i recently upgraded my phone and I have a 6 plus sitting here.

My kids (3 and 5) have really old iPads. Cracked screens, out of memory, battery life is degrading, you get the idea.

I’d like to give them my old phone to use in place of an iPad. No SIM, just WiFi. Financially it makes sense, since the phone isn’t worth much and getting another iPad is more expensive. They don’t care about the size, they only watch it briefly.

How would I put that on my iTunes account?

I’ve always had my one computer synced to one iPhone and one iPad.

Would I make another account? A kids account and go from there?

How would you do it?
 
What you're looking for is called Family Sharing. You basically create an account for your kids and share your stuff to it. It works in iOS 8+, OS X Yosemite +, and iTunes 12+. There's a feature built in called "Ask to Buy" where your kids can't go about willy-nilly making purchases on your account. You can share Apple Music, iCloud, etc. It's also useful for pinging the iPhone when the kids can't find it. With the latest iOS, you can even set up screen time so the kids can't be watching movies at 3AM, or where they only get an hour a day or something like that. It's a pretty slick setup that works well in my experience.

Just a thought, if money is tight and you need a lot of bang for the buck..... Look at the 7, 8 and 20" Amazon Fire Tablets. They are Hella value for the money, and I believe they have awesome parental controls.

I have the 10" Fire that I use as my, um, "Library" tablet. I can't believe it was only $149 for what it does.

The smaller one's are well under $100.
 
I forgot. The kids love the Osmo learning toy. So I need an Apple iPad.

What’s the oldest one that can get iOS 12?
 
Looking at prices, a current model is $309 (educational pricing) and its fully supported. I’ll probably go that route.

For which, iPad 2018? Or is that for a 2017 or a Mini 4? I find it really hard to recommend a Mini at this point. I love the form factor, but the chip is long in the tooth and for some reason it costs as much as a regular sized one which has a processor generation 3 years newer.
If it's for an iPad 2018, I'd say it's a pretty good deal. If you find you want to use it yourself as well, it also has Pencil support which I think is the killer reason to get that model/year above previous generations.

EDIT: I checked the wiki link and it specified that exact education price for the 2018. I'd say go for it.
