WIndows Interrupts Chrome and Firefox to Promote Edge

Microsoft could just make their browser make Google Drive work like crap and not do this to OneDrive. They make their own browser so they can serve as a comparison and stop Microsoft from doing this sort of thing.

For a similar, but actual example, Google could update YouTube in such a way that Edge and Firefox pause for several seconds when going to a link (although it looks like they backed that out).

Microsoft has always had the capacity to make great products. Instead, they have pretty much always relied upon their ability to manipulate the market, instead.
Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.
Microsoft is like a highway all slowed down with traffic and constant construction; people only use it if there is no other usable, decent choice available for them.
They bought their way into a lot of their current products both as in purchasing it from someone else and throwing gobs of money at them.

They are market manipulators for sure. Their DOS license was anti-competitive and should have gotten the Anti-Trust hammer on them. They required that if you sold a Box with DOS, all your Boxes had to come with DOS which made a second OS added cost. No one could compete that could have made an OS back then & there were plenty. From they they fucked over IBM with WIndows and OS/2. Then then used windows to kill office competitors by making the price of admission for development only something they could support as well as screwing with the official and unofficial API's. They did a bunch of shit they should have been shut down for before even the IE issue which is tame in comparison to their past manuevers. But the stock was a good return, so fuck the law, don't threaten that stock!

remember that time they were sued for their monopoly on browsers?

did they not learn anything?

I'm sure they learned some loophole that will allow them to get away with it a little bit better this time. :D

When this happened with IE though, I was more on MS's side. They build the OS, and including their own method for connecting to the web made perfect sense. You could still install another browser.

This time around though, I'm just sick of all the Windows 10 BS, and couldn't care much less if they get smacked around again. (Even though I disagree with the EU most of the time on this sort of thing.)

Let's boil this down to the base issue here - at least as I see it. This is akin to one of the old full screen ads that used to pop up on various sites. Like it or not, this is an advertisment for MS edge. Not maybe.

So...MS is forcing me to look at an ad on my system with a copy of windows that I bought from them legit....yeah I have a problem with that. You already have my money, I shouldn't be subject to your advertising.

But I digress... Ads are everywhere, here to stay. Some idiot figures out somewhere to stick an ad that nobody thought of before and its hailed as a 'great advancement iin advertising technology'. Pathetic.

I know it took me a lot to clean out win10 after I installed it. I had to practically gut the thing. Dx12 is the only reason I switched. So far I'm wishing I hadn't.

Exactly.. The browser is a battleground right now as the platform to software as a service (aka: the cloud).

This has happened for a while hasn't it? I just click past it and go on with life.
The issue is MS is directly advertising in their OS. It wrong, period. Choosing ot install software should not result in MS nagging you. Edge is NOWHERE near the equivalent of Chrome.

IONO I rank Chrome with IE anymore... But maybe its just me being a long time Firefox user. I can't fault a company for advertising their own products. If the pop up recommended Chrome while I was installing Firefox that would annoy me.

MS telling me that Edge is there while installing Firefox meh they have to try.

I'm typing this from Fedora just as a FYI haven't used Windows outside of work for years... Instead of complaining I changed something :)

If one little add bothers you that much I would recommend either never looking at the media again. Or finding a new OS

I'm laughing as I uninstall Win 10 off the last machine in my house that had it. Which comes with fairly mixed feelings for me as I honestly never thought I would be actively opposed entirely to a MS OS. I've defended Vista for years as it was never as bad as the reputation it got and frankly got so many damn things right compared to XP it was sad how reviled it was. The only MS OS that really was a complete disaster would be ME and that is just because that was such a buggy unstable mess that even MS just gave up and replaced it quickly with XP. At least ME still as messy as it was, wasn't nearly the clusterfuck that is 10.

Great, and next they can get on Google for doing the same thing when you go to Google or Gmail YouTube in Edge, only they do it every time, instead of (apparently) just once, when you try to install Chrome.

That is slightly different. Let me start by saying that normally I am fine with what Microsoft does. I use windows, have a windows phone that will use until it is impossible to use a windows phone anymore (even if I have to buy spares to keep myself from using a fucking iPhone or android), have an xbox,

That said, it is different for Google to pop up a little window or banner on youtube that you could be using Chrome. Can't say what they do on google.com as I don't use google but use bing. But from what I have seen of Google of the few things I use of Google I haven't seen anything that actively keeps me from doing what I want. Preventing me from running an installer until I confirm that I am sure that I don't want to use Edge and tries to block the average person from installing it is going a tad too far.

Basically every build update I see these pop-ups come back. WIndows also tries to re-hijack PDF's back to Edge at the same time. It's ironic I go in and set things as the admin level and still Windows overrides them. I've at least got my staff trained to know that I'll log in after a build and put it things back. One of these days I'll make a script.

Get over it Microsoft. No one wants to use your browser.

Didn’t this kind of thing cause issues for them in the Netscape days back in the 90s?

Sure they did. Pay off more congressmen.
So...MS is forcing me to look at an ad on my system with a copy of windows that I bought from them.
Ah ah ahhhh, you own nothing. You rent their software. And I bet somewhere in their million page EULA is a statement equivalent to saying, 'We reserve the right to blow smoke up your ass, then bend you over a chair and drill you a new asshole'.

The vast majority of us also run some type of software that doesn't run on anything but windows. So we're stuck.

However, I do use Edge for two things: Watching Netflix in 1080p (not available on other browsers) and reading PDF files.
Get the Netflix app from the Store, it's actually rocking a pretty clean user interface that I prefer over the web version most of the time.

I didnt read any other comments.

Edge is undeniably faster in everything Ive ever used it for. I specifically use it for Facebook/Messenger as well as Netflix. I would use it as my daily if I wasnt invested in Google.

When I had Win10 installed this was literally the only store app I used and it was amazingly good. One of the reasons I liked it better was because I could move the program window wherever I wanted and not have to mess with the location of my web browser when starting up additional instances of it.

I disagree. They could create the most amazing browser the world has ever seen and people wouldn't use it because they created it.

That's very true, but they've earned their shitty reputation time and time again.

"Fool me once, shame on...shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

Haven't they been dinged against this MULTIPLE times in the past? i.e. forcing or persuading customers to use it's software instead of others?

I've also noticed the default search engine and browser home page mysteriously changing to Bing under both Firefox and Chrome browsers.

The point people need to consider is the fact that the only thing Microsoft stands to gain by forcing the popularity of their horrible browser is the ability to spy on people's web movements.

It must be nice living in a world where everything is absolutely good or bad. I guess it simplifies choices. Maybe even more than just that. /s

If Edge would block HTML5 video auto-play (or all auto-play), I'd switch to it tomorrow.

but i already got 3 assholes courtesy of google. i don't want another one. i can never figure out which one to poop from.

Most likely because there's something else in windows that gives it priority over other programs, or maybe it's just running all the friggin' time. Microsoft has always loved to set it's own programs to run all the time in the background, to make them look 'quick' when used. In the 90's, I remember finding it for the first time with Office, essentially eating up resources like a hungry hog, in order to make it seem faster than other office programs. Then they created windows 95 with the registry, so everybody could have their programs running all the time from the moment you started up the OS, all nicely hidden away from view of the customers, who would wonder why their systems were so slow. Who, of course, were then told the cause was that their computers were all too slow, so they'd have to buy another one. And another copy of windows was sold......

but i already got 3 assholes courtesy of google. i don't want another one. i can never figure out which one to poop from.
Don't you know that Windows 10 requires you to have 4 assholes to run optimally? I think it's on page 8,352 in the EULA.

Why? What's wrong with it? Not trolling, just wondering.

Asking a question you already know the answer to is a type of trolling, no offense. You're a bright guy with your ear to the ground around here, you've heard all the complaints.

Nobody would mind using Edge if Microsoft had given people a reason to. A big part of the problem was "first impression" -- it was absolutely awful for the first two years of its life, since it was a crappy store/mobile app masquerading as a desktop app - you couldn't even drag&drop to/from it. Someone opens a new tab and it freezes on them, guess what, that's a user lost forever because they're closing it and never looking back, no matter how much MS swears they improved it finally three years after the fact.

But its main problem is it doesn't really do anything better than entrenched leaders. Its still a pain in the ass to get plugins, and it still only works on Windows 10. Alienating Windows 7 and 8.x users was also a colossal fucking blunder, especially when Chrome and Firefox do not. MS's mid-2000's arrogance simply doesn't work in the current computing era.

Is it OK if someone using anything other than Chrome gets a popup saying how much better Google and YouTube are on Chrome, complete with download links, every time they visit those site with a non Chrome browser?

The difference this is coming from the OS, not inside Chrome's browser. You fell into the same shitty logic the Edge team did, 'But but Chrome does it, wahhhhhh'.

Inside Edge they can run whatever they want, not outside of it.

Both are lame but there's a distinction between OS levels ads, and browser level ads. When a users PC shipped with Windows 10 they're captive to the OS level shit and there's no easy or user friendly way of getting away from them.

Microsoft is also pathetically resorting to scare tactics to once again prey on unsophisticated and non-technical users "You want to be safer don't you?" -- F off.

MS is doing everything *except* the heavy lifting of building the amazing browser the ads claim. If they'd do that, the usage increase would happen organically.

The entire Metro era of suck has been plagued with half efforts, aborted initiatives and abandoned platforms. They've never really tried and given things a full effort but then are surprised nobody cares.

Chrome did it? You got that backwards. Alphabet did it. Chrome is what they are trying to leverage us into.
They are leveraging their other services, (YouTube and Google), to push adoption of another of their products. Chrome
My logic is far less shitty than trying to pretend that both companies are not doing the same thing. Leveraging one product(s) or service(s) to push adoption of their other products and services.

I think it is shitty of both MS and Alphabet to do this. Well, not really shitty, as much as it is annoying. In both cases it is just a popup after all. Easily clicked through. I merely get tired of people screaming about MS doing something while giving Alphabet and/or Apple a pass for the very same behavior. Then come along and try to say, "but it's not the same!!", when it is pointed out that it pretty much is the same. Both companies are pushing their browser by leveraging their other products. Not even sure how that can be debated with any level of honesty.
