more along the lines of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series and Red Orchestra.

Some console codevelopment/port projects do work for me, but they are rare. The Deus Ex prequels despite being codeveloped for consoles actually turned out to be amazing. They didn't let the "design for console" mentality drag them down too much.

Same with the modern 3D Fallout series (3, NV and 4). Despite the console link, they still turned out to be great games.

I also wasn't too disappointed in Prey that came out last year. But these are by far the exception rather than the norm.

I've never been impressed by anything Rockstar has released, so I wasn't expecting much here either.

Well I wouldn't say it raked that in in 3 days, I'd say it combines all the pre-orders into the opening "weekend" sales, and to be honest Rockstar has a track record of putting out good games, GTA5 smashed records because they haven't disappointed in the past so people are willing to pre-order without any exclusive weapon only available to preorders (although that may have been the case too).

Feel sorry for all those gamers though using a controller to aim... K&M4L!

Meh, it is really semantics as the two are not mutually exclusive. But I do see and understand your point.
