What game(s) will never die?

There is still a pretty large group of players that still play Street Fighter 2 competitively. Obviously Counter-Strike is still really popular, but it isn't quite as old.

Clearly there are people still playing classic games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Frogger, etc. but I always wonder how big that scene is. Is it like Billy Mitchell and a few dozen others or are there really a lot of people seriously still playing those games?

Still play Tetris DS (my favorite version) fairl often. My best is 560 lines in marathon mode. :D

Have you played it? Because it’s actually pretty good.
yes, all throughout beta, took a break from it cause wasn't happy, they made promises on some things, purchased it about a month or two ago.... refunded immediately..., it is not quake..... its overwatch skinned...

While I will freely admit it's not Quake (as in Quake 1) and is somewhat a departure from Q3A as well, it is definitely NOT anything to do with Overwatch. I actually stopped playing it for a bit as well, because I wanted to wait until some of the features I want get into it. They've been making some good progress over the last couple of months with the most recent updates. I'd say they've almost got a good game there. Sure there's a bit of unnecessary fluff, but it's not bad overall.

The thing is, if they made exactly the kind of Quake that all of us want, there'd only be a relative handful of people buying it in this day and age unfortunately. I think they'd done a decent job of making a Quake game that has a few modern game touches to interest more people. (sure, none of that matters to you or me) but I can see why they did this how they did.

I just hope they make it easy for people to set up their own games exactly the way they want them. They're getting closer to that.

All games will eventually die; in fact eventually all things will die. Just the way it is with games and life.

ArmA series seems like it'll be around a long time in some form or another.

There's still a pretty large contingent of people playing golden age coin ops (the Billy Mitchell types), and many of those games are rapidly approaching 40 years old.
It'll be interesting to see if anything from the 2nd arcade era (late 80's, early 90's) or early LAN-based PC era can hold on that long.

Zelda (Franchise started 1986)
Metal Gear (1987)
Street Fighter (1987)
Final Fantasy (1987) -- Someone needs to explain to me how this "Final" Fantasy is somehow never final...
Madden (1988)
Civilization (1991)
Starcraft (1998)

Just to name a few...

Because they are mostly stand alone games, not sequels is the best answer I can come up with.

My guess is Eve online. The uniqueness of this game, oh man. I can't think of another game where I'd be this satisfied to find certain things like for instance large skill injectors, where after weeks of gathering the eve isk I'd finally be able to afford things that change the situation for me so dramatically..
idk it just feels really rewarding in there. All these special things like eve plex, just buy isk cheap the upgrading mechanics and the game mechanics in general... so addicting. I just wish they somehow made it so that people couldnt buy eve isk for real money, cause it is really not fair and i do not like it.
Just because I or someone doesn't have money to afford skill injectors it doesn't mean someone who has should be able to get every advantage just off that.
It is quite unbelievable how games nowadays provoke us to buy stuff for real money where there's literally no reason to do so - you're just hurting your ability to have fun and gather things and achieeve things by yourself.

Heh, those are franchises.

And? That is part of why they will never die, they will continually keep being remade because people continually want to play them...

Franchises != games though. I mean I can name off 100s of franshises that will "never die" which had games in them that were terrible. Even the ones listed in the franchise list above had bad games that definitely didn't do well.

You are splitting hairs. Franchises are based off of games and these particular franchises have gone on for so long because the games in them were good. Plus plenty of these franchises have had single games that have lasted a long time.

Just imagine The Sims 48....Won't have to make a sim, you'll be able to go into the Holodeck and BE the Sim...:wideyed:
