Apple Wants $9 Billion from Google to Keep Its Search as the Default on iOS

Apple’s price for keeping Google as the default search engine for iOS was $3 billion last year, but demands are going way up for 2018: according to Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall, the asking price is being tripled to $9 billion. Hall predicts that amount will increase even further in 2019, to $12 billion.

It's unclear if Google's supplanting Microsoft as the default search provider for Siri and Spotlight last year is responsible for the purported price hike from Apple, though it may, at least partially, explain the sudden jump. The other explanation could be that previous estimates of the value of the agreement between the two tech giants were undervalued, given that apart from the $1 billion figure from 2014, we don't really have any hard evidence pertaining to the actual sum of these payments.

This is one of those situations where both should lose

fuck that why would google ever pay that shit, you already know people will set their default search to google anyways..

But a lot wouldn't. So it becomes a profit analysis problem but it's hard to imagine that the loss to Google would be worth that asking price.

Oh well, if the roles were reversed, this would be going down just the same. So yea, they can kill each other as far as I am concerned.

never used any apple device before( yes i am proud of it too ), cant you just select any search engine as your personal search provider like in windows?

Yeah you can, however think about how dumb the average Windows and Andoid user is....an average apple user is orders of magnitude dumberererer. "Because it just works".

And it will. They could go with whatever and it would be good enough.

As it stands, Google is overrated. There are too many interests at stake on a single search you make, so most of the time you get better results anywhere else. Yes, even Bing.

I don’t get the or else. Id have to see what the revenue margins are for Google from Apple devices for any of this to make any sense. I doubt its that much a year. If Safari defaulted to any other search and it wasn’t correctable, I’d install Chrome for ios and delete Safari with a jailbreak.

Google had $110 billion in revenue for 2017, mostly from selling ads and getting referral link money. Even if only 20% of the ad views and revenue were from iOS devices, $9 billion is a deal for them to generate 20% of their revenue.

Call their bluff and tell them to sod off... they'll reverse pretty damn quickly after their customers make their frustration known.

Edit: wait, no... no they won't. Forgot this is Apple. They'll tell their customers they're wrong...

Being pretty much an Apple Fanboi (we own everything Apple). Fuck Apple. If I was Google, I would flip Apple off and say "good luck with that".

Lol. Was about to say Apple fan boys don't care. They believe and do what ever apple tells them.

Google probably has about 10 billion down the back of the board room couches so not a big deal. :p

I don't think you quite understand the power of metadata alone, that's worth hundreds of billions. If you look at Facebook for example, the litany of information you could extract from 2.23 billion users is invaluable to marketers, governments, historians, medicine, universities, scientists, and other corporations. And the best part /s is they don't even produce or manufacture anything, it's all about data on humans brings, that's the name of the game hermano.

To emphasize this point , I just listened to an evolutionary psychologist bluntly say he would quit his tenureship to work for Facebook simply because having access to the user data would be so much more lucrative and insightful alone because it's easier and faster to draw conclusions in studies when you have that kind of data. It was an eye opener for me to hear him say that.

Revenue is not equal to net profit though. It's easy to look at the 110 and assume that 9 (and 20% benefit assumption) is nominal, but alphabet/Google/whatever the hell they call themselves isnt generating income based solely off this. Plus we wont ever know the true expenses of any department due to clever accounting... been there done that. Seems more like apple is coming in far too high using leverage to start negotiations.

I guess when you can't make a decent product this is how you have to make money.

Google search has always been good for tech search, but is it me or has non-tech related searches been getting worse?

The only thing i find Google better at is shopping, online or off.. everything else is very similar.

Can you imagine doing a web search anywhere else other than Google? /shudder ... I can't.

You end up with results for anything other than what youre looking for haha.

Apple needs to make their own search.

I hate how google puts their “amp” web address sometimes when trying to read other websites.
It makes it shitty to try to send my wife articles and links because it often times breaks it when texting.

This alone makes me want to use something else.

Apple should buy duckduckgo and just be done with it.

when you can't innovate anymore you ask for protection money.

what else are they going to do? use bing?

They innovate more than Samsung these days. FaceID 3D is unlike anything any other company has. 3d touch, a real edge to edge screen (even with the stupid notch, and of course everyone started to copy), First smart watch with an ECG built into it, They made the first 7nm cpu that out performs the whole competition.

I took a single picture with some one else fruit phone 3 years ago, my hands still feel dirty.

if I were Google, I would be like "Hey Apple, instead how about you go F yourself"

"You want our search as the "default provider" how about you pay us this amount, otherwise, go blow a goat for bus fare"

"it should not be too hard to scrounge up the dollars from couch cushions based on the asking price of your newest models when other "non flagships" have far better overall feature set then you all have. They also do not lock everything down to be ONLY your store front or refusal to fix simple issues without paying through the nose for problems that were known before they are even launched"

"ya bunch of tools, THIS IS GOOGLE!" ^.^

I hate Apple so very, very much. Its a shit company with even shittier business practices.

At least they don't use your information and share it. Apple protects our privacy unlike Google.
