1080p gamer on a 4K TV 120hz currently on an 8700 and gtx 1080. It's a small Alienware Aurora due to space available in my room and a great price I got on it.

Anyway enough justifying my pre-built lol

Would it be worth $300 getting a 1080ti and trading my 1080. It saves me from having to sell it but I'm just not sure the upgrade is worth 300 bucks. My 1080 is a reference MSI. Temps are great and overclocks quite nicely. I'd probably get a little more selling it myself but that's just more work for what I'm not sure is a worthwhile venture.

Yes, I was using a 1080ti on a Sony 43" tv @4k and it's nice in some titles.
No, if the games give an FPS advantage in multiplayer then 1440 is a better idea.
This goes for someone using a gaming monitor as well.

What Gideon said. Not worth at all unless you are looking to play at 4K. 1080P would be almost throwing $300 away.

In your use case? No not worth it at all at 1080p. Also the aurora isn't a very big chassis if you've got something in there that's working really well, just leave it the heck alone. :)

Lol thanks all really appreciate the advice.

I'm going to stick with the 1080 and try and be content for once. :)

Get a 1440p gsync monitor not sure of the size of your tv but gsync supported since Maxwell is realty nice when it works.

You know I've been really thinking about that. I have a 120 hz gsync 1070 MSI laptop, the TV is just a standard 120 hertz no gsync. I have my desktop hooked to the TV but I have been thinking about switching it out to a desk with a standard monitor type setup. I currently have the desktop in the TV in a rather small room and after some extended gaming sessions it gets pretty warm in there so I'd also have the added benefit of putting a desk in a larger open area for better temps

I do like the Alienware 25"g-sync monitor because it matches my aurora r7 tower which I happen to really like but at five hundred bucks I wonder if I'm better off looking elsewhere for a decently priced 1440p display. I think I'm ok with 120hz. At 43 my eyes see that as insanely fast lol

I think at 144hz I'd be back looking at the 1080ti?

Actually looking more at the Alieny 25" that's 240hz. :/

My current TV is a vizio 65" p65-c1

Gtx1080 is not doing as efficient a workload at 1080p as it would be at 1440p+.

You can be totally fine with the 1070 @ 1080p, it'll be the new budget GPU recommendation for a gen or 2.

I haven't used a monitor for gaming since gsync/freesync was in pre-release. Why do for guys turn off frame locking when they play?

I switched from a 1080p/144hz panel to a 1440p/165hz panel and that change left me feeling disappointed with my GTX 1080. It just couldn't drive the frames at the rates I was accustomed to.

I switched to a 1080ti and for me it was worth it, but it would certainly have been a waste if I was still on a 1080p panel.

Well.... I went with the 1080ti. Lol. (paid 225 plus my Dell/msi 1080)

I did state I was a 1080p gamer and for the most part that's true I think I'm going to step up in some games and now that I know I definitely won't be buying a 2080 I think the ti will satisfy my upgrade craving for a while. I got a really good deal on this Alienware computer so it gave me a little wiggle room to throw some money at upgrades without breaking the bank.

I know this could be perceived performance but at 1080p stock playing Tomb Raider the TI definitely feels a little more fluid then my 1080 overclocked.

It's not just the "feels." The 1080ti is a considerable upgrade over the 1080 - to the tune of 30%. It would just have been wasted on a 1080p display. =)

Many TVs claim 120hz but they are no such thing fyi

Fairly certain this TV is. All information points that way in multiple programs, framerate as well as my own eyes lol All reviews that have tested it also confirm the refresh rate, that or everyone is just misinformed. But I can see the results when I go to 4K 60hz, it's night and day.

I could tell you more about it but I think I'm done here. Enjoy the new card

Are you saying that after selling your 1080 it will cost you $300 more for a 1080ti? If thats the case then hell no. It shouldn't cost you more than $150 for that upgrade.

It cost me 250 more and it was on a system that I didn't even pay for. So normally I would agree and still do, but for 250 I got an upgrade and didn't have to deal with selling my non branded 1080. I really just wanted a little more power under the hood but fully aware I overpaid. But again seeing how the computer was purchased for me, 250 out of my pocket for a TI was worth it to me in the end. If for no other reason but to just stop thinking about it.

I traded the 1080 that came in my Alienware plus 250 for the TI. It was local so I could instantly pick it up which to my impulsive ass is priceless :)

I see, just going by the market used 1080s go for around $350-$400 while used 1080tis go for $500-$550+

Please do. I think I'm seeing 120hz, it's a Vizio P65-C1 (120hz at 1080p). If you have info that proves otherwise I would genuinely want to know about it. I just would be surprised if it wasn't at least close to the stated 120hz that Windows and all other available metrics I have state. And again just the fact that it looks significantly smoother at 120 than anything lower.

Yeah I saw that. It saved me from having to sell and just be done with the old card. I basically looked at it like I was paying a premium for that. I'd say I overpaid by about 100 bucks but I was pretty happy that night and he gave me a free bottle of some really good vape juice lol

I hope I didn't sound too snarky in my original response to you. I understand if you don't have time but if you can point me in the right direction to really find out refresh rates it would be appreciated.

Don't beat yourself up too much. Depending upon where you could've sold that 1080... fees and shipping would have added to that delta cost. A $400 shipped price on fleabay without seller coupon would cost you ~$70 including the shipping and insurance. Net cost $220 for the 1080Ti at $550 used price. Sell for $350 shipped on forum with paypal, costs you ~$30. Net cost $230 for the 1080Ti at $550 used price.

Yeah I definitely put some value in the fact that I could just dump my old card off get the new card and be done with it all in less than an hour.

I had planned on selling it cheap myself for a quick sale so prob would have taken even a bit more of a hit.

So much green.

I'm confusing myself when dsr. Is that a way to play a higher resolution at 1080? At the very least putting my GPU to work a bit more?

It renders at a higher resolution and downscales it to your native. Very similar to SSAA. You enable in the in nVidia control panel and then in the actual game you set your resolution higher. It’ll automatically downscale it for you. But set smoothing in the nVidia control panel DSR area to less than 15% IMO. The default is pretty high.

I found some MSAA combined with DSR looks amazing. It’s a great way to use your card more if you have headroom.

Great thanks. Sounds like a cool feature. If I enable 1.5 and 2, what would be the proper resolution to set it to in game? Is there an equation I use to figure that out?

I think that’s 1.5x and twice the pixels... it should be pretty obvious in game since there will be new resolutions. The 2x should be slightly higher than 2560x1440.

Is your monitor 1080p native? Because it’s based off the native res...

Cool, I'll play with the settings when I'm home. The TV is native 4k, I usually just play 1080p. Well I did before picking up the TI.

I just realized I can set my TV to 1440p. But only at 60hz.

I haven't looked yet but hopefully I can find a display that supports 1440p at 120hz

Well it played at 1440p but not sure that's a proper resolution for a TV. The 60hz is kinda killing me tho. Not sure I'm willing to give up that sense of speed at 120h for resolution. :/

Don't play at 1440p on a 4K TV. Every 2 pixels rendered will be stretched onto 3 onscreen pixels.

There are tons of displays that support 1440p at 120Hz+ there are even 1440p ultrawides that support it.

Good to know. Yeah something didn't seem right lol

I'll check out some monitors, thanks!

Yeah DSR works at odd resolutions but don’t actually set your TV to anything but 1080p and 4k.
