Samsung Announces QLED 8K TV for Consumers

Who mentioned Prime, or free? I said Blu-rays, as in discs.
And there's nothing free in this world. Anyone who says differently is selling something: you.
500 at around $20 a piece is 10K. Is that what you spent for 4K?

I do not know what you are trying to get at? You want everybody to spend 10K to have all the 4k content? You spent that much? What?

You seriously think I want to watch all 500 available 4K Ultra HD movies?
Even some of the stuff that's not crap isn't to my taste (e.g., almost every "Best Picture" Oscar winner of the last 10 years.)

As to my investment, please consider that I started out by spending $5000 on the AV system itself.
Why not spend that much on the content for it? I've done it before: my old DVD collection
(well over 500 discs, now mostly given away) cost more than $10K.

It's not a big deal to me. I've been collecting movies for years, and I make a lot of money.
YMMV.

But not everybody is going to buy 4K's at that price. That is what streaming would be good for.
This I think is what people are talking about. Same with our DVD collection. We just never bothered to go blu ray or 4K.
Streaming 1080 looks good enough for me, but it would be nice for more 4K streaming content.

Sure, I have friends who are perfectly happy with cheap 1080p TVs.

High-end AV systems are like high-end gaming PCs: not for everyone.
But if you're going to go all-in on home theater, then OLEDs and 4K HDR Ultra HDs are the way to go.
It's noticeably better than any lesser combination.

Yeah, I do not watch TV or movies too much these days. We did buy the 4K TV but mostly because I smashed the bedroom one, so bought a new one for the living room.
Are 4K blu rays full 4K or upscaled/compressed? So now there will be 8K blu rays?

Depends on the individual 4K blu-ray disc. The discs can hold up to 50 to 100 GB and deliver it at 82 to 128 Mbit/s, using the HVEC codec, and do support native 4K@60fps. It's all up to the maker of the disc what they do with that, and whether they use a 4K source (native or from a 4K scan of film) to master the disc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_HD_Blu-ray

We consult reviews of the 4K disc when buying an older movie (e.g., the forthcoming Predator Ultra HD disc is reputed to be an excellent transfer).

Generally, the longer the movie, the more compression will be used. Those bargain-pack four-movies-on-one disc are going to be more compressed than a single-movie disc mastered by someone who give a damn.

So you only watch 1 movie? I like a variety.
So if you want to choose, it would be nice to have a a few hundreds. Now times that by 20. ;)

Sounds like someone needs to move out of his parents basement and get a job!

I’m getting a decent collection of UHD discs.
The quality varies from definite upgrade from BD to holy crap, this is the most beautiful razor sharp thing I’ve ever seen.
Totally depends on the original DI that was used. If it’s orignally a 2K DI, it’ll be an upscale. You simply cannot make a native res movie out of a 2K source. All upscales are not equal. Some bad, some insanely good. The HDR almost always impresses. Some truly jaw-dropping moments when done right.
I also watched all of these ripped off my NAS running on a high end 75” 4K HDR FALD + high end HT audio setup, dual subs etc. from a high-end HTPC running MadVR.
I’ve been in the UHD/4K thing since the beginning, along with the UHD disc / rip thing since the beginning.
It’s amazing stuff, done right. Most of my disc purchases are around $17-$25. I intentionally limit what I buy based on rewatchability and the fact I’ve got my select favorites and won’t waste money just to “collect” movies I’ll never watch.

People that like variety live in their parents basements and do not have jobs? Hopefully you are trolling or just special.

This is crazy. You don’t have to go 100% one way or the other. I love streaming for the convenience and variety. If there’s a film that I love and want to have in my (highly curated) collection, I buy it on disc.

Why on Earth have we got adults calling one another morons or worse because of their choice of media delivery? Everything’s so maximal these days, your way and everyone else is stupid.

Yikes.

If you are whining about spending $20 for a movie, you deserve all of the scorn I can provide...and more.

I wish I could like this 1,000 times. It seems rare when a discussion surrounding any subject doesn't devolve into tribalism, namecalling and snide remarks. People have lost the ability to be respectful of others' views and instead just choose a side and dig in, no matter the topic.

So you can't read, not my problem. Go back and tell me where I said that. If you can't keep up, then why bother posting?

I often like to hear why someone prefers one or the other, many times it shows me something I may have overlooked. I really can't stand how people seem hell bent on trying to find a way to prove someone's opinion is wrong or lesser than theirs.

I myself am excited for 8K tvs, maybe not to run out and buy one but to push the market and development of new products. Seems like with audio and video people would rather no further developments be made to it, I agree we probably are hitting a diminishing returns area, but just because grandpa can't tell the difference between 1080p and 4k doesn't mean all companies should just stop making smaller pixels.

I mean let's be honest, this argument has been happening since the invention of B/W tv as being unnecessary consumer money sinks.

Can we please wait until we can do 1080p properly without compressing it to point of it looking like crap? Oh sure, NetFlix claims that they can do 4K but it's compressed to the point of it looking like absolute shit. Why? Because we don't have enough bandwidth to people's homes yet and that won't happen until we all have FTTH/FTTP and yeah... good luck with that.

Last I watched Netflix 4k it looked pretty good. Might have changed in the last few years. Their 1080p is absolute garbage though. Luckily I only really watch it in my living room and I'm so far away from the TV you can't notice, but crap if you get close it looks awful.

If I still had my theater room, Netflix would be simply unwatchable on it. I would rent discs from them at that point.

Take your self-satisfied sanctimonious attitude and shove it.

What kind of nonsense is that? Do you really think someone's going to go buy or rent Blu-ray disc for every single thing they want to watch? Seriously use some common sense and look at what he's talking about which is streaming.
Dude, if you want the best video, get a disk. People who care about IQ buy or rent disks and FFS renting a movie from redbox is 2 bucks (assuming you didn't sign up to get coupons from Redbox.

How stupid can you 2 possibly be? You act as if everything someone would stream is actually available on Blu-ray disc? And even if it was you think I'm going to run to the store and buy a goddamn Blu-ray disc every time I want to watch something? I can't even believe the level of ignorance in some of these comments.
WTF does that have to do with ANYTHING.
The OP argued "Can we please wait until we can do 1080p properly without compressing it to point of it looking like crap?"
If you're too cheap to rent a disk or buy a disk, that's fine, but but the people who are early adopters (and 8K is very clearly in a pre-early adopter state) do buy disks (though they're mostly buying UHD now) and Blu Ray disks are cheap. And most new releases end up on a Red Box for 2 bucks (or less).

So no, my comment was perfectly correct. But hey, if you want to stream then stream, but quit whining that theirs too much compression, because we're not going to get uncompressed streaming and Satellites don't have the bandwidth to assign 54Mbits to every HD station.

I agree, but the point is that the person who started this said we shouldn't do 8k because we can't get good 2k. That's a blatantly false statement. We can get good 2k and 4k, but that's not being streamed or on Cable, because they don't have the bandwidth for those. If you care about Image quality, you buy or rent a disk. If you don't, then you stream.

I, like you, do both. For movies that I'm interested in, I buy them. For others I rent. Most of what I stream is Netflix/Amazon originals or TV shows that I missed when they were on TV, but if I'm streaming, I don't whine about the compression artifacts in shadows, because that's the compromise you make when you choose convenience over quality.

I hate samsung right now, my Note 9 is on backorder till novemeber apparently. I know that has nothing to do with this topic but im just angry!

Is it really so hard for you to comprehend THAT NOT EVERYTHING THAT SOMEONE WANTS TO WATCH IS AVAILABLE ON A BLURAY DISC NOR IS IT FEASIBLE TO GO TO THE STORE EVERY TIME YOU WANT TO WATCH SOMETHING NEW?

Is it so hard for you to understand that has not a fucking thing to do with making 4k (or higher) TVs? If you want streaming, you've decided to trade image quality for convenience and/or lower cost. It's the same thing that most people do when buying MP3s or streaming audio on Spotify.

What is wrong with you? The POINT is that you and especially the other guy keep flapping your lips about how we need to get a BLU RAY disc for everything we want to watch instead of streaming when everything we want to watch is not even on disc nor is it remotely feasible to do so.

Agree, if I want to watch it more than a few times and want the best quality I pick up a disc, otherwise streaming is fine for me. And no not everything will be available on 4k or 8k that is just how it is. I have some movies still on vhs I cant get higher than that.

You are an asshole, and you know I am right.
For pointing out that you were wrong does not make somebody an asshole, since you would be surrounded by assholes, by people correcting your mistakes.
I am an asshole by choice. :)

Ladies ladies you are both pretty okay? Now move on from this before you get the thread locked with name calling.

No, I didn't say that everything is on Blu ray, but most things I look for are. Less so on 4k, but it's still early going there. And frankly, the reason many things don't make it to Blu Ray and/or 4k is because people prefer the convenience of streaming over buying or renting a disk. That's fine. They made the same choice with MP3 vs CDs. But that choice means you get lower quality. That ain't changing anytime soon. If you want better quality buy or rent disks. If the stuff you want isn't on disk, complain to the studios. And suffer with streaming until you get what you want.

For 4k Streaming to match the current UHD disks, you'd either need up to 120mbps streams or a new compression scheme that allows the same as a UHD disk using a fraction of the bandwidth of that disk. Of course when that happens, they'll improve the quality of physical media to (which I'd assume will happen whenever 8k arrives).

I'm going to go out on a limb and bet that most home users don't want to chew through 50 GB of data for a 2 hour movie, because most of them have caps on data...and they probably don't have the d/l bandwidth to download stream a UHD Disk quality movie.

I actually had to get the unlimited data from Cox. 5 people in the household streaming something was just too much. I just watch the 1080 but I would not mind buying 4K blu rays for The Matrix, and maybe Star Wars.
I don't know how much bandwidth 4K takes much less 8K, but with a few running that might be too much.

4k on Netflix is around 24mbps. 4k UHD uses 82mbps - 128mbps
