Six Years Later, Star Citizen Is Still Raking It In

What a fucking ripoff of a game. Is 2948 the release date, seems optimistic at this point.

'2948' release , and if the funds continue to roll in at the same rate as they have been the total budget for making the game would be a shade under 32 Billion dollars ($32,000,000,000)

By the time this game comes out GPUs won’t be able to run it anymore. ;)

The true believers with $20k ships will be searching ebay for “vintage” computer parts so they can look at their ships in the hanger...
Bwahaha!

Fuck this conversation until the game is six years late?

What happens in 2020? Alpha 4.0 is set to be released?
That was the drop dead date a few people gave me for their allegiance to the game.

I’d love to see it out tomorrow but I don’t preorder games. Not even RDR2. I’ll pay cash for a finished product that I can take home/download in PC games case.

I was interested in this game when I read about. I have backed a lot of games - no real regrets on the ones I picked so far. One of my favorite games I backed was Wasteland - awesome game. I also backed Star Control - but haven't had time to play it.
Most of the time, it's $25 for a game. I like to back ones by developers I've liked in the past. So, not sure why I did not back this one. I did like the Wing Commander games back in the day.
Anyway, sit back and watch the show I guess.

I have a sneaky feeling that by the time the thing comes out, no one will really give a shite any more. Over promise and under deliver.....

one theory that makes sense to me:

all the money they raised is actually from chris roberts who keeps buying ships off of the transactions of himself buying more ships

People have spent hundreds and even thousands of dollars on microtransaction games on facebook and iphone/android. Fool, money, yada yada. At this point I'm not sure I'll care anymore if it does get released, though I'd like a run through Squadron 42 before I retire in... ahh, I'm never going to be able to retire, too many ships to buy. :D (I bought 1 SC ship a loooong time ago)

This game is branded like a cult/religion. Of course it’ll keep on making money from followers.

The hate towards this game is more branded as the cult/religion if you ask me. I see a few staunch supporters here and there but most who enjoy SC just play the alpha, keep an eye on updates, try them out, etc. I see only the haters and non-supporters that act as if they're losing something from a game that isn't finished and "Scam Citizen" a good 99.9% of the time.

Even on the sub-Reddit for the game it's hardly some cum-fest. People are enjoying what's being released and making the most out of the alpha while new stuff comes out as per schedule (mostly, of course). Considering stuff like Lorville is about out and that performance is getting better, there's more and more stuff to actually play, I'd say we're getting definitely closer to I think what the developers want.

It's why I don't reply or defend the game in these threads. I have friends who develop software and considering all this game is trying to do none of them see any real issues with how it's coming along, it's development time, etc. It always just seems to be the foamy mouth know-it-all's that know nothing that seem to think a game like this that started from nothing should be "finished" by now a mere 6 years later despite all the changes that have happened. 6 man team to 500. Who cares? A few hundred thousand to hundreds of millions? Who cares. Technology to make a game like this possible that didn't exist? Who gives a shit!

No one ever seems to actually look at the scope and features and game play changes that came along with the more they could accomplish. Games like GTA 5 with already in place dev teams, talent, management, money, technology, etc took 8 years LOL! Can we at least give CIG the same 8 years before judging? Can we at least give a company that started from nothing the same time frame for their game that we give a massive corporation for a much smaller game?

It's why I stay out of these discussions... simply because I don't personally get all the hate. Not because I'm some fanboy or some Roberts dick sucking cuck...it's because this is a massive game with massive ambitions that are being shown to the public CONSTANTLY (some scam) and this shit TAKES TIME. So you want to think it's a scam because the largest game ever doing stuff no other game has ever done before that started with NOTHING isn't done in 6 years? Cool, makes no sense to me. Carry on.

Edit: Funny but really shows what a scam looks like and the sort of tech they develop from their scam money for their scam game. Because THIS SHIT is what scammers do, spend time making awesome shit NO OTHER GAME HAS EVER DONE. Scam Citizen #confirmed

I agree with Mutiny. What I see is a developer coming up with creative ways to keep the doors open and push development along. The problem he has is balancing the creation of ships versus the development of the base universe. It is possible, that if he did not have to be creative with new ships and implement them he might be done by now. I understand why he is doing this and it is my hope that he is able to balance on the knifes edge without failing. That he can still keep money coming in and push the real development along.

If you compare charts for each year they are way below every other year. Every citizencon has been a dumpster fire with 200mill burning in it. This one was no exception and now he's moving towards releasing a minimum value tech demo release. We have dev saying he saw a demo in 2010, Chris and a small team worked a year before the ks and they are only 24% complete as of today. No worries the whales seem to loose complete logic over fidelity.

My post was two sentences.

The problem he has is balancing the creation of ships versus the development of the base universe.

They are though. They have different teams doing different things. You can't sell planets and features so you sell the things people use, really. The actual game part and game world are still massively being worked on by others.

The whole post wasn't just towards you or about the single point you made, obviously.

I’m not about shitting on anyone personally but objectively, this game, from an outsider’s view with no money spent on it, is the butt of a joke. It’s hard to imagine that people believe in this product.

The developers spend too much time producing dev diary videos and hosting yearly conventions. You know those types of resources would be better suited towards actual game development. It’s a joke.

Make a game then hype it. Don’t hype promise and underdeliver with prospects of a better tomorrow.

I'd love to see this data. Sauce?

The difference is that they were open and showed development from the get go and not after the game had been developed for a number of years. If they came out next year with the announcement of this game and showed everything that would be done by then, etc people would be blown the fuck away. But, because people have been able to follow this since day one there's a stigma around it that...I don't even know...the game should magically be done by now somehow?

Open development has certainly hurt them due to peoples lack of knowledge on the subject of game development but outside that I really fail to see what's actually a scam. Only thing I've seen from randoms is that they sell ships? That you aren't forced to buy. That are offered to people that understand they're funding the game in part of their purchase (that's how buying things works...to support the company making them). I don't really see the scam there either..

Release notes, press releases, and interval revisions to the game are all that is needed for them to be open about development.

I’ve seen their videos. They are over produced mini-documentaries. Whether those are outsourced or produced internally they are paying people, unnecessarily, to produce that type of content. Same goes for hosting a convention.

Being open about development can be sliced many ways. SC seems to be going about it in a way that lets people know that they are getting far too much money than they know what to do with. Like someone who isn’t used to having money that can’t fathom the idea of saving and has to buy big TVs or a new car. It’s wasteful. And if this is crowdfunded how can backers or funders not feel slighted?.

They're already doing all of this plus more. What's wrong with more information and showing people clips and interviews of what they're doing at the same time? It's what people want, it's what they want, and they're delivering.

I don't actually see anything wrong here other than you trying to just be negative honestly. Who cares if they have like a two man team to document all this. It's not like the 5 minute interviews with developers somehow halts game development or something? They choose to be open about development like this and how they're choosing to do it in no way invalidates or lessens what they're developing as you seem to want to make it out. As for the conventions it's another way to secure more funding and show off some cool shit. If it becomes unprofitable they'll probably stop or do something else.

Calling it a scam and saying it's all a fraud is far from feeling slighted because they're spending some money on showing what's going on behind the scenes. It's a part of the budget that's obviously been accounted for and would be far from bringing the whole operation and development to the ground.

Either way, think what you want, I for one appreciate the updates and featurettes and like seeing all the new...NEW...stuff they're working on and making constantly. People certainly aren't calling the game a scam due to them spending money on video updates lol...the same people should probably watch them and educate themselves on the matters of game development and what is actually going on with the game so they'll get over the ridiculous "scam" idea..

Differing opinions and views and all that.

There is only one way to judge a project with infinite scope change . . . . that it is not seriously or effectively managed. Whatever else it is . . . is open to interpretation.

Eh, ambitious and crazy scope creep / change. I will believe it when I see it in full functioning form with live players.

All games do indeed take time especially massively multiplayer ones like this. Camelot Unchained has been in development for 6 years and just entered BETA. Marc Jacobs put in 5 million of his own money to fund this game.

I've never understood the hype behind this game. Space flight sims are a niche within a niche. I'd pay for something like Pioneer Space Sim with fancy graphics and a story, but buying ships and crap for a vaguely defined space trading MMO that's several years late already seems silly.

Space trading/dogfighting isn't even all that fun tbh. I've spent an order of magnitude more time in Kerbal Space Program than games like Pioneer or Evochron.

Roberts really should just be getting out on parole for his scheming with Andreas Schmid. Its really mind boggling that so many people can so easily be taken in... on the promise of a space shooter.

Unlike the investors that where duped into his previous schemes. Who in many cases got chunks of their money back. No one is getting their donations to Roberts back... and when he at some point manages to find a sucker purchaser for Cloud Imp. He'll do what he did even before the film industry scams, he'll claim the game is almost done and dump it on some poor sucker. Possibly there isn't likely anyone as stupid as MS around this time to sucker... and hey at the rate people continue to throw money at him he might just be able to keep this scam going for years yet.

Sorry...but this game should have been released ages ago...then they could crowd fund to make all the additional changes as they went along
This is in perpetual development, its just crazy.
"What if we had...PURPLE trees, quick make and announcement and get some more money in"
I backed it at the start and after over 2 years of seeing fuck all useful dev, I got my money back.

I liked Wing Commander and Starflight when I was growing up but thankfully I wasn't born mentally disabled and thus avoided getting fleeced. The people dropping thousands of dollars on this crap are the same type of people who support shitty DLC and micro-transactions with their wallet.

That's why many of us who aren't financial supporters of Star Citizen are so vocally opposed to it, instead of ignoring it and "just not playing it" as its supporters insist we do. As with the proliferation of micro-transactions, a scam like this made possible by people with more money than sense will have negative consequences for the whole gaming industry and community, not just the game's backers.

Fuck this conversation until 2020. Which is getting close.

If we go by the recent timeline of Alpha 3.60 due the middle of next year then 2020 would get you Alpha 3.7x or 3.8x. Good luck with that. And I don't mean that sarcastically.

I was a day one backer and tossed hundreds at this game....not so much for the game, but what the trailer symbolized; a big "fuck you" to consoles and the EA douchbags, a high-five to PC gamers, and getting back to the roots of gaming...
At the time, it was leading to a new console generation and everything was a port. There was talk about PC gaming being dead, etc. At the time, as a PC gamer, I felt abandoned, and then Roberts came out and said everything I wanted to hear. We were going to be a part of something great.
I bought in and walked away. I wasnt going to keep ontop of updates, i was just waiting for it to come out. Every few years I would check the thread and news.

I got my refund over a year ago. I dont know where they went wrong, or if they dreamed too big, but somewhere things went sideways. Now it seems like the entire business is selling ships for a game that will never be done. I have no doubt that everyone still invested will be taken with nothing in return. I think the people who are still in are people buying tickets for a ship thats sinking.

I think the biggest travesty is all this time and money and the game doesn't look like fun. The single player may be, what with scripted events and missions, but the mission shown in the demonstration looks like typical randomly generated A>B quest that Elite Dangerous already has. They're putting all this stuff in like that stupid train and a bar where you can click on your drink and who cares? Who is going to want to ride that train more than once? Have a drink at the bar more than once? All of that shit is pointless and a waste of time and resources.

The last couple of people hit the nail on the head. The game is just not fun at all. Its not what I invested into in 2012 and is in no way something that brings back fond memories of Wing Commander. Microsoft fired Chris Roberts for a reason and now you can what that was.

It's going to be so thrilling to load up the released game and "start fresh" with everyone else...and then feel like you've joined EVE 15 years late because CiG sold everyone their ships pre-launch.

They've already fundamentally compromised the integrity of the multiplayer game and normalized the fact with their fan base. They could very easily continue selling ships (and whatever else) after release.

Chris Roberts has some amazing vision and ideas. The problem is that Chris Roberts needs to be corralled a bit by other co-creators. When he has full reign to do whatever he wants, you see what happens.
