We have 14nm Vega until the mid-2019 arrival of Navi on 7nm - How about a "Gigahertz Edition" redo?

That whole argument sounds silly because of the R9 290X. Faster and cheaper yet .....

yet?
it was faster, it spanked The 780 and the 780ti I remember seeing watercooled MSI R9-290X annihilating ln2 780ti's, but people still bought nvidia anyway. AMD realised that NVIDIA has mindshare why bother with chasing the high performance crown when those who want it will buy NVIDIA anyway e.g this forum.

Well to be fair the 290x was in serious short supply due to mining. Nvidia sucked at mining so they were easier to get, tho I did snag a 290x couple weeks after launch. Was a great card considering I didnt replace until this year with a 1080.

Hotter + louder + AMD drivers.

I didn't buy either, but I wouldn't have bought a 290X.

Those AMD drivers again... so crappy on release that they're still finding major performance tweaks years later :ROFLMAO:

To be fair, AMD's drivers have gotten better, but that's really about it. They're still hotter and now they're looking at being two generations behind. The only AMD card I've run since running a pair of HD6950s is the RX560 that I use to power my extra monitors.

And yet, hot as hell and noisy like a vacuum cleaner, no joke. I had one briefly and returned it due to that. It was throttling like crazy on a blasting 55pct fan speed. Plus the drivers....

Got a gtx 780 and loved it.

Got a sapphire R9 290X tri X no such problems.

Those were not available for a long time after I bought the ref version.

Yup. There was a deluge of loud ass cards using AMD's inferior reference blower, which people were modifying by cutting open the exhaust vents just to get the card to breathe. Massive open-air coolers followed later that got the beast quiet.

[and it still pains me that no one has really made a quiet high-end blower- from a heat management standpoint getting the heat out of the case directly is always preferable]

Want to know how you chase the high performance crown and mindshare? You release new products which aren’t a full behind your competitor.

Also the 780Ti was generally a bit faster than a 290X, so people bought it. If you think the 290X “spanked” the 780Ti, you are part of the problem.

AMD has been bad for the last 5 years because they cant execute. They are either late to market, have hot or noisy or power hungry cards, or are outmatched in terms of performance. Or combinations of all of the above. I've had several AMD/ATI cards over the years (9700, X1800XT but for the last decade nvidia has basically been taking them to town.

Nothing would make me happier than to buy a high end, efficient, performant card from AMD (because then i wouldnt have to buy a GSync monitor) but they offer nothing.

Hopefully things will change now that Raja has gone.

I didn’t see any videos like this for the 780.

I’ll take any chance I can to post that video. It never gets old.

The card had a high failure rate too... which no one saw coming... /s

It was great card if they put a decent cooler on it. Someone should have used some common sense at AMD.

Someone did. I waited for Sapphire to make the tri-X and it was a great combo.

i picked a Windforce 390X for my folks PC for £260, great buy.

Our sources also suggested that the 7nm GPU looks better than expected. Unfortunately, our source did not go into specifics so we do not know if this means that yields are good or that the actual 7nm GPU is giving a performance/power consumption. Bear in mind that these are some of the first details coming regarding the 7nm Navi GPU, in addition to earlier rumors suggesting that we could see the GTX 1080 performance-level at $250 price range.

Who knows :)

What would be really cool is if they can do 1080 performance at sub-1080/2070 power usage!

[because then it would make a ton of sense for budget-focused SFF builds]

Actually not because of the small form factor but because then it finally put that dreaded power problem behind them.
Then again this is only something in between for when AMD does release something high end ...

AMD has a power problem due to a massive compute heavy die. VEGA can be made to be more efficient then a 1080 if you want.

It performs way better on lower scale Vega 56 runs like a dream and does not take that much more power then a 1070. The mobile version of Vega do not have that problem either.

You can also check out the youtube channel of Buildzoid he explains in detail where Vega performance goes not only with over-clocking ...

I honestly think Raja couldn't get some features working in vega. DSBR was probably a big one. Primitive shaders were fail too. I think Vega would have been much more efficient if they could just DSBR working as intended. Look at what it did to maxwell. It was their biggest power/performance increase.

I think this above forced Raja to up the clocks to a point where it killed the power performance ratio. Vega is really really efficient when its not pushed out of its comfort zone. It was clear Vega did not go as intended. I was excited about DSBR but it was broke as hell lol. I am not even sure why Raja even talked about it when it never really worked. Although they didn't talk about it much though.

I am thinking it wasn't meant to run at the clocks it did had they gotten DSBR working as intended.

when they said that the vega was not the card they wanted. Enough said.
then they do a doom run on stage and later it was revealed that it was a custom sli setup.
HEAT, HIGH PRICE and low gaming speeds....what else could we want.

IF they come out with a card that can compete with a competative price I will buy one...until then AMD IS A JOKE

AMD is no joke, just hand them the same R&D budget as Nvidia and you will be surprised.

Nvidia does one thing well , AMD is a company that is bound to do 2 things well. And how many companies do you know that fight 2 "monopolistic" companies that cheat whenever they can get away with it.

I don't see AMD releasing anything coming close to 2080TI any time soon and when they do I certainly hope the prices are no where near what Nvidia is charging then.

  • R&D budgets are earned, not given.
  • AMD bought ATI so fighting on both fronts was a choice. It's not an excuse.

Honestly AMD is no joke, their high end GPU became a joke. Mid range is no joke. AMD as a whole was a joke but they are not anymore. Why? Because CPUs are what drives the margins, Lisa is hitting a home run there. Eventually you will see that money come home and they hit a home run on the GPU side too. She cleaned up the GPU side, and brought back some key players one of them Who was with ATI when they weren't part of AMD.

I think she put the right people in place. Raja was who he was, I don't think he knew how to manage what he had. If Raja was engineering only that would have been different. I don't think he knew how to manage the business side of things. Because he hyped almost everything. Wang knows his shit, I would rather have old ATI guy in there than anyone. But you won't see his work for a few years down the road, but I can pretty much guarantee it! As long as AMD handles the CPU side and keeps firing on all cylinders they will make a killer GPU because of it!

You may see Nvidia lead for a few more years. But I have full confidence that AMD GPU side will be no joke. I can bet engineers love Raja cuz he was probably chill as fuck lol. But sometimes that is the reason you can't get the job done. Accountability is everything, I didn't see him as a guy who could have fun and also be strict. It seemed like he was what you saw in public and on Twitter. May be he learned. There were too many things gone wrong that showed lack of responsibility. Like Rx 480 PCI-E power issue.

I honestly think Raja was intel guy for a while. Rumors that he wanted AMD to sell off RTG to intel, and then him taking off to Intel. IDK it seems like his head wasn't in the right place. It almost seems like he loved intel more than he loved his job. It was all politics in RTG that pretty much ruined business. You got what they cooked up during that period. Polaris mess of a launch and then Vega with broken features.
