While some benchmarks seem to be under some kind of NDA, initial impressions for RED's ambitious Hydrogen One smartphone are out. Generally speaking, reviewers are praising the phone's tank-like build and the dual camera setup, but the 3D "holographic" LCD display is a mixed bag. All of that is soured by the phone's rather outdated Snapdragon 835, a $1300 starting price and the lack of any of the promised modular camera attachments at launch. While phones should already be shipping to some, those who want to order though AT&T or Verizon can do so on November 2.

We cannot advise buying a $1,300 phone that is full of bugs and is missing key differentiators. RED could very well fix a lot of the bugs we saw with the promised software updates coming on or around launch. But 3D, 4-view, or whatever you want to call it, is a weak gimmick that should have been left in 2012, and the thing we expect from a RED phone-a truly epic video camera-simply isn't here. I see a vision in this phone. It's the vision of a go-anywhere, pro-quality connected movie camera that effortlessly captures massive files and uploads them easily, probably using 5G. I know RED's Jim Jannard shares this idea, because at the phone's launch he said that he wants his phone to be used as a second-unit camera on shoots. The back of the Hydrogen One says "media machine." As we use more 4K TVs and 8K displays—don't think home TVs, but think projectors and billboards and industrial signage—we're going to need more super high-resolution, super high-quality content, and those huge file sizes will drive 5G adoption. That content is going to need to be stable, bright, and in an 8K industry standard format, not in some proprietary 3D format.

I just want android to create phones that compete with battery efficiencies of apple (iphone XR has 2x the battery life of any android flagship phone). Then they need to be built tough with decent cameras (my moto x4 has the camera of a 1.1 mega pixel floppy disk camera from 1999). The two pixel xl phones were junk and stopped working at 10 months each blah blah blah.

Android as an OS needs to do better. If Pixel can take great photos with their software mods then it should be standard across the platform so my moto x4 isnt shit. If they stop spying on us 24/7 then maybe the battery life would improve lol.

i get the feeling this person was expecting the camera to shoot high quality 8K video?

really.. on a phone??

Thats like 1000 USD more than i will ever pay for a phone, and 300 USD are actually a lot factoring in my intense hatred for those devises.
BUT ! i do think when my dear old mother are dead and i therefore dont have a reason to carry a phone, then i probably make a AP in my car and get a nice tablet.

I get 5 days on a charge on my android phone, ,,,,, of course not cuz it is some super phone or battery, i just use it that little.
If you cant get a day out of any phone, then,,,,, im sorry, but IMO you are sick.

Right? I don't even think it's possible to take 8k images or videos in high quality without a much larger lense.

Pixel size and sensitivity. Most phones aren't using back illuminated cmos yet so they have a bit to go. The pixel size is the main issue though, needs a lot of light to overcome. Sensitivity can only do so much.
My V10 does 4k and it needs a lot of light, otherwise you may as well just shoot 1080, it'll come out a little clearer. It must interpolate a larger block of pixels to simulate a larger pixel, a good way to do things. Some other cameras use similar methods to film HDR by reading each pixel pair in a bayer block in sequence.

But yes the limit is optics and why the smaller pixel size is beneficial for phones.

Crazy lol, I just upgraded to a pixel XL for $200 and I'm tickled pink with it. Call it old age starting to set in but I just don't see the real improvements in phones like there use to be and see zero reason to upgrade till your old phone stops working, and even then can't justify paying more than $300-$400 for one.

Sure camera improvements are nice but if I'm that dead concerned with picture quality I'll save all that extra cash and buy a good camera for when I need that quality photo on a hike or my kids sporting event.

So wait.

This $1300 phone, made by the leading cinema camera company in the world... has a basic, average video recording quality? I would expect this thing to absolutely destroy other devices. It has the bulk required for larger sensors, it has the godamn price to justify it...

A phone from RED should have a camera that makes people go "Holy crap! I've never seen anything this good!" not "eh its alright in comparison..."

Bingo.

I think they should've waited until one or two of those swappable camera add-ons were ready. Launch impressions are supremely important, and an "average" camera on a $1300 RED phone is just unacceptable, even if it can take 3D shots.

I remember getting a Nexus5X on BlackFriday (right around when the 5X was first launched) for $299. The reviews indicated it was a solid phone - but $300 was at the top end of what I wanted to pay. Still, it was a good deal, so I took the plunge.

How the hell did we go from that to $1295???

Yep. Phones are completely stagnant. The pixel 1 and he'll even 6P is still solid phones. These 1k+ phones are ridiculous and pointless.

Courage.

Fuck, for that price, it had better suck my dick. I paid $220 for my Moto G6 and it does everything I need a phone to do. I have had the phone for 4 months and have yet to even take one picture with it so I could give exactly 0 fucks about a camera on any phone (I haven't taken any photos on any device (including a regular camera) in so long, I can't remember the last time I took a photo).

Half the point of the phone is that is can be used as a viewfinder on a real camera. A $50k camera.

I want a phone which is focused, first, on being on a phone. Great reception, good ergonomics, loudspeaker so I can hear in crowded/loud environments, microphone which filters out extraneous sound.

Second, the phone should link, via Bluetooth, with crisp sound quality to cars.

Third, it should be "smart", but not use any of the corporate tracking or adware or spyware on me, my location, or my activities.

Fourth, and a distant fourth, let it have some camera properties.

that's dream world thinking, *snaps fingers* welcome back to reality.. ;)

It's almost like high end cameras are large for a reason..... I'm unsurprised by this.

For me camera comes first
Most phones suck at this part.

And first impression go a long way. Think of the Essential phone...premium price tag at the time and a god awful camera setup
They took too long to improve it also

Its a $1,300 phone sold by a camera company with all sorts of marketing for its camera, and "3D" screen that any normal person knew was going to be BS, reviews are showing that the screen is just that, a gimmick.

The phone was delayed over and over, has HW from last year, runs 8.1 because they said their 3D software requires lots of coding, aka they are never going to update the phone and you will probably be stuck on the old OS version for the short life of the phone.

Last but not least, the only thing you really need to see to know the phone is a flop is the photo below, Red phone on top, Pixel 3 on the bottom:

If that picture is legit it's the saddest thing I've seen in a while.

So, I wanted to talk to my sister who lives in another state. I grabbed my wife's digital SLR. I mean, why wouldn't I try to use a camera to make a call?

Oh, wait...

Is the 3d screen more advanced than say my old HTC Evo 3d? While it was kind of cool, nothing really took advantage of it and I think 3d outside of VR has really faded away since ~2011. I think $1300 is hard sell for outdated specs and a gimmick that's already been done.

I just got a lumia 950 brand new for $140 to replace my broken moto x2. It takes great photos. I dont really give a fuck about phones beyond looking things up, taking the occasional photo, texting and making calls though.
