Tesla Rolls Out "Navigate on Autopilot" Feature

Tesla has released what the company is calling its most advanced Autopilot feature ever, Navigate on Autopilot, which combines navigational functions with autopilot to set vehicles free from strict, predetermined paths. While some level of driver supervision is still required, the feature can guide “a car from a highway’s on-ramp to off-ramp, including suggesting and making lane changes, navigating highway interchanges, and taking exits.”

While initially the feature will require drivers to confirm lane changes using the turn stalk before the car moves into an adjacent lane, future versions of Navigate on Autopilot will allow customers to waive the confirmation requirement if they choose to. In both of these scenarios, until truly driverless cars are validated and approved by regulators, drivers are responsible for and must remain in control of their car at all times.

I am glad i will be dead before the human equation are totally removed from driving, not that i think it is a bad thing, its either this or more people should have their license revoked.
But by way of current culture and movements in society, having cars drive them self are probably the only solution to the many deaths in traffic every year.
On the other hand this intermediate period, i am sure more will have to pay the ultimate price for the survivors and their children to prosper.

We had the greatest generation, now to nominate the worst generation.
 
Don't worry Oldmodder, the time of humanity is coming to an end. Soon the world will belong to man-machine hybrids, or just humans will go extinct and machines will take over. Culture wars won't matter when Being itself can be changed at the individual level.

Very likely. It's not something that I consider enthusiastically, as I loathe the loss of freedom, but requiring self-driving cars on highways will go a very long way.

Yeah, so many idiots out there whether it's the person who "how the hell did you even pass a driving test" to Mr. 28 point turn to "Hey lets race in and out of traffic because it's fun!" and those licenses aren't going away any time soon. IMO the scariest moments will be the transitional time when auto-drive and people drive are both on the roads at the same time, because you know people will try to fuck with auto-drive cars it's just our nature as retards with opposable thumbs, and I really hope measures are taken to transition, like only auto-drive on freeways perhaps physical barriers between auto-drive/self drive cars, city streets a little less scary because of slower speeds but man... people running out in the middle of the street for no apparent reason other than "fuck cars, me comes first" (ask Uber what it thinks of those people)

PS. Disagree on that whole "greatest generation" nonsense, my were from that generation and while I won't say they were horrible nothing about them was really that "great" compared to any other generation either before or after.
 
IMO, this is already a fail by telling the human they really aren't needed but legally required to be ready to take over at a moments notice. We don't work that way. "I have to pay attention in case the car wants to change lanes." 4 minutes of boredom pass. "Oh, look at the pretty butterflies.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"
 
In 10 years to world will be very different. At that time I will be 63 and still on my 2014 1800. 3.41 sec 0-60 Honda Valkyrie. I wonder if I will be surrounded by self driving cars, and maybe even a few self driving Bikes!

I don't understand why we always have to conflate all this other stuff, like self driving tech and stypid touch screen controls with electric vehicles.

I don't want any of that.

I don't want anything my 18 year old Volvo wagon can't do, other than not use gasoline.

Forget all this other garbage.

Look at the cost of other electrics, a Tesla 3 wouldn’t cost much less without this tech, so be happy you can get it with the cars at the current prices. Most of the cost is in the batteries, not the sensors and software which run Autopilot.
 
Wow.

No doubt this is all familiar to those following robocars and/or Tesla, but I haven't been and so am extremely impressed. It's one thing (and not simple) to get this working on a test track, but worlds beyond that to have it operating on streets and available to the public. Elon Musk is one hell of a technologist, has some damned good engineers, and I wish him the best of luck in changing our world.

All an LEO will need to do is push a button or radio in and your car will lock it's doors and pull over, similar to OnStar's Stolen Vehicle Slowdown feature.
And with the advent of precog predrive, your vehicle won't move if it detects an illegal activity is being thought about.

That's pretty interesting. But a non-real-world test case. The self-parking test case.

In the real urban street parking battle world the self-parking car would be over-matched by ruthless biped waterbags. The biped drivers would notice the auto-parker is occupant-free and steal the slow, methodical bot-parker's spot every time. My grandmother could parallel park faster than that demo - with only minimal collateral damage. Usually.

What happens after xx attempts and the batteries are dead? It just stops on the street. Gets towed. You finish your daily business and wait by the curb. And wait for your car. From your smartyphone, you keep summoning your self-parking car to pick you up, but it's not responding.... so you hail an uber-cab and go to the yard to bail your autonomous car out of jail. Complicated. ;-)
