Samsung Announces QLED 8K TV for Consumers

We dont even have a proper 4K bluray section at shops in australia...

They have that, it's called "Blu-Ray". Physical media isn't dead yet, and for very good reasons.
Blu Ray colour is worse than 4:1 compressed unfortunately but this is needed to fit it on the disk.
Instead of full RGB or the slightly worse ycbcr 4:4:4 (this doesnt use the full 0 to 255 shades per colour), we get ycbcr 4:2:0.

I agree with you, to lose Blu Ray would be a tough AV world.

If you listen to the industry they would try and tell you otherwise.

I have nothing against physical media, I just wish it wasn't optical based that gets scratched up etc. I mean, it's 2018 and 64gb SD cards are $15 now. Surely a mass produced read only SD card with a movie on it could be done for a buck or 2. Of course having just said that, I know it will never happen because it makes the movies too easy to rip. Also, media companies WANT us to scratch and break our stuff, so we have to buy new copies.

No, this makes 1080p sets nonexistent. Samsung sells ONE 1080p set currently, a 32". Everything else they make is 4k. It doesn't cost them any more to make a 4k set now than a 1080p set, and they get more money with 4k TVs.

LG isn't far behind Samsung, as most of their lineup is 4k as well.
Not in the 3rd world. Sure, they try to push 4k, HDR, curved, "smart", internet connected, etc... Too bad that all those "features" are completely useless in a country where the broadcasts are "digital" (aka 720p at best with very very heavy compression - if it works at all).
Windows in 4k is a mess, so hooking one up for HTPC duties isn't the best.
Since "TV" programming quality is so poor, we turn to our rivers and fishing rods and they are mostly found in FHD.
And prices are ridiculously high too for electronics.

So, what do we all go for? The 1080p sets with the best possible 1080p panel and with as few "extras" as possible.

So 8k widely released elsewhere makes me hopeful there will be one final round of great 1080p sets available here.

What a joke. No upscaling will ever be good enough to replace native content.

I'll be riding my 1080p TV into the ground as far as it can go. It really was a shame OLED never got to take off and develop more at 1080p.

In downtown Toronto doctor visits are free, albeit borderline useless for anything except major hospital visits; purchase taxes and the cost of living are huge (although property taxes are very reasonable), power is expensive, but I get an unlimited 250/250 fiber connection for 55$ a month... So there's that.
Cost of living was the reason I left Toronto. I paid more in rent for a one bedroom apartment there then I do for the mortgage on my house, where I live now.

Scratches haven't really been an issue since TDK's armor coating was standardized on blu ray. Much like smartphone screens, it's not 100% scratch PROOF, but modern discs are pretty resistant to scratching as long as you make SOME effort to care for them.

Well Bluray is the least compressed format out there....

This thread quite possibly holds the record for misinformation and shitposting. Lots of clueless comments in here from folks that obviously don’t know what they’re talking about.

Well since you do not cite any, you are included in that!

The 4K blu-ray's are way too expensive.

Can we please wait until we can do 1080p properly without compressing it to point of it looking like crap? Oh sure, NetFlix claims that they can do 4K but it's compressed to the point of it looking like absolute shit. Why? Because we don't have enough bandwidth to people's homes yet and that won't happen until we all have FTTH/FTTP and yeah... good luck with that.

Many people have found a way around this heavy compression with a very obscure/little known piece of technology call Blu Ray/UHD disks. Most people don't know they exist, but if you search the dark web, you'll find their are stores called Best Buy and Amazon that sell these devices as well as movies that play on them.

No, it won't. 4K will get cheaper because of technology maturity and saturation of the high-end market for it. 8K won't help.
True, but if they waited like all the naysayers on OCP, 8k would cost a lot more when the technology makes sense. We've been down this road before with 4k and 1080p (and arguably 1080i).

If you don't have small kids, you're doing something wrong. I've never had a movie that quit playing and on the CD front, I've got 33 year old disks and all the ones I bought (save for one) still play. The one that quit working was replaced for a couple of bucks..

The reality is that video disks work when I buy them. And work even after I've replaced them with a Blu Ray and/or 4k UHD disk. Hell, my VHS tapes still work (though I'm slowly getting rid of all of them)

4k60 is already quite cheap imo. And with 4k144hz monitors finally hitting below $1k, I am very optimistic in 2160p becoming the new 1080p for quite some time.

What kind of nonsense is that? Do you really think someone's going to go buy or rent Blu-ray disc for every single thing they want to watch? Seriously use some common sense and look at what he's talking about which is streaming.

The current generation of BluRay, triple layer, holds approximately 125 GBs of data. Do you know how much data a 90 minute 4K movie encoded at a proper bitrate is? 477 GBs!!! We can't even stuff a 4K video onto a BluRay yet due to space constraints when encoded at an acceptable bitrate, instead we have to compress it and compress it... oh God do we do that. Oh sure, we can compress 4K to fit onto a BluRay but is it good? No, not if you want the highest quality possible and yes, even 4K BluRay is not capable of delivering that.

Yeah, I have pretty bad eyesight. Without my glasses my hand is nothing more than a multi-colored blob until my hand is two or three inches from my nose. It's said that unless you have better than 20/20 vision 4K will be completely lost on you. Maybe that's why I don't give a shit about 4K, I can't tell the difference. And besides... you shouldn't be sitting that close to the TV, you'll give yourself eye strain.
The 30:1 compression of a UHD Blu-ray is a hell of a lot better than the 200:1 compression of a Netflix stream. We won't get "proper" encodes until the industry loses the obsession with optical media.

I have to wonder why.

At no usable viewing distance and screen size combination would 8k show a discernable difference over 4k.

With most configurations the benefits of even 4k are questionable at best.

TV makers have joined camera makers and gone full on "megapixel" madness where the metric is no longer relevant, but it serves a marketing purposes because consumers feel that "bigger number = better".

At this size, zoomed to 2.40:1. at 9 feet away. But then I'd be happy with real 4k if the prices would ever come down.

I do. I stream nothing, subscribe to nothing. Discs (that I own) and occasionally OTA is all I watch, except for SpaceX launches.

And unlike streaming services, movies don't leave your disc collection unless you want them to.
As opposed to, for example, all the Disney, Pixar, and Marvel movies that are leaving Netflix in the next year or so (if they haven't already).
But hey, that's fine, people will still have those Netflix-produced Adam Sandler movies to watch.

Well good for you but that's not the least bit realistic for most people. His comment was flat-out pure idiocy as no way in hell most people are going to get a Blu-ray disc for every single thing they want to watch at 4K.

This. I am not going to spend a few thousand just to have a new format come out, rinse repeat. We do not buy physical media anymore.

Feel free to keep renting your entertainment, owning nothing, for the rest of your life.
You'll have no one but yourself to blame when the stuff you used to enjoy is taken off the servers and no longer available.

The 1st world is bifurcating into two groups: those that rent, and those that own.
I prefer to own: my house, my cars, my furniture, my electronics, and my movies.
That way, I'm not at the mercy of a "landlord" that may decide they don't want me as a client anymore, or may decide to jack up the "rent."

YMMV, so feel free to sign up for "Life as a Service," paying to breath until you die.

Settling for mediocrity. The battle cry of this generation.

How stupid can you 2 possibly be? You act as if everything someone would stream is actually available on Blu-ray disc? And even if it was you think I'm going to run to the store and buy a goddamn Blu-ray disc every time I want to watch something? I can't even believe the level of ignorance in some of these comments.

The ignorance is all yours.

I don't care whether you run to the store for a movie or not: I do, usually on release day.
So I have a large library of discs that I like and can watch whenever I like.

Maybe it's a habit from back in the days before streaming. (Heck, I used to buy Laserdiscs.)
Perhaps you're too young to remember those days.

Or perhaps the reason you don't understand is because I've got a lot of money, and you don't.
I spend way more on discs in an average month than a Netflix subscription would cost, but I don't mind, because I own my discs, unlike the peons that rent everything.

Keep on renting. Keep on watching whatever crap Netflix allows you to watch.
But there's no way I'm going to lower myself to doing that. I have standards.

Oh, and another thing: nobody but me knows what I watch, when I watch it, and so on. I have privacy. Can streamers claim that? No, they are profiled and marketed to based on that profile.
Like my friend who had guest over for a while, and wound up with a bunch of LGBQT rom-coms in his Netflix suggestions list. But go ahead, streamers, sell yourselves, be the product.

No, the ignorance is on anyone stupid enough to think that people are going to go to the damn store every time they want to watch a new movie or series. Really this has to be about the dumbest f****** thing I've ever heard of.

So are you saying all of the Netflix and HBO originals are available on Blu-ray the day they air/release?

Movies I will watch again or series I will watch again I buy physical media; everything else is rented or in the case of Netflix, Hulu (insert content provider of choice) I stream.

So are you saying all of the Netflix and HBO originals are available on Blu-ray the day they air/release?

I don't care to watch any of that crap, so I don't care. We had Netflix for a month, and it was worthless to us, so we canceled.
And I don't need movies to be available on the day of their theatrical release, much less their cable release. Unlike children, I can wait.

But feel free to keep renting movies. I'm going to keep buying and owning them, forever.

And no, I won't loan you my MCU collection when the only way to see it, other than on disc, is through Disney's subscription streaming service. If you ask me, I'l just laugh and put a beautiful 4K HDR disc on the player, reveling in your self-imposed deprivation.

You need to listen to yourself more carefully.
Tell yourself whatever you need to feel better. Bottom line is only a moron thinks going to the store and buying a f****** Blu-ray disc for everything they ever want to watch is feasible. Anyway I'm done with you so knock yourself out with yet another ignorant reply.

Yes, that may be true but it's still not quite there yet in terms of what video quality should be.

Goddamn, man, you are excessively picky. I find nothing to fault with well produced 4k discs.

Well since you do not cite any, you are included in that!

The 4K blu-ray's are way too expensive.

Define "way too expensive"? I just bought Spiderman for $20, which includes the 4k disc, a 1080p blu ray and a digital copy. Even at $35, you are essentially getting studio master quality for home use...still seems like a bargain to me!

So you only watch 1 movie? I like a variety.
So if you want to choose, it would be nice to have a a few hundreds. Now times that by 20. ;)

And yet I've been doing it for years, proving you wrong. It's feasible because I have done it. Q.E.D.

It's an easy process with only two prerequisites:
1) Make enough money (but my OLED TV cost as much as 100 4K Blu-Rays, so it's not that much), and
2) Don't waste your life watching garbage.

I'm not sure why you are so unwilling or incapable of understanding this, and so angry that other people do.
Why do Blu-rays piss you off, if you don't buy them? Jealous, maybe? Sour grapes?

A search of Amazon shows over 500 4K Ultra HD Blu-Rays are currently available.
If you need more movies than that, you probably need a life as well.

And unlike Netflix movies, most of the movies on 4K Ultra HD Blu-Rays are not crap.
(Although Bladerunner 2049 certainly is, but it is on any media.)

Define "way too expensive"?

Better yet, define "way to expensive" to people who bought OLED 4K TVs to view their Ultra HD movies on.
I can understand if people with lesser TVs find Ultra HD discs expensive, but they're not meant for those people.
It's a waste to run a good Ultra HD disc on a crappy display.

I did not know there were over 500 4K movies available for free on prime.

Who mentioned Prime, or free? I said Blu-rays, as in discs.
And there's nothing free in this world. Anyone who says differently is selling something: you.
