Microsoft Pulls Windows 10 October 2018 Update after Reports of Mass File Deletion

I have minute by minute backups of my main drive, but I'm wondering if had the ability to hit network drives, aka my NAS. Looking for what might be lost is like a needle in a haystack.

More disclosure is needed here.

You know what would fix this issue for MS forever more....

A /home part... that its OS doesn't touch. lol

Sounds like bad management to push an inadequately tested update. The nightmare would have gotten worse if they didn't pull the update though. My windows 10 pro got hosed from the last major update behind this one so I never got to try this one.

i'm still on 1709 because 1803 won't install for me.

There's testing with different hardware configurations and then there's testing for shit like this. This shit is stupid shit, the kind of shit that someone needs to be fired for as a message to the next ten generation of Microsoft employees that some mistakes come with a very high price.
I'm sure they'll fire the guy in India responsible for this, to hire another guy in India who knows even less. This is Microsoft being cheap with their development, not one guy who fucked up.

take it you never had a Kernel panic
Nope, I never seen one and my HTPC runs 24/7 for years now. I've seen other problems like graphic driver issues, but not a kernel panic.

Windows 10, An O.S. that literally data mines every metric of data input you can think of, gives Microsoft the legal rights to download ALL of my files (pictures, videos, documents, emails, private messages, financial records, ANYTHING & EVERYTHING), markets and sells my data to anyone willing to pay for it, shares my information with federal and local law enforcement "at Microsoft's discretion", undoes and breaks end user efforts to stop / limit telemetry through constant "undocumented" changes in routine patches / security fixes, and now in it's latest build deletes my files (a bug Microsoft knew about for MONTHS prior to releasing 1809)!

If this does not disturb you deeply, enough to "at least" install a Linux distro and ONLY boot into Windows 10 for apps / games that will not run in Linux on your personal PC's just how much more insidious / Orwellian / inept must Microsoft become for you to reconsider?.

Microsoft might as well reclassify itself as a division of the NSA/CIA. Open Source O.S. is the only way out of this Orwellian shit show and it's time for those of us in the I.T. industry (who know better) to push back hard. Microsoft cannot be reasoned with, disgust and outrage are "acceptable" so long as you just continue to use / support/ purchase Windows 10. Microsoft will never change it's ways unless we as a community force them to. A mass movement to Linux is a good start...

I upgraded my work desktop and laptop without an issue. I did have a few customers bring in PC's complaining about the disk cleanup at install option with 1809. This is why you never do anyone a favor. :ROFLMAO:

This actually happened to me. The 1809 upgrade deleted all the contents of "C:\Users\jyi786\Documents"...but it had literally zero effect on me, since my actual Documents directory is on a completely separate drive. :D

The only way I discovered this happened is that when I opened Outlook, one of my email accounts wouldn't load because it said its PST was missing. Outlook by default places PSTs in the Documents\Outlook directory. No biggie, I just restored the email account.

Either way, this is a massive screwup on part of Microsoft. They keep actively finding ways to screw up with Windows 10. And I don't mean half-heartedly, it's like they are going full-bore on "what new way can we f*** this up".

Random removing of NIC's and programs before, wonder if this is a random extension of that "bug" somehow

I installed it on my main pc two days ago.
used the windows 10 upgrade software.
No issues on my install.

Must be some odd user folder thing MS just forgot to include in this build, Not instilling confidence in public with these kinds of screw ups.

Nah, probably more to do with a bug in the redirected user folders too One Drive. Just a guess though.

Didn’t have any folders go missing.

But it did **** my intel chip Bluetooth driver, for which I had to redownload and uninstall/reinstall the driver (same version) to get working again.

Every time Microsoft cock something up I mentally repeat the current year date with incredulity: 2018 and they still can’t deploy a non-borked update. Multinational conglomeration, talent focused aggregation, deliverable commiseration.

nothing should ever be kept on the Desktop!!!! The desktop is NOT a storage or operating area. Good god people STOP being frigging lazy and use the OS correctly. I am sick to death of people whinging and carrying on worse than a 2cent watch when it is your bad computer usage to blame 100% for your data losses.

When backups are done in general the Desktop is NEVER backed up in these backups, it is skipped (MS Backup is not an option for backups neither) hence all those documents you have saved on the desktop are gone for good when you screw up your computer. If you are so lazy, create shortcuts ONLY on the desktop to your documents.

You need to use specifically designed backup software such as Macrium Backup Free (not afilliated with Macrium but the software actually works as designed!!!) where you can customise it to some degree (free's are feature restricted to some degree).

FFS.. while I am at it STOP bashing Windows, Microsoft and QNAP for your lazy failures also, you are to blame and no one else. Also, Linux and iOS are not all that good neither, one reason iOS doesn't have as many issues is it isn't updated that often, less updates = less issues (in theory) one large update = one massive load of issues (again in theory).

Before update installation begins, how many people do computer maintenance weekly? How many people check their registry? How many people clean out their caches? Do some maintenance before you install updates and you may just find the updates install perfectly fine.

I understand this is deletion of documents issue within itself, regardless, use your computer and OS correctly.

If you don't know how to do computer maintenance, contact me, I can do it via remote access for a fee.

Rant finished

That's funny, I just updated my iMac to macOS Mojave without backing up anything and guess what? I didn't lose anything. I also run beta ios on an iphone and haven't lost anything, and i get weekly updates, typically.

And that is fantastic to see the devs, doing a decent job with their coding as well you no doubt know what you are doing (to run beta releases) and perhaps do do this maintenance. As I said was a Rant by me.. too much coffee, too much back pain and too little sleep = Grump Me I guess

nothing should ever be kept on the Desktop!!!! The desktop is NOT a storage or operating area.
At a job nearly two decades past, a user asked for another monitor because his desktop was out of space. User stored literally everything on desktop, refused to use the easily accessible (and highly redundant and backed up) file share issued to each user. User had already consumed two desktops worth of space on 23" CRTs (1856×1392, old Mitsubishi screens), having scammed the second monitor out of my predecessor. Shortly after that ticket was opened (for "running out of space") user was fired after my assessment of the system found ... things not on the approved list at work.

As far as Apple, most recently one of the High Sierra updates was getting systems stuck in recovery mode. An older update, can't recall which one, changed partition numbers, thus destroying Boot Camp installations. Several of the x.0 releases have had either significant negative effects on hardware (marking previously good batteries as bad, killing NVRAM, etc.) or have left systems in unbootable states, requiring recovery installs or full wipes. This most recent flub by MS is nothing more than the latest example of industry wide laziness in terms of using the paying end user as the QA group.

As far as MS products are concerned, I'm actually surprised this level of bug hasn't happened more often given the extreme variance in terms of end user hardware and software setups that Windows is expected to handle.

TL;DR: doesn't matter what you run, have an offline backup.

LOL I'd have sent off to a computer for beginners course, after that with his request and 'out of room' on his monitors I would have sacked him on the second monitor request.

I have read and heard a fair bit about Apple's software and hardware issues, especially this year.

I completely agree as you said the many variants of hardware that the Windows OS is demanded to operate on can not be simple to make it all work 100% of the time. Perhaps people and manufacturers with cheap and nasty hardware need to realise and stop manufacturing and purchasing these useless nasty items in the first instances. If manufacturers want Windows OS then the hardware must meet an absolute minimum requirements and MS are to blame in this as well for wanting the OS on as many devices as possible.

Re offline backups, and have another two backups for that data elsewhere.

What a joke operating system. Like, we Fucking pay for it and they delete your documents?

I have never, ever, heard of, or seen, an update to Linux come even close to this fucking absurdity that is Windows 10.

Btw I'm re recording and editing my Overwatch Linux video to try and release the final version of it right now ;)

It'll be nice when they finally come out with some specifics about this. I count myself as lucky since after about a dozen installs, 2 personal, around 10 at work on some ancient vanilla HP rigs and none of this stuff. On the work rigs I noticed increased latency in connecting to the network but nothing else so far.

Last night at home I went to play SOTTR and noticed it did uninstall my NV 399.24 drivers on my 1080SLI rig. I decided to try the 416.16 since 1809 was installed and SOTTR crashed on every startup. I also noticed that 416.16 disabled SLI and had to manually reactivate. Eventually reinstalled 399.24 and all was fine with that rig again. So far this is the only rig I've seen this behavior with 1809. I have to say that when ever MS does a build update around the same time NV is rolling significant driver changes out it becomes a double whammy of WTF. I remember when the creators came out and suddenly my 4k/10bit/and HDR stuff got all out of whack. Took almost six months before they played nice with each other again. I had to keep installing 378.24 or some such. I also remember having to research to turn off MS from auto-updating those drivers then.

I know this is crossing threads but take it as a heads up for those who did update to 1809 that the 4xx NV drivers may have issues with some Pascals. 399.24/1809 combo does seem to be stable though. Both my 1080SLI and 1080TI rigs are using this combo with no issues and full functionality.

edit: Did some searching a couple of days after this post. The issue, and not limited to any specific games or number of features, is WDDM 2.5. Seems to be a recurring problem since that's what I was dealing with back when creators came out too.

Well they did get the os for free, might as well have them find some bugs in exchange...
I paid hard cash for a copy of Windows 10 Pro. Never did the 'free" upgrade. And still have to put up with all the spyware and adware and locked-up settings. Perhaps for the "free" version some of this might be acceptable (which I doubt) but I spent money to buy a copy--perhaps I am the idiot for doing so.

I dont know if its luck or what but I have had basically zero problems with Windows 10. Every one of these updates have always gone smoothly for the most part. I dont like how they are done, Im certainly not a fan of drivers being installed or updated without my consent. I have no use for the garbage apps or Edge, the start menu blows so I use Start 10. I do have this latest update and as far as I can tell I have no problems. All my files are there, and regardless they are backed up in the cloud and on USB stick. That being said, I really wish MS would forget about this Windows as a service crap, they are not Apple and not Google. Stick to making solid operating systems like Windows 7, XP and other stuff like Office. They are trying to be so many things that they are not. In some ways I really miss the days of Windows 95 and 98, simpler times minus the bullshit.

Anyone notice the quality of Microsoft over the years started suffering after they cut their American Employees in favor of offshore?

Well, not that it was needed, but this is more confirmation that disabling Windows Update is the only sane way to run Windows 10.

Disable it, and then run it at a time of your choosing well after major updates have been out for a while. Every major Windows 10 update brings new nightmares.

Ten different ways to disable Windows Update in Windows 10

For people that didn't practice control over their system's updating and already updated and lost their files, Microsoft is suggesting people contact their support who can help try to recover the files:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4464619/windows-10-update-history

My guess is that Microsoft support is merely going to use data recovery tools that anyone could download, and which can recover files on the condition that the space they occupied on a storage drive hasn't already be re-written with new data.

They fired all those people now their customers are the QA people

Yup. It seems that if there's one thing Microsoft hates, aside from their customers, it's quality assurance.

August 2014: Why did Microsoft lay off 'Programmatic testers'?

July 2014: Satya Nadella Is Cutting 5,500 Microsoft Employees, Too, With Windows Hit The Hardest

January 2017: About 700 Microsoft employees will be laid off next week, sources say

July 2017: Microsoft plans thousands of job cuts in a sales staff overhaul to fuel cloud growth

January 2018: Microsoft makes a new round of layoffs across multiple business units

March 2017: Microsoft claims 10 million ‘fans’ help it test Windows 10, but it’s sure got a funny definition of that word

The data deletion bug was reported by Insider Feedback 3 months ago, and Microsoft ignored it.

This is AI at it finest. They were probably looking at the number of reports and shrugged it off. This is what happens when you don't have a person who realizes this is a showstopper and a release can't go out with bugs like that.

Fortunately, I upgraded 2 PCs (mine and my parent's) without problems.

Why is this a major problem, it's so easy to fix.

Windows Update, under no circumstance, shall have access to read or write anything in the users directory. No permissions shall be given, from this day forth, to this process and it's dependencies.

The End.
