Google Pixel 3

Yeah, the Pixel 2 XL wasn't the nicest looking phone but it had its own charm. But the Pixel 3 XL just proves how all the design rejects get hired at Google somehow. It's the only explanation I have for why nobody pointed out how ugly it was (and how Android is turning blinding white).

I didn't look through the whole thread, but any word on pricing? Personally I'm looking at the smaller phone. Hopefully it's not more expensive than last year (or at least too much more expensive).

Just some leaks putting the Pixel 3 at around $730 overseas somewhere. I'm betting Google bumps pricing by $50 this year to $699/$899 for the Pixel 3/3 XL respectively in the US. It will be interesting since they can't just directly copy Apple pricing this year though unless they went full retard at $750/$999, lol.

I hope they at least kill the Verizon exclusivity deal though, I don't understand how they think these phones will sell well at all if they're not available through all carriers.

Same thing as last year.

- Pixel 3 line is Verizon only in the U.S.
- Pricing to be similar to last years, not cheaper at all

Off topic a bit, but;

- The Nexus phones were never big time sellers, I think the best selling nexus was either the Motorola Nexus 6, or the Nexus 6P, and at best case it sold a total of 1.5 million phones, in the curse of it's year on sale. And that's worldwide grand total. Most of the Nexus phones were sales typically in the less than 1 million per year.

- Pixel line comes out, and yes compared to Apple and Samsung it sells like crap, but compared to the Nexus line it's doing better. I think the Pixel (2016) sold around 2 to 2.5 million phones, and the Pixel 2 line sold in the 3 to 3.5 million, still pennies compared to the iPhone and Galaxy line, but still isn't rock bottom.

My point, if Google is serious about selling phones, why do they only offer it on carrier ( Verizon ) only, and not open it up to all carriers like Apple and Samsung do ? I bet if the Pixel 3 was available on every U.S. carrier as well as the phone stores in Europe and Asia, maybe Google would sell 10 to 15 million worldwide ? And eventually get the Pixel brand name out there year after year, and grow it into something popular.

But lately I get this impression the Pixel line is like a highend nice sailboat out in the ocean with no Captain and a broken rutter. Just sort of sitting there, not going anywhere. I just hope there is a Pixel 4 next year.

I kind of wish they'd delay the phone until spring to compete with the Galaxy S if only because then you would get the newer 855 instead of the almost year old 845 SOC. I doubt there will be a tremendous difference, but Qualcomm usually improves battery life slightly year over year.

Word is the SD855 is supposed to be a pretty big jump. Way more efficient, and also a lot faster at the same time, and better memory management.

I read an article last year before the SD845 cane out, and even then they said the 855 is the one to wait for.

I hear that the 855 would be designed like an Apple A processor so that finally we'll get a Qualcomm chip that will deliver comparable performance to Apple's last gen. But I also hear that Samsung's 7nm is messed up so 855 will remain 10nm or something. I've seen much rumors about it in a while. So correct me if I'm wrong.

I used the S8 for a while after I switched off my OG Pixel, and while it wasn't a bad experience, I definitely prefer the pixel. I would rather not buy the S10 just for the SD855.

The biggest LOL will be if Google is insane enough to ask flagship $1,000 pricing for this 3 XL notch monster.

When the OnePlus 6T will be around half the price. Having similar specs and actually much better design.

How can Google justify that pricing difference between their 3 XL vs the 6T ? Waterproofing, wireless charging, and 1440p aren't worth double the freaking price.

Only way Google can save themselves, if they change the name from the Pixel 3 XL, to what it should be, the Nexus 9P, and sell it for the justified price of $599

Classic Google QA/QC means you can bet there's probably at least a few reproducible flaws. My Pixel 1 has been the "least worst" compared to the 6P/5X/5, but yeah, with the steady rise in price, Google has never justified the premium price.

If and only if I make the jump, it's probably through a mint condition listing on Swappa in 6 months. But yeah, full price is just pure insanity for Google phones - even moreso now.

Calling it now; minor improvements to the rear camera with a large focus on the improvements made to the front camera(s) to justify the notch. Will make a jab at Apple by announcing there isn’t a mandatory “beauty mode” for selfies.

Not surprising that Google used all the YouTubers videos about the Pixel 3 leaks. Pretty obvious now these massive “leaks” from the past few months were intentional to increase exposure, build hype and marketing material.

I’m guessing the “surprise” they have for tomorrow will be software related and activated in an update at launch so the leaked units didn’t have access. Some are speculating it’s a Pixel Ultra, but I have my doubts.

There was an article about a month ago (can't remember where), where someone is predicting this is a big troll by Google and the actual phones being announced will look completely different. I kind of hope that troll is real...would be quite amusing.

The XDA page for the Pixel 3 XL is a ghost town. Normally when the XDA opens up the web pages for brand new Nexus phone a few years ago there would be pretty active threads and post going on for a couple weeks prior to the release and it would be crowded with lots of comments.

But the 3 XL XDA page has no meaningful recent activity

To me that's a sign this phone won't be popular whatsoever, if even the [H]ardcore tech nerds aren't into it.

And then to ask $900 - $1,000 for this phone ? LOL good luck with that. It needs to be sold at Nexus pricing near $599 or so, if they really want to sell all the stock they'll be left and stuck with after a few months.

Doubtful, third party manufacturers have already been making cases and screen protectors for the Pixel 3/XL. If I recall correctly, these manufacturers typically receive the official specs from the phone engineers (such as those at Google) a few weeks prior to release to have cases and screen protectors ready for launch.

Spigen has their Pixel 3 cases and screen protectors already on their site for purchase and some customers already have them in hand. Pretty sure a well-known and respected third party manufacturer like Spigen wouldn’t have their products up for sale for an unknown product. There would be a lot of pissed of customers that dropped $20+ and a LOT of returns.

So those phones in the leaks are very likely what you’ll see tomorrow at the reveal. The question is if Google has a third “Ultra” device that they kept well under wraps. I doubt that is the case, but who knows.

The presentation was rather underwhelming, but I preordered a 3XL and stand. Site was hella slow, but never crashed, and didn't run into a sold out even though I changed my mind several times about insurance, taking like 20 minutes before finally ordering.
Soooo.... probably not the best start for sales.
My OG Pixel battery has started shitting the bed, so I figure it's worth checking out since I skipped last years and used to do a phone a year before they started getting so good.

Well, for the first time EVER, i am PreOrdernig a phone. My wife and both have OG Pixels (32gb) and it's time. They have been AMAZING phones, particularly with kids, so i am super stoked about the upgrades. I orderd her a standard Pixel 3, and i got the XL for the battery life. Will drop my thoughts when they come in if anyone is interested..

Same here, wife offered a pass on replacing hers though (whatevs, don't feel guilty getting another 128 and a stand now lol), we both had XLs, her 32 me 128 since winter of launch when the shortages were happening. While I had the microphone #2 or whatever failure, they've otherwise been the best phones I've owned. Its just my battery really started to take a hit after Pie came out it seems.... and you know any excuse will do :D

Yea, and it doesn't hurt that they are offering $120 for our old Pixels. They were phenomenal phones, and while it was time for an upgrade, the thought of getting a Samsung/LG/whatever with all the skinning, duplicative apps, terrible dialers, etc, was unappealing at best. Plus, considering the og Pixel's camera is still one of the best, getting another Pixel was a no-brainer.

Now, I just need to shop for cases and screen protectors...

I'm sitting on my old one for now. I always say that and keep them forever anyway. I've still got old Epics, Evos, Mx's etc that are all now worth exactly nothing lol. I just can't for 120-170$ though. It's worth it to have as a spare.

I was rather ticked that the google store only had a otterbox defender available and no commuter (plus it wasn't clear, but I think it was standard size 3 only). Otterbox site doesn't even have that.

Wow both Apple’s and Google’s conferences were underwhelming borefests this year.

And a $150 base price increase - lol for what? An SoC that will shortly be replaced by the SD855 and a flagship that still only has 4GB of RAM in 2018? A single camera that has most of its improvements simply through software? Seems like Google enjoys copying all of Apple’s poor decisions including ridiculous price increases.

I preordered the Pixel 3 (non-XL). I hate to say it, but you're not really paying for the flagship specs, but for the timely updates and security patches. The Pixel 1 was the best phone I owned over the past few years.

To be fair, the XL only saw a$50 price hike.

That said, phones are starting to get to the point where specs aren't everything. Too much else goes into it.
The og pixel I'm on has a SD821, 4gb ram. It runs everything I throw at it fine. I've never had ram issues. Much of that is because of Vanilla Android, rather than a skinned version with bloat.

As for the camera, the results speak for themselves. It's the best camera in the industry and got better from the Pixel 1 to the Pixel 2. No reason to think that will not continue.

Add in top of class updates, great customer service, and low key design...

People who buy iPhones often say frequent updates and years of support is why they pay the premium for their devices in addition to the very well integrated ecosystem. Yet people still scream overpriced for those phones...

And that still doesn’t justify a $150 base price increase. I’m honestly thinking Google knows that the regular Pixel 3 will likely sell well this time around so they took advantage and jacked the price up.

It’s a shame because I was going to buy a regular Pixel 3 as my second device to replace my Essential phone but at $799+ for a 5.5” phone with a 8 month old SoC and 4GB of RAM...lol no. I was in at $649 or maybe even $749 for a 6GB/128GB. Was also hoping the Essential phone could’ve been accepted for trade in at $150-200, but unfortunately that’s not possible. I’m going to wait for camera comparisons against the XS and potentially buy one when there will be sales.

Interesting. You are literally the only person Ive heard actually say they are shopping Android vs iOS phones. At this point, I pretty much assumed everyone had polarized into one or the other based on ecosystem.

For example, at my old job, I had to use iPhones, so I had one of each. But if I had the option, i'd have used two Android phones.

My second phone (actually third) is typically an Android to mix things up and usually I find the best bang per buck phones are Androids. I have a personal phone, a work phone (provided by my employer - usually an iPhone), and then a personal work phone (I also work as a private consultant in a separate industry).

Most recently I’ve had an iPhone XS Max (personal), iPhone 7 (work), and an Essential Phone (personal work). I’ve been contemplating getting a Pixel 3 since I travel a lot and enjoy taking photos. But the camera improvements in the iPhone XS are so good that combined along with its upcoming dual-sim capability and increased Pixel 3 cost I may just ditch using a third phone.

The kicker is that the iPhone XS update was more meaningful, since it did add more RAM, better camera hardware all around, a cutting-edge processor, more peak storage and better sound playback/recording features, amidst other smaller changes. The Pixel 3? Well, it's faster than its predecessor, has two front cameras and a larger screen... and that's about it. Don't get me wrong, I'd still love to have one, but it feels like Google was considerably more tepid.

Interesting little tidbit - Google is now charging a $35 restocking fee if you decide to return a Pixel 3. Wonder if that’s the result of last years Pixel 2 XL debacle where people were returning and rebuying the phone in hopes of getting a better display.

I returned mine after 1 day. My screen sucked.

I bought one at launch and it had bad blue shift. Tried to get used to it for the two week return period but ended up returning it on the last day.

Then I bought another one mid-November when I was still in my iPhone X’s return period as users were saying only the first batch of 2 XL’s had bad displays. Second one I got had much less blue shift, but it was still a far cry from the iPhone X’s OLED I was using so I also returned that 2 XL.

I’m hoping they got their shit together for these displays.

after I read the ram would not be getting an upgrade, I just bought the Pixel 2 instead. I've been enjoying it for the last three months, and hope to get three years out of it (like my Galaxy S4).

845 is a 20% performance bump over 835.
