Final Fantasy VII, IX, X/X-2 HD Remaster, XII: The Zodiac Age coming to Switch and Xbox One in 2019

Weren't those just the PC ports?

It'd be nice if Square would release the PSP Version of FF4/FF4: The After Years instead of the odd Mobile version. It would also be nice to get original FFVI.

I don't know about IX, but VII on the PC is based on the PS3 version. X/X-2 and XII on the PC are based on the PS4 versions.

Isn't the PS3 version the PS1 Classics version? The PS4 version is the PC version with "cheat options." The PC version is based on the Eidos translation, not the PS1.

The switch is really turning into a port dumpster.

As long as the ports aren't taking time from developers who would otherwise be making new games (and 99% of the time, the porting is done by separate development teams) then I don't see the problem. Although as someone else mentioned earlier, I wish they'd port some Gamecube, Wii and Wii U games that aren't available on other platforms first.

What is the price going to be if these are full price titles then the whole line up is quite disappointing

Already have most of those games on Vita BUT if they release these as physical instead of just digital I will buy them.

Final Fantasy IX just came out today on Xbox One and Switch. IX is a Play Anywhere title on Xbox One, so if you buy it for that console you can also play it on a Windows 10 PC through the Windows Store. I have not seen yet if this version is any different than the version already available on Steam.

We also got a release date for Final Fantasy VII of March 26.

yay lets re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-release FFVII

I prefer the original PC version of VII. At least you can mod that. What we really need is the actual complete remake of VII but it will be a while before we see that released.

Well given the PS4 version been out for awhile now it is going to be cheaper. Still it was $40 in ps4 release. Just wait. I seen them dropping in price pretty quick.

I honestly don't have the room in my backlog for this, but $50 is a bit ridiculous. On top of that, the Asia and JP versions are far better, as they include both games on one cartridge, along with EN text and voice options for those buying for EN only.

To be fair, I think there is really no reason to play the original, as the International version is better in every way without completely changing the game and you still have the option of choosing the original or "advanced" Sphere Grid. The opposite is true of FFXII, where I feel both versions are too different and I wish the both the original and Zodiac versions were playable. I still have my PS2 disc, so I can still emulate it if I want to, but still.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age was released today on Switch and Xbox One. Looks like Final Fantasy IX is the only title among these releases that is Play Anywhere on Microsoft platforms. Price is $49.99.

And that's all of them, folks. I only wish we would get some kind of definitive collection that includes all the games in the series. At least give us a release of Final Fantasy VIII.

I'd be totally fine with paying $50 for all of them (I did buy IX on Switch already though), but $50 a piece is a little ridiculous. Switch tax for sure.

SE does not have the source code for either the PS1 release nor the PC release of 8 and the phrase "held together by duct tape and prayers" apparently perfectly describes the Eidos PC port of 8 so porting it to other platforms might not be feasible.

the "original" PC port of VII and 8 was absolute mofo horrid, so many complaints (including from me) is so not worth listing..might as well just get an emulated copy and play that way, possibly run slower etc BUT save where want and such and if setup proper far less god awful (too many to be mentioned problems) are basically avoided, and the few that get introduced and much easier to "deal with"

There is a version of VIII on Steam that was released in 2013.

Both that and FF7 are just the 90s Eidos ports of those games with fan patches (used without crediting the creators) and some cheats brute forced in. Every single modern console version of FF7 is based on the "updated" 90s PC port.

Source?

If you've ever played both the old Eidos ports and the "new" releases its pretty bloody obvious. They contain the exact same bugs and those bugs all exist in the modern console ports. Also, SE never bothered to remove the names of the modders from some files in the "new" versions.

Edit: And if you still have doubts, mods made for the 90s ports work on the "new" versions. The file structure is exactly the same.

So you don't have a source. Got it.

By the way: the new version of Blood released yesterday works with mods for the original game, too, so I don't see how that is proof of anything.

"The funny thing is, I got a call [a couple years ago] from Square, because they wanted to rerelease the PC version, and they asked me if I knew where the gold master was. [Laughs] I left the company in 1999. What am I gonna do with that? “Oh yeah, you know, it’s right here in my desk drawer. That big box that I carried out? Yeah, I was carrying the gold master and all the source. Let me just give it to you.” Yeah, they lost it."

Quote from Keith Boesky former president of Eidos.

"My understanding is actually — what I’m most kind of proud of — is that they kept the code. I believe the version that they put out on mobile and PS4 is actually the PC code that we worked on."

Quote from Frank Hom, associate producer on the original port.

And further, here is a modder talking about the PC versions of FF7:

I believe NightDive updated the Build engine for Blood specifically to ensure mods would still work. SE wouldn't have given two shits about mods if they made new ports, nor would they have needed to use fan patches if it was a brand new port.
