Ryzen 3 2200U laptop very sluggish?

So I picked up one of those fairly cheap laptops that was on sale with a 2200U/Vega 3 and 8GB of RAM. I picked this model specifically because it states it has dual channel RAM which I know is a big deal for the APU.

I thought the slowness was the drive so I ripped out the garbage 5400rpm HDD and put in a 512GB Sandisk drive that I had spare and did a fresh install of Windows 10, but this thing is still slower than frickin Christmas.

Does anyone know where you even find drivers for this APU? The AMD site has a blank page for it and the manufacturer ones don't seem to install properly. All I know is that it takes the thing 90+ seconds just to open chrome and forget about doing anything on it like watching a video or low end games, not going to happen. Even right clicking on a blank desktop with absolutely nothing running takes it 10-15 seconds to pop up the menu.

It doesn't seem to be thermal throttling as its always in the high 30C low 40C range but it NEVER moves from 1.6ghz, the CPU should be clocked at 2.5ghz and boost to 3.4ghz. I really can't seem to dig up any info on this stuff, nobody uses these I guess? Too cheap?

Sounds like you have a genuine faulty unit, or you have borked drivers installed. APU drivers are all on Radeon.com, just search Vega.

Dang that doesn't sound right. 2500U user here. Have a 512gb 960evo and everything is as snappy as you would expect.

I can make mine idle at 1.6ghz and simple actions such as opening up chrome are as instantaneous as you'd expect without need for the CPU to boost above that 1.6ghz.

So I don't think the clockspeed is the only culprit. Though it should definitely boost when the situation calls for it! Very strange.

Even though the 2200U is a hyperthreaded dual core, I recently installed a SSD into an old 2 threaded macbook and it made a massive difference.

Was the SSD m.2 or sata via the old HDD slot?

Maybe its possible they didn't use sata3? Seems like that would be an odd choice though.

As for drivers: you can manually install any of the vega drivers. Currently have the vega 64 drivers on my 2500U as dumb as that sounds. (Have to do it via device manager). Sometimes it causes some mild issues though so I'd say procede with caution. If they areavailable you could try the Athlon 200GE drivers (2 core 4 threaded ryzen/vega apu)

Its an Acer brand A315 something, can't remember it all off the top of my head. I mean, I wasn't expecting a lot out of it, I only paid $239 on sale. But still, its slower than my 12 year old Turion X2 laptop with 2GB of RAM. I don't want miracles out of it, just decent web browsing and to run my OBDII scan software.

The SSD is a SATA drive, I don't think this has an m.2 slot. It does perform at the expected ~500MB/s speed though.

Still trying to get a display driver to work with this thing, god AMD sucks so bad sometimes. Literally the ONLY one that works is the 17.7 it shipped with. This is so ridiculous I might as well just toss it in the trash and get a low end intel laptop that actually works.

EDIT: according to AMDMatt on the AMD community site, AMD will not provide any drivers for mobile Ryzen and only the manufacturer will. Holy shit, this is absolutely retarded. So if Acer never updates past 17.7 I'm literally suck on that driver forever.

Yeah I realized that too. Its fairly common with laptops, though I feel more should be done to correct it.

How have you tried installing the newer drivers? Even though newer ones aren't officially supported, they often work unofficially.

Still makes no sense to me how it could take so long to load basic programs on it with that SSD you added.

I honestly wouldn't put up with it anymore and just try and either return/RMA/sell the darn thing

I had some more time last night and did another fresh install but this time I downloaded the drivers from the Acer site and left it offline until they were installed and now it seems to work mostly normally, thank god. The graphics drivers are still stuck on 17.7 but at least it isn't so laggy and slow. Not sure what happened to it before, Windows was borked though.

Its still a little sluggish and I'm not sure if thats normal for a laptop with an SSD or not but its definitely not unbearable like it was. Now I'm seeing the proper clock speed changes as well, and it hovers around the 2.5ghz base clock a lot more and not stuck on 1.6ghz all the time.
