Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 TI Can't Overclock?

Hi guys,

I just installed my Aorus 1080 TI non-extreme edition.

So running stock is fine, clock speeds run at 1569MHz (1683 MHz boost). I decided to play around with the clock speeds with MSI Afterburner. First thing I did was adjust the power limit to 150% and core voltage to 100%. After playing 10-15 minutes of Battlefield 1, I notice the FPS would just dip in half. I would usually get 130-140fps then it just plummets to 60 or lower. Even in Unigine Heaven, the FPS would drop dramatically to 30 FPS. I would always have to restart my PC for the FPS to return to normal. Also, adjusting the core clock to +20MHz the FPS would dip. Going past 25MHz would crash.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here but maybe someone can lead me in the right direction. Is it possible that I received a bad card?

Increase power and temp limit but leave voltage and other settings stock. See if the same dips in FPS occur.

You should read a bit first before trying to overclock that way.. do not increase voltage with anything newer than Kepler until needed.. to overclock increase power limit alone and monitor in game with the OSD how the card is clocking...

Then start adding little increases to the core clock and check again in game clocks.. then go with memory, forget adding voltage as it will just make the card reach faster the power limit and as happened in your case it may just even decrease the performance.. in fact in most cases decreasing the core voltage may even help to reach higher clocks
 
So just increasing the power limit is fine, no problems. I added 20MHz to the core clock, FPS starts to dip.
 
The worst I've ever personally see a Pascal card top out at is 1925MHz. What do your temps look like?

65C in BF1
69-72C in Unigine Heaven

So right now I'm in between 1936MHz-1974MHz with just power limit set to 150%... which isn't bad I suppose. I expected a little bit more lol
 
The early FE cards were binned and often could hit 2.1GHz range, but yes, the AIB cards generally are a crapshoot. 1974MHz is probably average. Also you don't need the power limit that high. Even 120% should be able to maintain those clocks without issue.
 
Pascal cards are also a bit sensitive in regard to temperature. On default settings, Pascal's boost clock down clocks starting at 52 C.

Around 2 GHz is pretty average. Nothing wrong with the card.
 
I have the same card. I set mine power level to 150, temp limit to 90, core to +65 and mem to +500. I'll get 2055 core and 6005 memory clocks while in game
 
Yeah, the FPS drops even adding +20 core clock. Oh well, setting the power limit to 120% is what I’m going to deal with. Not like you’re going to get much of a difference anyways... a 1080ti is still a 1080ti :)
 
I think the GTX 1080 Founders Edition card that youtuber Jay 2 Cents got during launch back in 2016 is still the highest boosting Pascal card I've ever seen at 2166MHz. (Minus LN2 obviously).
