Sony Computer Entertainment has just announced the PlayStation Classic to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first PlayStation. The miniaturized version will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles and will have a $99.99 MSRP when it launches on December 3, 2018. Images of the device can be found here.

The mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation, and it emulates the original's look and feel by featuring similar controllers and packaging. Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all. All of the pre-loaded games will be playable in their original format.

I still have my original sized Playstation Classic..when we called it a Playstation...and then dropped shit bricks when we saw the glorious 20fps 3D polygonal games. Unfortunately in 2018 those are still 20fps polygonal games and there ain't nothing but fugly polygons on the PS1.

Nostalgia, sure, but who's seriously playing 320x200 poly games.....sprite games? Ok...animation, art...but PS1 games are crude beyond words.....

Strange that it doesn't come with a power supply. If it had GT1-2 I'd actually bite.

They haven't announced all of the games for it yet, but playing GT1 and GT2 is going to hindered without the dual analog or dualshock controller.

Maybe you could attach your DS4? That would be great. But I'm not optimistic. Seems more like an afterthought than a well thought out product. If it had Gran Turismo I would feature it in the center of the first announcement.

I'd rather they provide PS2 emulation for the PS4. I can already play my PS1 games on my PS3.
I still have the original PS1 phat laying around, but the PS1 was the easiest console to emulate and the most rewarding. Mainly cause the original PS1 graphics chip did like no enhancement to the image being rendered.

They need to pull a Bleem get AA and the resolution upgrade working on this system, GT2 was the best Dreamcast game ever released.

I take it this is just an emulator and not native hardware?

Also, it does come with a USB cable for power, just not the USB A to power adapter.

Thing is, PS1/N64 style games did not age nearly as well as pixel games age. Not sure how well this is going to sell.

I wanna see the full list of games before I commit on this. My interest is at least peaked. I would love to be able to finally put certain games in a case and quit risking further damage to them. I want to see FFVIII,Chrono cross and chrono trigger, FF Tactics and MGS in that list at minimum.

I mean, they could just make their current console backwards compatible and open up the ps1/2 library with a built in Emulator like Xbox is doing.

But nah fam, I need some other little BS Device in my entertainment center.

I won't be buying one. I still have my backwards compatible PS3 - which I hardly play.
I primarily play PS4 & PC now. If I bought one it'd become a dust collector.

Yar, I dunno. IMO these early generation 3d games don't hold up as well as the early generation 2d games.

They should've updated the PS TV with the Playstation Classic look then bundled PS1 games while still allowing access to the Vita digital library.

Looks exactly like my original Playstation that I still own.

No Destruction Derby or Resident Evil, no buy.

Agreed I pulled my old original PS1 out of the closet and hooked it up a few months back and the games that were "amazing" back in the day just do not hold up well. I mean there are still some gems like Castlevania SOTN and Final Fantasy IX (sorry VII and VIII were garbage).

Most of the good games have been re-released on pc or re-mastered. (Final Fantasy series for example)

The ones that haven't been are probably niche games that won't be on this or re-mastered. Brave Fencer Musashi, Breath of Fire III and IV etc.

Being around the emulation scene for a long time I find that it mostly revolves around Nintendo because their exclusives generally do not get placed on PC (they re-release them in virtual console so you have to re purchase).

Games varied in resolution up to 640x480, and most of them ran at 30 FPS with quite a few managing to reach 60. It just felt slower because motion blur wasn't a thing yet. It was a massive improvement over the 12-15 FPS of 3D games on the SNES.

Speak for yourself. PlayStation is still my favorite classic console after the Gamecube. My only problem with N64 is the controls were just not good in most games, but there are still classics on it that hold up to this day from a gameplay perspective.

I'm with you on wanting to see the games list. There are so many that I'd want that I know won't make the cut, like the PSX version of Doom for example, but if we're only going to get 20 then what's there had better be iconic and I agree that MGS qualifies. Looking at the rest of your list, I'm not sure if they will allocate 25%+ of the games list to RPGs (although there were some great ones from that era). Wonder if they will include Secret of Mana or any of the Resident Evil games?

PS1 games aged badly.
Not with emulation. There are dozens of plugins that increase IQ and makes them look pretty good.

Just adding bilinear fltering, shaders, and AA and its a completely different game.

No DualShock? That’s fucking weak.

Playstation 1 - 1994....dual shock...1998/99
So this is true to form
Quit yer whining

:)

Betcha they have them sold separably for $40 :p
See it's a USB port, maybe a USB clone will work.

Meh, pretty good on mobiles, just got done with MGS1 and a few others.
Looks exactly like my original Playstation that I still own.

Ha, not mine. Mine was the first gen with AV phono jacks.
Makes me wonder if the expansion port (or was it called the parallel port?) cover has something behind it or just molded?
Shame there's no link port, Armor Core and CnC RA was fun.

*fires up a raspberry pi and plays some THPS.

My 7 year old loves original PS games. Plays them quite often.

Back when it came out I was poor and it was pretty cool to do the "swap trick" to play pirated games. Even my GF at the time could do it. (I buy my games now).

Pre-orders were already live on Best Buy. I pre-ordered one Just for kicks.

Gah, I forgot about THPS, Destruction Derby 1 & 2, Jet Moto, Air Combat, Wipeout...surely some of those will make the cut.

Be interesting to see if it can be hacked like the NES/SNES mini.
Looking forward to the tear down to see what's inside.
