The Verge Ridiculed for "How We Built a $2000 Custom Gaming PC" Video

An elitist? Bwahahahaha! He’s a college kid allegedly majoring in CompSci who can’t even build a freaking computer. What exactly does he have which allows him to be an elitist? The moron didn’t even know the difference between zip ties and tweezers.

His PC isn’t better than mine or probably almost people’s on [H], so if he’d like a free serving of humble pie, we should have him over. Maybe Kyle can interview him. Lol!

I did feel bad about the people continuing to troll him on Twitter, but not now. I wouldn’t hire that asshat to sweep up dog crap in my yard, let alone build a PC.

To be fair, I went to a pretty good engineering & CS school, and knew plenty of CS students who couldn't even figure out how to install RAM. I'm not kidding about that either.

And if half of you even saw my PC, you'd probably demand Kyle insta ban me from [H] for how terrible my cable management skills are.

The difference is (to my knowledge) you didn't make a how to video that was posted by a major company, with major errors in the build and with erroneous statements made.

All said and done, The Verge really needs to get their act together regarding examining their content before posting it, and appropriately responding when they are called out for mistakes.

I completely agree with that. His video had tons of errors, and should have been checked before put on YouTube. And how they handled it, both Verge and the kid, was completely unacceptable and unprofessional. Had they handled it differently, and just said they made a mistake, rather than blow it into a controversy, I would have sympathized with him. (And I did, until the responses came out.)

I’ve known some clueless CS majors as well, but they’re not getting hired to make how-to videos either.

Don’t worry about your cable management - I could forgive the kid for that if that was his only mistake and heck, I could forgive all his mistakes if they’d just fess up. The kid is doubling down on dumb and as someone else said, he keeps digging his hole deeper and deeper with his clearly unwarranted arrogance.

yeah the cable management isn't a real issue, everything else and the way they've handled it is.

And that twitch clip damns him even further. Pride commeth before the fall. Makes for some good laughs though. Is he really in college for a computer science degree?

So don't forget your tweezers, two tubes of thermal paste (always have lots of lube), and anti shock pads when building a computer. Most especially an elite one, with yeah that's right, a hexacore confidential intel processor!

and do not forget your live strong wireless anti-static wrist band

When I heard him say hexicore, I was like WTF that is an that 8 core processor, like everybody else says. He NEVER even said what processor model he was holding close to the camera.

And if it was given to them for free by Intel, then that explains why he didn't care about frying it.

Also every time he mentioned costs/money it was "I spent this, and I paid for that". Nope you mean your employer paid the money for all the parts.

At least he pronounced Asus properly (A Zues), so couldn't be total idiot, most non-tech people pronounce it wrong (including me for a few years).

computer science degree's don't mean shit anymore these days.. you just have to be smart enough to pass the prereq classes, you don't need to know dick about computers.. i have 4 people at work that are going to college for computer science, only 1 of them knows how to build a computer and he's also the only one that has any basic understanding of computer hardware.. the rest of them wouldn't be able to tell you the difference between a cpu or a gpu.

Was it an HEDT 8 core chip? Did he get a 9700k sample maybe? I thought I read somewhere that someone looked up the intel confidential code and it was an 8700k. I think by then I was just laughing in between face-palms. Then he brags about "yeah, thats right we have one, a hexacore...". Uh, yeah like everyone else can buy for almost a year now. Good comedy all around, he should try out for SNL.

Edit: Looks like it is a z370 board from watching the video again.

It is if you're trying to convince others to build the same or similar $2000 PC. With that kind of money it better look good inside and out when finished.

I think only you took it that way. other than looks, cable management doesn't really mean shit and isn't really a fuck up.

Back in the day with low airflow cases and flat ribbon cables, it was more important. With a giant case like that, you're right it's pretty much only about looks. But then, why bother buying a case with lots of glass windows if not to look at it?

yeah i remember the hours i spent origami-ing lde cables. I get that but its only ascetics and wouldn't hurt anything. that was my point.

Wow that's a lot of paste , like holy crap. Does he think the whole tube was supposed to go on one CPU.
He puts on thermal paste like my daughter puts on hot sauce.

Her application tends to end in deep regret and a stubborn refusal to admit her mistake or learn from it. Maybe I should have her apply for a job at Verge. ;)

If they didn't know they never should have released it in the first place. The written article, with many of the same dangerous errors, remains up and unchanged. They only took the video down, but corrected nothing.

Again, they didn't know any better. This is why the video was released. You're still assuming they should have known .... they didn't, clearly. You're trying to lay fault. And I don't blame you, there is this constant human need to do this .. to blame and fault others ... regrettably. Look, ... put your sister in front of this video. Or, someone who doesn't know a damn thing about building a PC and ask them what they thought of the video. They are going to say, "looks good to me!" ...

It's entirely plausible that no one at The Verge knew any better. I personally think this is what happened. No one was hurt, it's really not that big of a deal and everyone got their little laugh. Since I don't try and fault others or escalate situations, such as this .. it didn't phase me. I was indifferent to the video. There's an awful lot of PC builder doing a fair amount of Chest beating and peakcocking and that's fine too ... but I don't think for one minute that they should have known better. No one is going to harm themselves in this way. I mean, there's a lot of pie on their face right now. No one is going to choose to do this. That's just not logical. The better logic being, they were all idiots and no one knew any better and the video was release and they also didn't know any better to not release the video.

Have you not paid any attention to anything other than the small bit about a PC being built wrong? While that makes for a good laugh, its really not why everyone is coming down so hard on The Verge. They are being told what is wrong with the build and the risks it poses and they DO NOT CARE.

Again, they didn't know any better.

They released a guide.

They're a popular tech presence.

And not only did they seriously bork their guide- which is intended for others to follow!- they refused any and all criticism. The guide is still up.

Do you go about releasing guides for things that you don't know how to do and don't bother to research? Would you care if others followed your guide and incurred damage as a result? That's what The Verge is doing here.

Apparently Stefan did a review in the RTX 2080 and/or Ti and it was a trainwreck too, with a lot of negative comments in the article on The Verge.
