While numerous commenters have reported conflicting results, How-To Geek is alleging that Bing is a filthy search engine that regularly “suggests racist terms and shows horrifying images,” and will even “suggest you search for exploited children if you have SafeSearch disabled.” Microsoft has taken the complaint seriously and fixed some of the offensive suggestions, although plenty supposedly remain.

Since publication, Microsoft has been working on cleaning up the offensive Bing suggestions that we mentioned. Based on our research, there are still many other offensive suggestions that have not yet been fixed, including a few that we’ve mentioned below. We are unsure if they are simply fixing the offensive items we pointed out, or if they are improving the algorithm.

And here I preferred the less censorship I get when I tell Bing to not censor things and can decide for my own adult self which results I want to open.
In the Google car, turning the traction control off doesn't really turn it off. I don't want Bing to be identical.

Agreed. Although I generally avoid microsoft like the plague, I may have to give bing a second look.

I'm all about not censoring things. I am also ALL about not having exploited children. If they can eliminate that shit from appearing, even as a search term, then I say go for it.

I mean, there's porn everywhere. Illegal shit doesn't need to be. That's how I feel about it.

I'm using DuckDuckGo now myself, and it's usually adequate.
Sometimes, though, I go to Bing, and it finds things DDG did not.
The price of free and private, I guess.

Illegal where, though? Internationally that's just crazy talk: between China and the Middle East, probably everything's illegal somewhere. But even domestically, what's illegal varies state-by-state.

Exploited children. All 50 states and territories, as far as I'm aware. If not, it should be. I'm not talking about some century-old statute on sodomy.

Exploited children. [illegal in all states]
But news reporting and commentary about exploited children shouldn't be, right?
And they probably shouldn't be bowdlerized either. If you want to fight evil, you can't sugar-coat it.
So how does a search engine draw the line?

sounds like bullshit for the porn related terms.

but 'evil jews'? it is a common term used by half the world when referring to them. Well , no surprise there if you consider news about their motives and actions are actually, well in the news in the non-american world.

what they want is a sanitized american-centric search engine, where nothing controversial is available. Kinda like a sanitized FB. Uggh.

It's gonna be weird once software gets so complex that the developers cannot figure out to fix problems like this.

The best way to fix problems like this is to go back to dumb search engines...but the world will never go for that.

Aren't the suggestions based on search terms used most often by others? And yes, I'm saying the world is mostly terrible people.
Or maybe just the programmers who wrote Bing.
If Bing is great for porn searching, then that line of thinking would probably be spot on.

Microsoft has no fucking clue how to do search. One just needs to see how fucking useless Windows 10 searching is compared to previous versions. Microsoft is only embarrassed when it becomes a big enough problem. They take no fucking pride in their quality any more.

Do people really think these suggestion come from bing... likes its it own entity with its own opinion rather than just a glorified database of what OTHER PEOPLE have searched for?

This is like closing the curtain when somebody is being raped outside because rape is bad and now i cant see it...
Turn of the TV now there is no bad things happening in the world anymore.

Yeah, because whatever doesn't come up in a search engine doesn't exist. So it doesn't matter that children get exploited, what matters is that snowflakes are safe from having to face reality.

It should ALL be available but people just have to turn on the ability to see it all... Oh wait that's how it already was.

I've used bing quite a bit with safe search off. Not once have I seen anything about exploited children.

Bing is actually pretty good. I no longer even use google. You also get points for searching using bing. No other search engine gives me amazon gift cards.

I try it again every now and then, and then it just doesn't give me anything useful at all, so I leave.

Giving me free gifts to use a search engine, what a joke. If that's your metric for a search engine, then we have different priorities. Mine is actually finding what I want fast, not getting a handie.

Uh, it's not the job of a search engine to deem something offensive or not. This leads to censorship. Bings biggest problem is that it's just not as good as Google or DuckDuckGo.

It finds everything I search for. The gift cards are a nice bonus.

Wasn't there a project from MS which featured an AI bot which ended up pretty much at the same place saying stupid stuff. At least now we know that the programming skills are to blame :)

Tay, like most 'AI' is just too honest for the rest of the world ;)

That's actually hilarious. MS has had some questionable suggestions for awhile. For example; when I made my X-box Live account the name suggestion they had for me was "Stiff Buffalo". I lol'd and adopted the name, courtesy of MS.

"My Bing-a-ling,
My Bing-a-ling,
Won't you play with
My Bing-a-ling"

I refrain from using Bing due to search returning results other than what I'm looking for. Same with DDG. Reading the allegations in the article only reaffirms my choice.

If all i ever found was what I was looking for, then I might never find anything interesting. That said, being able to find what you are looking for is helpful...I just think Google tries too hard.

This is to justify putting filters in place. Ensuring the filters are controlled by a far-left gatekeeping ideologue comes next.
