Coworker brought his copy of Mario kart 8 into work and we spent our lunch hour playing it with my switch on the company TV in our lobby ( nice 50" screen and soft leather sofas). What was better was half way through we had a small audience of coworkers all sitting around watching and cheering/heckling us, this is the first system where I felt like the advertising is realistic. The idea that you can just pull your switch and/or dock out randomly anywhere and cause a small game party seemed farfetched to me but it totally happens lol. I love the fact that the joycons can be split up for 2 players essential giving you 2 controllers out of the box for this exact scenarios.

That looks fairly interesting if you must game on the go. The Pro controller may be too much of a pain to carry around.

Personally, I wish they'd make another variation of the Switch. Ideally it would be cheaper but I'm not too sure if the changes would cancel each other out from a cost perspective.

  • Remove the Joy Cons. I am assuming they add to the price due to the attachment system and charging hardware required. Buttons would be fixed onto the side.
  • Add clam shell cover like the 3DS, so it is a better mobile console.
  • Cut down the size and screen size. Obviously keep aspect ratio, reduce resolution. I am assuming the resolution change won't be a problem and may give a slight FPS boost in hand held mode. Make it lighter and smaller, simpler to carry around.
  • Don't include the dock or joy con grip.
  • Ensure it has an HDMI slot and USB slot for TV/screen & accessories.
Idea is you can drop the price down a bit and make a package more ideal for on the go carry, but can still hook up to a TV/monitor and use the Pro controller.

Personally I just hook it up and leave it there, but will be using it in a mobile capacity in the future. I'd rather have a smaller design with a clam shell to keep crap off the screen (I do have a screen protector). When it comes to hooking it up to my monitor, I'd just plug the charging cable in, close the screen and connect my HDMI. Done, works the same as the regular Switch. The USB would allow me to charge my Pro Controller and play at the same time if I lack enough power outlets or USB (my laptop only has 3 as an example) and am away from my desktop.

With the money saved you can purchase a Pro Controller. Removable joy cons are great, but the majority of us don't need them. And the joy con grip makes it bigger to carry. May as well decrease the system size a bit and throw in a Pro Controller.

Would function exactly the same when in home console mode, and would be more portable. Yeah, you'd have to pull out two cables when you want to pick it up. Big deal. I have to do the same when I pick up my 3DS (pull out charging cable).

Anyhow, personally I think would have preferred if the Switch was like that.

Do you realize that the things you wish would be excluded, are fundamental to the core marketing and goals of the switch?

I agree a somewhat smaller Switch would be great.

Obviously the joy cons were a big marketing point but few use them and I don't think all games support them. But so was the 3D in the 3DS, yet I have a 2DS with no 3D.

Give me a clam shell design, slightly smaller and the ability to still hook it up via an HDMI. For me it will be a better portable and an equal home system. And if it knocks $50-80 off the price (kind of doubtful) that would be great. You're better off putting the money into the Pro Controller. And if you really want a dock, it can always be compatible and bought separately.

Well I was just walking through bestbuy today minding my own buisness and was greeted by this poor pro controller that needed a home, had no choice but to buy it! Figured in already $350 into this system wtf is another $90 right? lol

Pro Controller is damn good. I think I like it more than the 360. 360 makes my hands ache after long play periods, something about the bottom angle. But you could've bought it off ebay for $60 shipped. :p

Throw in one of those coupons they seem to run frequently and you can get it for under $50. For those interested I bought from this store:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Nintendo-Pro-Wireless-Controller-for-Nintendo-Switch-Brand-New/192581583796?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

About 3 day shipping to CA. My total came to $48 after the last coupon.

If you have other controllers like ps3. Ps4. Wii u pro. X360. XBO there is the mayflash magic-ns that lets you use them. I just got one for 20 bucks and using my ps4 controller which is way better than the joycons.

The ps4 also has rumble and motion controls which alot of the generic controllers dont do. No nfc though.

Gone Home is out on Switch Aug. 23 for $14.99. Now you can walk while playing your walking simulator.

So, I was looking for a grip case for the Switch, and noticed that one from IndieGogo earlier in the thread for $40-50 on Amazon... for around $23. So I bought one.

So far it feels pretty nice, but as far as being dock compatible...ehhhh. It barely fits in there in the first place, and the bottom of the case makes it not seat all the way down, so the connection is iffy at best. Plus, if you have anything plugged into the dock USBs, it won't fit at all since the grips stick out too far.

I also bought some of the thumbstick nubs from the same company, and those are pretty nice.

Is suggests buying a 3rd party replacements case for your dock (shell only! Never use a 3rd party's dock with unlicensed Nintendo electronics in it). Makes it way smaller and More accessory friendly. This is the one I use, simple 5 minute swap to put official docks internals in it.

Nintendo Direct for September:
https://smashboards.com/threads/nintendo-direct-on-thursday.458093/

Nintendo Switch Online will launch on Friday, September 21 and a two-week free trial will be available to all users. Furthermore, free early access to Nintendo Switch Online will be given to those that purchased and registered their Nintendo Switch within the first two weeks of the console’s March 2017 launch, starting Tuesday, September 18.

Subscribers will receive an extra 30% off sale items and 10% off regularly priced items in the eShop. Nindies Together is a new program that lets Nintendo Switch Online users gain free early access to some of the hottest indie titles currently in development and allow them to give direct feedback straight to the developer, starting with Bullet Age later this month.

On top of that, Nindies Together offers two free indie titles to Nintendo Switch Online users every month to play for the duration of their subscription. The first titles, launching on September 21, will be Crossing Souls and Assault Gunners HD Edition.

Nintendo Switch Online users will be granted access to several alternate skins in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when the game launches, including Dry Bowser and Cloud’s costume from the Kingdom Hearts series.

Smash won’t be the only game subject to Nintendo Switch Online perks, however. Splatoon 2 will receive special Nintendo Switch Online-themed Inkling apparel and two new weapons, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be updated with two new tracks - Waluigi Pinball and Broken Pier.

FINAL FANTASY XV — Pocket Edition is coming to the eShop on October 26.

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes receives a new gameplay trailer, revealing a new swamp stage. The game launches on January 19.

The Wonderful 101 is being ported to the Switch and coming very soon — on November 23.

Masuda-san appears with a new trailer for Pokémon Let’s Go! to reveal two new gyms and a new Pokémon called Gillybal, a Fire/Ghost dual-type with only one evolution: Gildragon.

Masuda-san has another trailer to present, this time for Smash. Little Mac and Bowser Jr. are squaring off in Boxing Ring, equally matching one another’s blows. A large silhouette is observing from the tunnel when Little Mac lands the final blow on Bowser Jr..

Little Mac celebrates to the roar of the crowd until the Koopalings jump him, easily defeating him and taking his place in the celebration. Behind them you can see a large figure quickly approaching and launching itself into the air. While Iggy still celebrates, the other Koopalings are body-slammed into the mat and Iggy reluctantly turns around to find the massive build of Incineroar looking down on him.

“Incineroar Rings the Bell!”

Incineroar has a wide range of attacks, including an uppercut, a lunge, two grapples, and a lariat.

His final smash buries the opponent into the ground, as he viciously pounds them deeper into the dirt, launching them at the end.

The trailer cuts back to the cinematic, as Little Mac gets back up ready to fight Incineroar.

Koizumi-san returns with another Smash character announcement.

Link, Shulk, and Marth are battling Rathalos in Coliseum. Marth is the first to be defeated, getting easily swiped away into a nearby column. Link fires arrows at Rathalos to no avail and Shulk meets the same fate as Marth after lunging at Rathalos.

Link launches a remote bomb into the mouth of Rathalos, who isn’t affected by the explosion. Rathalos returns fire to Link, but the flames are reflected — not by Link, but by Isaac from Golden Sun.

“Isaac Settles the Score!”

Isaac is not a typical Smash swordfighter as most of his moveset revolves around Psynergy, exhibited in the trailer. All four main elements of Psynergy are shown off, posing Isaac up against most of the Pokémon cast through the trailer.

The player can manually switch between Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Mercury quickly in similar fashion to Shulk.

Isaac has four final smashes, dependent on which element of Psynergy you are in at the time of activation: Judgment, Meteor, Thor, and Boreas.

Instead of a final cinematic scene, it ends with “To Be Continued.”

This is not the end of the Direct. Koizumi-san reappears with “one last thing” — a new trailer for Bayonetta 3, revealing Bayonetta’s new sleek black and rose gold-plated outfit and a release window of April 2019.

Sorry, I forgot to reply to this. That's pretty cool! However, one of the main issues is that the case pushes the USB-C socket further from the plug, resulting in an unstable connection. Unless the new dock actually extends the USB connector upward, I think the same issue would occur.

Realistically, getting one of those USB-C extension cables and then putting it outside of the dock would be a solution. Or some sort of USB-C micro-extender.

I'm also going to try one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078W4RXGR/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I can confirm that 8BitDo's adapter works for the bluetooth Xbox One controller: http://www.8bitdo.com/wireless-usb-adapter/

I bought 1x Nintendo Pro controller, and am using an Xbox One controller with this and it's been pretty flawless. Early models needed a somewhat complicated firmware flash, but mine was on the latest and it worked out of the box.

Just heard Civ 6 is coming in November, but I can't process it. Without severe concessions, I cannot imagine it running well or being playable... Especially in later turns.

I want to get excited, because Civ is my favorite series of all time... But I hesitate.

Anyone have more news or thoughts on this?

Civ 6 runs on iPads, so its not impossible. But I imagine later turns will still bog things down.

As long as they adapt to the platform it should be okay.

As a follow-up, I purchased one of these and it works great. It's very small and portable as well, which is nice.

It's actually on sale for $9 cheaper than what I just paid less than a week ago, too...lol.
please dont! that will burn out your switch.

The issue is that the switch has a very qeird non-standard power draw that adapters like this dont handle right and will cause a chip on your switch to burn out causing it to completely brick. When in dock mode it requires a very specific 15V and amp rating that no other adapters can handles except for the official switch dock. You can thank nintendo for not following everyone elses USB C standards for this but please dont use this as it will break your switch on you (google it if you'd like). Its stupid and I never thought I'd say this but never use a non-Nintendo certified dock, even if it says switch compatable unless its certified by Nintendo dont trust it.

Ultimately its up to you, I just dont want to see your switch die on you :(

Good info to have, thanks. I guess I will do some more research. I am using a certified Switch adapter for power, though.

EDIT: To me it sounds like the issue is crappy 3rd party AC adapters:

After installing the system update planned for September 18th, 2018 (Tuesday) at 5pm Pacific Time, it will no longer be possible to unlink your Nintendo Account from your Nintendo Switch user.

Prior to this change, it is important to confirm that your Nintendo Account or your child’s Nintendo Account is linked to the correct user.
  • To learn more about Nintendo Account for your child, please click here.
By ensuring that your Nintendo Account is linked to the correct user, you will be able to appropriately manage your save data, Nintendo Switch Online membership, and Nintendo eShop content.

How to Check
  1. You can review under each user’s My Page > User Settings > Link Nintendo Account. Part of the Nintendo Account holder’s email and nickname will display.
  2. If you are not sure if the user is linked to the correct Nintendo Account, check the following:
    • On the Nintendo Account website, sign in and select the Shop menu option on the left. Compare your current balance and total My Nintendo Gold Points with those on the Nintendo eShop on your Nintendo Switch system
    • If you are still not sure, compare the digital software on your Nintendo Switch with your Purchase History on the Shop menu or check to see if you have received purchase confirmation emails.

Seems 6.0 will do some stuff you might not like. More today from the Nintendo Direct.

They're pushing out the paid online service soon, so I guess this isn't terribly unexpected.

Huh. Cities Skylines announced. Both DLC packs included. Out now. Framerate in the trailer looked suuuper rough, but its neat to see a game like that make it to the Switch.

Wow those "special" NES controllers look so cheap and yet sets you $60 back. Nintendo is bad!!

FF XII that's a surprise.

For two controller's it isn't terrible. 8BitDo's conversion kit for NES controllers run $20 a pop and only include the PCB, so this is $20 more than buying 2 of those. It's pricey and definitely not for me, but I don't think the price is too horrible.

Nostalgia abuse to the max.

Yeah framerate was like 20 or so?

I think we're now at the point where just because you can port a game to Switch does not mean you should.

Nostalgia abuse to the max.
And we still don't get any love for emulation.

Ports of old games are cheap and easy cash grabs. The switch is going to be the go fund me too for ports.

Can't say much of what I saw in the Direct really impressed me that much. Rather than ports of games that IMO don't make that much sense to put on the Switch, I'd rather see ports of WiiU titles or other Nintendo stuff like Pikmin 1/2/3.

I feel like they must be trolling us at this point with the continued exclusion of Waluigi in Smash.

This is kind of sad it seems that Nintendo will let your online saves backup expire as soon as you cancel your subscription.

Those NES controllers also requires a subscription...

So, this isn't so bad on its face, I have three Switches to add and the family plan at $35-36 a year is nice. This is opposed to the 150-180/year I pay for PlayStation.

We'll see how it goes.

And yet my checkpoint saves on my switch will last forever, sad when home brew has been able to solve this issue for months by giving us a simple way to backup all our game saves to the SD Card but they cant promise not to delete our cloud saves without paying (aka blackmail)

I'm still not 100% clear on the NES games with the subscription. Is it still that we "rent" one game per month, or do you get access to a full library?

Based on what the Direct showed it looked like some kind of library, but maybe we unlock games over time?
