Help finding a 27", 2560 x 1440 monitor with the best black levels.

I've been looking for an excuse to replace my old HP IPS secondary monitor that I use for watching Netflix and whatnot while I'm messing around on the PC. Seeing as the 2080 Ti doesn't have a DVI output (I know I can buy and HDMI to DVI cable), I figure now's the perfect time.

My main monitor is an Asus PG279Q so I'd like the secondary monitor I pick up to have the same size and resolution (27" and 2560 x 1440).

I don't need a high refresh rate, but excellent black levels are a MUST. I'm pretty fed up with the IPS glow most monitors have when watching dark video, so it's gonna have to be a TN or VA (where the hell are the 27" OLEDs when you need them?!)... Preferably VA, but those seem few and far between and I have zero experience with them.

Any suggestions?
 
VA has its own issues, it's just a matter of what you can live with. That aside, I don't think there's a single non-curved 27" 1440p VA display on the market. Even then the only one I can think of off-hand is the Viotek GN27D which I think uses a Samsung panel but i'm out of my depth here so i'd recommend doing your own research on it. If you want to go up to 32" then you've got a few more options.

I was looking for something very similar nearly a year ago and it doesn't seem like anything has changed regarding the available offerings.

You know what... After doing some reading, it looks like the wonkiness I experience (stuttering video on the second monitor while gaming), is caused by the different refresh rates and not the different resolutions like I suspected.

I'm going to read a bit more, but if that's the case, there's no reason I can't drop down to a 27", 1920 x 1080 display. I'll just have to find one with a 144hz - 165hz refresh rate.

Also... Are you speaking of the ghosting when you talk about VA issues?
 
Yes, that as well as issues with smearing / black crush, font rendering, ( ex. ) gamma shift, and a few other things that were more of a problem on some displays than others. And again this isn't to say that IPS (or TN) are without problems too, but you're basically trading one set of issues for a different set of issues that may be emphasized or de-emphasized depending on how you use the monitor.

In the end you'll have to decide for yourself, but good research and multiple viewpoints go a long way I think. If 1080p works then you've got a few more options but i'm reasonably sure that all of the 27" 1080p 144hz VA displays are curved. Again, that may or may not be an issue for you.

I think it would be worth it to take note of the drop in pixel density as well if you're going to 1080p at that size, depending on how close you sit.
 
Right here baby, best 27" 1440p 144Hz VA gaming monitor you can buy for less then $400 and it's a VA panel for best contrast and blacks. The only negatives are the stand is fixed but it does tilt and the screen is curved, I've had the monitor for a few days and I really like it. With tax I got it for $354 at Microcenter. But Amazon does carry it. It does not have G-sync or the AMD's version of it, but still at $319 it's the best buy. I'm replaying Doom on it and it's amazing. I actually bought the Predator XB271HU and returned it due to contrast and blacks not good enough and that dam IPS glow. Plus the C27JG50 is half the price of the Predator. I don't care if the was the same price I would still by the C27JG50. On the box it says gaming monitor all over it, this by far is my favorite monitor I've had so far. I'm still testing it. No ghosting what so ever so far. I did find one very small hiccup with it so far which I'm making a topic on it to ask others. By the way it does not come with a DP cable also this monitor has only been on the market for a few weeks.

I was also checking out a couple of MSI's offerings. Since I found out the issue I'm having is with non-matching monitor framerates and not the resolution, I think I can safely drop down to a 1920 x 1080 screen and save a little money. This monitor will only be used to watch Hulu/Netflix/Amazon Prime and occasionally look up strategies and whatnot for games so I don't think I'd be gaining much by bumping up to 2560 x 1440.

The first one is the MSI Optix MAG271C which is a 27", subtly curved, 1920 x 1080 VA panel with a 144Mhz refresh rate. I can pick it up for $260.

And the second is the MSI Optix MAG27CQ which is the same monitor, just 2560 x 1440 and with a red LED. I can pick that one up for $360.

Looks like both the Samsung and MSI 2560 x 1440 are using the same Samsung LSM270DP01... But the MSI apparently has FreeSync (meaningless to me). The stand on the MSI has height adjustment and swivels though. I'm not sure if I would be ok with the curvature.

Sorry I haven't back to you quickly. I definitely wouldn't get a 27" at 1080p been there done that, PPI is too low, avoid like the plague in my opinion.

Secondly I actully owned the MSI Optix MAG27CQ and it had problems, had weird lines sometimes down the screen, there were other quirky things about it too but it's been a few months. QC just wasn't there. Yes the stand does have more movement but it's actually quite limited.

I think your best bet is the Samsung I already mentioned to you, I've had it now for almost three weeks and it's the greatest monitor I've ever owned so far. It has what so is hard to find in one package. 1440p VA @144Hz plus it also has the option for 120HZ,100Hz too, great contrast and great blacks for $319 at Micro-center.
