While Star Citizen fans are a tolerant bunch, even they have limits: the community voiced their displeasure when Chris Roberts tried to sell the idea of $20 digital passes for those who couldn’t make it out to the latest CitizenCon: it seems that Roberts wanted to charge people for livestreams, as the effort and equipment would increase expenditure on RSI’s end. Following backlash, Roberts will make the show available to anyone with a Star Citizen account.

The complaints arose from two rather obvious points: First, that Star Citizen has pulled in more than $193 million in crowdfunding (so zipping people for 20 bucks to see what's going on seems pretty chintzy), and second, despite being in development since 2011, it's still not actually out yet. The uproar was such that Star Citizen head guy Chris Roberts posted a lengthy message explaining the reasons for the decision—which he said was his idea—and also walking it back.

7 years ago this game got my $50. I still want this game to happen if for nothing else than the pressure it would put on EvE and Elite Dangerous.

The problem with Chris Roberts is he won't listen to "no". Everything he wants to do is proposed for pretty much every project, then gets rejected for time/cost reasons very early in development. Roberts wants EVERYTHING, so the end result will almost certainly be a bunch of disjointed systems where half of them don't really work right.

Is this the tipping point or just a rumble?

Until the in-game economy is fleshed out I don't consider it the game it intended to be. I know that's a much lower priority to most folks compared to the flight, physics, etc but a MMORPG without an economy is like a soup&salad at Olive Garden that doesn't include a salad.

Instead of a digital ticket, fans who want to help defray the costs of the extra streams can purchase a "Digital Goodies Pack," with an an in-game wearable duster jacket, CitizenCon 2948 trophy, CitizenCon 2948 Weapon, and access to purchase exclusive CitizenCon merchandise, for $10.

I'm wondering if the name of the event is an indication of when the game will be out? 2948?

Difference being Blizzard's games were not crowd funded, undergo continuous development, and they are released.
Still doesn't excuse the fact that they literally charge you money to watch a video stream of the event and not actually be there, and being as it was DirecTV I'm sure they charged an extra $10 if you wanted to watch in HD.

Eh... so kind of just like what Blizzard does with Blizzcon?
Roberts is desperate to be considered one of the big boys, and for CIG to be considered on a par with companies like Blizzard/Activision, so everything he does is a third rate imitation of what he sees proper AAA publishers doing, even though the whole point of CIG's approach (in 2012 at least) was to avoid the excess and micromanagement of traditional publishers, which supposedly handicaps AAA games.

He clearly didn't understand the part where Blizzard actually delivers massively popular games which earn a ton of money, rather than relying on begging and donations and impossible dreams. As a kickstarter backer, it's a mystery to me why anyone is still giving him money.

You can build an actual rocket and go into space in the time it takes these guys to not finish a space game.

At least it isn't illegal to scam stupid people.

They can't. The basic mechanics are horrible broken after 6 years.

I dunno, I played a little during the free event last weekend. Flight mechanics seemed fine. Granted I didn't do much, I spent so much time waiting for the 40gb download that I fell asleep.

I have an operational model: it has to be better than X-Wing. The original. Running in DOSBox.

Compared to that model, all will fail.

Honestly I would pay $60 right this second just to have HD X-wing and Tie-Fighter remasters. I don't understand why they haven't done this. No progress at all since Alliance. I think I read somewhere about a legal issue with Totally Games (Larry Holland) holding some rights to the engine or some such.

Hell at this point I would be happy with HD Rogue Squadron series. Even though those weren't all that great.

I mean, WTF Disney, you no like to make money?

edit - yeah I'm vaguely aware of the x-wing remaster project, but it was still in limited Alpha in 2017 and no updates since. https://www.moddb.com/mods/xwvm/news/xvwm-pre-alpha-test-guide

I think there was an Alliance remaster mod too... but IMHO, Alliance was the weakest of the series. Tie-Fighter was the best.

If Tie Fighter was made now, the Tie Advanced would be a preorder bonus or loot crate item. To get it in-game, you'd have to grind daily missions for a couple months.

Without that - hey man, good luck with your buzzing beer can against A-Wings.

You're probably right. And I would gladly pay for that TA !!

Chris Roberts trying to squeeze more money from people? I may faint from shock.

Fool and his money will soon be parted.....anyone thinking that streaming footage from this kickstarter was worth paying money for is foolish. The game isn't even finalized, he has such big ideas but no execution of this idea for the last 12 years......shifting goals posts anyone?
