RPG Game Suggestion For Girlfriend

That'd be a good idea, I'll see what she thinks. I think she's just really into the story aspect of games more than the...gameplay aspect. She likes watching movies/shows/reading, so I think it sort of fulfills that aspect. I think if she got more comfortable over time with controls, she'd dive deeper into games.

I'm not really trying to derail the thread or get into this sort of argument, especially since there're a whole lot of factors in play, but to me it's got a lot of RPG mechanics like leveling up your heart containers (sure, not an exp. point system, but close enough) and gear upgrades (more so the latest installment). I think I'd lean more towards action-adventure, but it contains some RPG elements, therefore I just haphazardly called it an RPG.
Final Fantasy X is a nice looking turn based RPG that is pretty simple. Actually, many PS2 RPGs are suitable.

Wife played no no kuni 1 and 2, and now she's playing Earthbound on the SNES classic. Simple mechanic RPG's work best with "sim" players for easing into genre. Zelda BOTW was a bit too much for her once the enemies required some good hand eye coordination and timed combinations/counters to dispatch them.

Funnily enough I never considered Zelda for an RPG, for me they are adventure games, there is no char building in Zelda other then getting more hearts. on a even more sidenote, shame there was never a sequel to landstalker on the Megadrive/genesis which was a nice Zelda clone waaaay back in the day.

The Legend of Zelda series is the very definition of the action-adventure genre, but that term gets thrown around too liberally these days.

Yeah, if you go looking for Action Adventure, you're going to find a lot of things that you might not be looking for. I'd call the Zelda games RPG-Lite by today's standards. Sure, you're not wading through specs and huge trees worth of character progressions, but you are very much participating in a functioning game world, interacting with tons of characters, advancing branching plot lines and side-quests, collecting a pretty massive inventory, acquiring weapons and tools, etc. You can interact with the game world to a good extent, (even more-so than some pretty heavy RPGs in some ways). While I wouldn't classify them RPG if we want to go the purist route using classic genre labels, I would wholeheartedly include them under RPG under normal conversational circumstances, and especially in border cases like this, where someone that isn't heavily into games wants to get a lite-ish start in the larger world of role playing games. They are a bit action heavy, but then so are a lot of other RPGs. (cough-Souls-cough)

Chrono Trigger

EXCELLENT recommendation. It's got a slight learning curve, but once you settle into it, it's pretty much perfect. It's got fun characters, a touch of humor, an engrossing world with cool locations, and music that keeps the atmosphere just right. It's got plenty of depth and strategy, but is also easy to pick up. My daughters have all thoroughly enjoyed it.

..... why are we even talking about this? lol

Kingdom Hearts.

The "HD 1.5 Remix" version on PS3/4 isn't bad looking... not sure she'd consider an SNES or PS1 game good looking though...

Kingdom Hearts was originally on PS2, but the remasters are quite serviceable.

Not going to read this whole thread, so sorry if it's been mentioned already.

I got the wife into Legend of zelda. She loved the 3DS one (link between worlds). I got a switch and played Breath of the Wild...after beating it, got her to play it...she fucking LOVED that game. BotW is NOT a casual game at all either, but she went in and 100% that game (before I did). Since then it's opened up her to other RPGs....her current thing is Skyrim, though she just steals shit and has her modded companions (some sexy female fatal) do all the work while she loots.

A man of culture I see.

"RPG mechanics" is the "Dark Souls of" of genre descriptions. Everybody started adding it to game descriptions around the time the PlayStation 2 came out. What are believed to be RPG mechanics does not an RPG game make.

I think everyone here knows what an RPG is. We can choose to include some games on the fringes though especially within the context of this thread.

Now, if you want to get really hardcore, I highly recommend introducing all lady-friends, wives, etc. to Caves of Qud. :p Now that's an RPG. I've enjoyed the hell out of it.

***Disclaimer #1*** Don't do what I just said, or you might not have those same lady-friends, wives, etc. :D

***Disclaimer #2*** Do give it a try sometime though if you're into old style RPGs.

Also, RPG Mechanics works fine in some situations. Borderlands for example. It's a shooter at its core, but everything else about the game is RPG. Skill progression, character advancement, world interaction, NPCs, quests, side-quests, experience system (actually one of the more complex ones in recent years with all perks broken out).

Also, if we want to get right down to it, I've seen no argument against Mass Effect's inclusion here. That's kind of an Action Adventure game too really with some RPG Mechanics. :D

Skyrim is a good choice for someone who isn't a "hardcore" gamer. My SO got really into Skyrim after having played The Sims a lot previously. I tried to get her into Fallout but she doesn't really like shooting combat as much as melee.

With the Hearthfire DLC you get that Sims-like building capability.

Yeah Skyrim is pretty good for this sort of "introductory" or "transitional" player. At least within the Western style of modern RPG. Personally though... I prefer to go full Star Wars Baddy, and lightning the hell out of everything. :D

Not RPG in the purest form, but the latest 2 Assassin's Creed games, Origins and Odyssey are fairly good looking adventure games.

My wife started out the same way, played several sim games and didn’t enjoy games with too old / poor looking graphics. Borderlands co-op was what got her interested more into rpg-lite games and shooters. Since then she’s played:

Diablo 3
Van Helsing 1/2
Torchlight 2
Borderlands (all of them including dlcs)
Far Cry 5
Orcs Must Die 2
Left For Dead 2
Vermintide
Destiny 2

All of these games are easy to learn and can be played co-op if you guys enjoy that.

Can never go wrong with World of Warcraft =p
too old IMO, graphics don't look good... same with a lot of these recommendations... yea chrono trigger is a good game but I'm guessing someone new to games will think it looks bad... if OP said "she doesn't mind pixel art" then yea...

Ladies seem to love Borderlands. I've noticed this quite a bit. I've got a few T-shirts with some weapon-maker logos on them (a Maliwan shirt, Hyperion shirt, etc.) yes... I'm a nerd... A lot of women have noticed the shirts though and commented. More-so than men. Though there was this one ultra-nerdy fellow that said "fuck you for wearing that" (in a somewhat joking manner I guess) when I was wearing the Hyperion shirt. :D More men comment on my Quake "Q" logo shirt though.

Since Dragon Age Inquisition is more of an advanced RPG, I'd say Mass Effect 2, then Mass Effect 3 with character stat upload if she's liking the series.
