Forza Horizon 4

After toying around with the dev version of FH3 and peeking under the hood of it and FM7 really its the exact same game. Playground games tones down the upgrade power a little bit. Its the same exact engine except there is only one track with horizon. I would even venture to say that Horizon has had more effort put into the realism. FM is very very stale and it really seems T10 is just lazy and just wants to phone it in from here on out. When FM7 launched it had alot of issues FH3 had when it launched but they fixed. Also you notice that nothing was really done at all to FM7 until Microsoft bought playground games? Playground games already had the drift and drag sorted out and T10 just copy pasted it into theirs. The only thing that makes Horizon more arcade like is the way the game plays. But honestly i feel Horizon is a better game. Its far more social and multiplayer friendly. Dont get me wrong its fun setting times on a track with friends. But ripping around the open world with friends is much more fun.

I agree for the most part. Also, with how T10 has said they aren't even developing a new FM at the moment (instead putting more work into FM7,) it indicates to me that they (or Microsoft) are acknowledging the lack of innovation going on with the franchise and the need to go back and get shit right before they dump more money into the next iteration.

Playground Games isn't perfect either, though. They're getting pretty stale themselves as it's always the exact same core gameplay loop, just with a different coat of paint. They made a big deal about the "Showcase Events" and what did those turn out to be? Your standard checkpoint race, just with some cringey narration and some scripted animations going on that can't even interact with your vehicle. Then they announced the custom "player-designed" events, which turned out to be... the same race types, just with user-controlled car categories, time of day, and weather. Now with FH4 they've been advertising the "jobs system" and what is that? Well, at least the Chiron part in the demo is just another "drive to the marked location and do the speed zone/drift zone/speed trap/danger zone (jump)." Don't get me wrong, it's still my favorite driving game out there, but jesus it would be nice if they thought outside the box for once.

I agree. I know one could easily go in and say "Do these things" and it would be huge incrementals for the game. I feel like the devs are out of touch with their target audience. One thing i absolutely loved and alot of others loved in the FH3 dev version is setting the spacing of the wheels in the fender wells. They should also add in changable wheel offset and tire sidewall, and having different wheels on the front and rear. This is something other games have been doing for many years and it appeals to such a wide audience. Changing the upgrade parts power multipliers in the FH3 dev version was also awesome. I did it for realism and based all my builds in that on real life examples. Both games could win big on that stuff and quite a few other things. Ive noticed over time the engine swaps have gotten really lackluster especially with Horizon. There is only like 5 engines that you can swap in horizon games on all cars. The car list seems like its getting worse with each release as well. Im pretty favorable to the Horizon games but my first one was FH3 so im slightly jaded. The gameplay and missions are redundant for sure but the changes from FH3 to FH4 are quite a bit when compared for FM5 to FM6 to FM7. As for the Showcase events. I saw on one of the live streams they said it takes months to make each one of those and that they were labor intensive. However i feel that they need more of those but well see. I made a joke in the forza modding discords around the time that the halo one was released. Told them the other ones are Mass Effect, Gears of War, and whatever other Microsoft upcoming title they wanted to advertise.

Sorry to turn this into a rather ranty thread but im glad im not the only one who feels this way. Dont get it twisted. I have downloaded and played the FH4 demo to the fullest and i have every intention on buying FH4. The demo seems stable. It never crashed it just had some pop in issues at over 200MPH but that could be my system being at 100% on all cores and GPU at 100% for the most part. I honestly feel this launch will be better then FH3 though.

i think the biggest problem forza motorsports has is dealing with all the car manufactures limiting what they can and can't put into the game. even when forza 1 came out all the car manufactures demanded that there be no major vehicle damage visible on the cars.. they're also having to deal with race tracks allowing them to laser scan their tracks to add to the game because they think it could potentially give people an advantage on the track playing it in FM or because they don't want people knowing there's something wrong with it.. they also have a problem with car collectors not allowing them to scan their cars either to add to the game since they don't need permission from the manufactures to add them.

as far as FM7 goes, i don't see a reason to release a whole new game any time soon, the engine and graphics are pretty damn good and anything that's on horizon can easily be added to FM7. so i feel it's easier for them just to continue working on that and adding things as DLC. they'll make more money in the long run and cut down on unnecessary development time.

4790k @ 4.5, 16Gb, 970 1080p mix of high/ultra minus ssr and blur and getting 75+
runs great. I vsync to monitor and gpu usage is ~80% and cpu ~50% peaked at 70 for loading.

I see a lot of stick bumping going on, which has always annoyed me about console ports.

Next time you play on a console, watch what your thumbs are doing....

so stick bumping has nothing to do with how the game plays. It strictly only applies to games that are on consoles and PCs that is deemed a console port?

So if someone plays a racing game thats only on PC using a controller im pretty sure you would see "stick bumping" come into play for quick corrections of the car.

There is a cure of course. Use a steering wheel :)
Which is always an option. So I don't see what this "stick bumping" nonsense has to do with the quality of the game, given you also have to option of using controllers in PC exclusive driving games.

stick bumping is just one way people play. some play with the hold up and rotate method others only use light pressure to move the stick with higher sensitivity set. its all personal preference. me, I use a stick bumper-smooth hybrid.

I don't see why they even provide the "option" of turning the radio off if there's still a fuck ton of music that plays regardless. I want all in game music off entirely. What is so hard about that?

The only other time you should be hearing music is when you're near the main festival or starting an event.

Post race you'll hear it too where you're seeing your rewards.

I will say the built in benchmark is fantastic:

Really happy with the performance, this looks like it should be better than FH3 and FM7 were out of the box. I wasn't sure if I was going to buy this game but I don't have anything else coming out on my radar so I went ahead and pre-ordered after being impressed with the demo.

yeah i'm liking the performance, still trying to find what settings i can continue to turn up on my 1050ti.. their default settings for the 1050ti are super conservative though. the one thing i will say though is their system info detection is shipoopy.. says my 1050ti has 3.26GB of vram even though in the benchmark i can get it to hit the 4GB cap no problem which is shown correctly in the benchmark and it also says i have 19GB of ram which i have 16.

It runs better than Forza Horizon 3, and most importantly there is little to no stutter. The frame pacing was the biggest problem for me (not frame rate) in FH3, especially with FPS above 60. FH4 I can keep the FPS uncapped and it stays glassy smooth, as long as I don't get too crazy with the two mesh quality settings.

This is a large demo in playtime. Runs smooth except i have had quite a few glitches so far.

Seems pretty much the same as FH3. Feels slower due to cutscenes and just wanting to get back on the road.

eh cut scenes are just there to replace loading screens, i enjoyed the demo. spent most of my time just driving around instead of doing the races. brought back all the fun memories of midtown madness as a kid when i use to just spend hours driving around San Francisco trying to see how far i could jump big rigs and buses from the top of the hills. never played any of the other horizon games though but this ones definitely on my shortlist, good mix of elements from midtown madness, DiRT, need for speed, and forza motorsports in a single game.

I dropped $100 on the ultimate edition after playing the demo for a week.
I feel Horizon 4 is worlds better than Horizon 3 was and even further along compared to the shit show Motorsport 7 is.

Horizon 3 just felt boring to me. The graphics and performance aren't great and the tracks and map are plain.
Motorsport 7 is cool, the racing is fine, but goddamn if the sluggish menu system and car selection doesn't kill the game for me.

Horizon 4 looks beautiful, runs great for me at 4k and 60fps on high/ultra settings and just feels fun.

maybe this is a silly q but, no saving in the demo? I played up to the drive around and kill time bit and now I have to start over...

no saving, you get to do about 6 races and a few side events which should get you up to the requirement to unlock autumn but doesn't unlock. you get character cosmetic shit for finishing parts of the demo though.

ok. I got to the "waiting for autumn" bit where it says to drive around for a bit. all that's left is he red signs for speed and jump stuff. wasn't sure if there was anything else.

FYI as i didn't become aware until a few days into the demo

you can enter the festival at the festival location and mod your car in the demo

oh nice, didn't even bother trying that. can't bring my self to go through the intro part of the demo for the 10th time though to try it.

I took off this Friday to play it all day. I hope my drivatar isn't too hard on those of you on my friends list come next Tuesday :ROFLMAO:.

So what's the deal, should I cancel my physical ultimate order and just buy digital if I want to play Friday or will Gamepass allow early access as well but I'll miss out on the VIP bonuses until I receive the physical?

If you want to play early then I'd do the former. I have not heard anything after E3 about the Gamepass situation, so I would consider that to be a dead deal.

This looks awesome - route creation tool coming Oct. 25. You can even place checkpoints on top of houses (if you can get there, you can place a checkpoint.) This should be fun and add a ton of replayability to the game.
