Earlier in the week, VideoCardz published the first non-official performance score of what the editor believed was an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080. It achieved a GPU score of 10030 on TimeSpy, which would indicate performance on par with a slightly overclocked GTX 1080 Ti (9520). The editor continued the story on Twitter this morning with a newly leaked image of the TimeSpy score for the 2080 Ti (12825). Assuming it is genuine, the 12825 score suggests a 35% improvement over the 1080 Ti.

The score itself was sent me to few days ago; as far as I know, no one outside NV and AIBs had the drivers at that time. So it could be fake, or using the wrong drivers. Unless it was from NV employee or AIB.

The “author” actually said it might be a 2070 and said to be wary of anything leaking because no one has drivers as Nvidia is forcing you to log into a secure site to download a marked driver that can be traced back to the reviewer.

If this is right - it’s a bit dissapointing because Hot Hardware has an interview with a Nvidia Exec that said to expect “about 50%” in games where 1080ti struggles due to settings

His quote was "up to 50%" there is a difference.

I don't care, all I want is the fucker able to be shipped. After over two years all I can say now is fuck this S L I.

Children and economics.

As someone with an actual degree in Economics - I have to +1 this.

Doesn't matter if it's a GPU, trendy clothes, a car, the latest medical breakthrough, you want the latest and greatest cutting edge stuff. Break out your wallet. If the card was truly overpriced, it wouldn't sell at all. Obviously this isn't the case.

is $1200 for a GPU a lot? sure, but nobody is forcing people to buy it. Believe it or not, high end computer hardware for the consumer is actually cheap relative to some other hobbies people are into.

For everyone in pitchfork and bitch mode -- how much sympathy would someone get if they went on endless rants online how the latest Ferrari is just too expensive for what it is and they just can't afford it relative to the last generation Ferrari? I liken the whole situation to the people that get angry and bent out of shape when they see someone rolling around town in an ultra expensive exotic car. If they will never be able to afford it they adopt an instant shitty attitude over the whole thing. It's perfectly natural to want something new/exciting, make a plan and work towards it if money is an issue even the crappiest plan will accomplish more than sitting around complaining.

The old saying "it's only worth what someone is willing to pay" works at the top end too. I look forward to getting one, but I'm happy to wait a few extra months for reviews and available stock to show up online.

Yep, it's definitely a cheap hobby. My ammo bill alone would water some eyes around here. I should start reloading, but I just like the convenience of UPS dropping off my ammo at the front door.

I bet a bunch of those bitching would blanch at the amount they spend going out to eat every year if they added it up.

fellow gun enthusiast here as well :) I don't shoot nearly as much as someone serious about the hobby, but I do reload my own brass when it comes to the .50AE (it's fun, saves money, and it's relaxing in a way)

The Food bill is an area so many people don't recognize either, there are huge chunks of people out there that think nothing of spending 5-10-15 dollars a day on fancy coffee made for them. Based on the spending habits of some people I know, they could give up "fancy" coffee for 6 months and get a free 2080Ti. Of course if you point that out to them suddenly its "well I *need* that every day to survive". pffft okay, then you don't need a 2080Ti either.

Except we've seen absolutely zero third party benchmarks or testing, or any proven sale numbers, let alone inventory numbers and shipments.

It should be obvious, no factual statements can be made yet about the sale of these cards.

Consumers may very well vote with their wallets. Which if you understand economics may drive down the price of these cards.

I suspect a massive price cut once the initial round of pre sales take place, and more and more people review these cards.

Yeah id say id feel bad for the preorder folks when two months in a price drop comes, but they seem to be ears plugged, eyes closed, yelling FIRST!

Anyone not waiting for 7nm at this point, is gonna be real upset when those cards come out, and decimate the 20XX series. Huge leap forward for 7nm, and im sure Nvidia will have first gen RTX issues resolved. Id suggest waiting a year and getting huge gains if your rig can stretch one more year. Also giving Nvidia a big old middle finger to the price gouging this gen, greedy green bastards...

Children and economics.

This forum and site is hilarious these days in it's anti-nvidia/intel bias. It's gone past concerning and become actually funny. I don't know if it will be 35% faster or not, I don't really care. but I kind of hope it comes out and is even more just to enjoy the squirming. I'm not going to get the 2XXX series because raytracing seems very new indeed and I'm concerned it's not ready in this first gen. Like you say though, I'm not sure people understand economics, double the price for 35% more speed isn't unheard of at all for people who want the very fastest. A BMW 5 series might do 170mph, and a Ferrari will do 200mph, but the price might be triple or more. That's just the way top performance and costs work. Diminishing returns

Why would I be upset when 7nm comes out as a RTX 2080Ti owner? I'll buy a 7nm card and push my 2XXX down to the back up box.

Or two to two and a half years, and amd brings no competition and Nvidia stretches out this next gen as long as current gen.

The state of video cards has been sad for some time now.

AMD's ridiculously bad performance in producing decent GPU's is solely to blame for the situation we're in. The only reason they're still in the game at all imho is because they killed it within mining. It does make me chuckle to see people here simultaneously bitching about mining, then supporting AMD, who benefited from it hugely. I'm hoping Intel's rumoured GPU release kicks serious butt so we can get some competition going again.

What's the deal with lolbertarians trying to brag about having a basic understanding of economics?

Seems like a pretty big let down. Meanwhile brand new AIB 1080s have gotten as low as $380....

Performance figures don't matter though to those who are willing to plunk down cash sight unseen. Same thing happens all the time in many of the high end/exotic cars. the La Ferrari sold out before it was even released. People plunked down cash for the latest gen NSX before it was fully "out", and people who want to the the first on the block with the latest Cobra or GT350 don't bat an eye at the 5 figure "market adjustment" line that many dealers slap on their bottom line.

Assuming AMD can get it's butt in gear, and that nvidia did a good job on the manufacturing costs side of things, I'd fully expect a nice price drop as well down the line for now though being the first on the block with a 2000 series is worth some money. As much as it pisses people off they are simply maximizing their profit, which any good business does. When you are the only one cranking out next gen high end hardware, that's one of the perks (edit) you get.

You are correct that people vote with their wallets, it's a natural and good thing. The one thing many people often forget about when they feel they got a bad deal... is that it takes two people to make a deal and for them to agree to the terms/price. If I ever find myself feeling that way, you have to learn to slow down, figure out what you actually value and make wiser decisions in the future.

because things like perceived value and marginal utility are important things that factor into the decision to purchase a luxury item like this. You know that fancy book stuff you don't care to know about even though its pretty important when it comes to understanding how this market is working and why things are the way they are. Supply/demand/utility curves are your friend. The sad part to me is most of the people bitching and waving torches honestly think that *their* perceived value and willingness to pay should apply to everyone out there. It's simply unreasonable to assume everyone else has your perceived value and/or budget.

I don't know jack shit about photography, and the phone on my camera does everything I need perfectly for dirt cheap, however I fully recognize the fact there are people out there who will spend thousands more to get better results that I would consider marginal. (Results I don't know or care about being a non photography guy)

There's nothing wrong with your perceived value of the card - but your thought process is like saying "I have a perfectly good Type R civic, and I'm so disappointed in the newest Lamborghini SV that just came out".

Can anyone blame nVidia? It's not their fault they have no competition but themselves. We can only hope that Intel can deliver something in the future that will at least make nVidia have to compete with someone other than themselves again in the high end GPU market. I won't hold my breath of course.

I don’t really get the people saying that AMD is 100% to blame for Nvidias choices and actions.

Yes the lack of competition enables this, but this mentality is borderline victim blaming. Not that AMD is the victim, but it’s similar enough.

His quote was "up to 50%" there is a difference.

In the video he says 50% many many times and even agrees 40%-60% is a good range BUT this is only in situations where the 1080 struggles like 4k HDR and does include higher boost clocks.

Nvidia is behaving as a company in its position largely should. That's a business perspective that doesn't significantly jive with how a 'community' might expect them to act, but they're not an aberration.

However, beyond that, AMD is responsible for leaving Nvidia in that position.

As much of a push as AMD has made with Ryzen, they're still a hairs breadth from extinction.

Maybe it's just the people with too much money and not enough sense. Spending 1200 bucks on a video card to play games is a personal finance decision. Stop blaming AMD. Nvidia set the pricing and as long as everyone eats what NV feeds them, they will continue to dish out their half baked caviar. If the Ray traced 1080p up scaled image of me rocket launching you into virtual oblivion is that important to you for 1/10th a second - then shut up and eat it. Blame Nvidia and Jensen's greed, and yourself for buying it.

I think the majority of people are forgetting the $1200 price tag is for the founders edition. Once officially released the stock standard price tag is $999 for the 2080 Ti.

Of course there will be multiple variants from different partners at varying price levels, but your vanilla stock standard 2080 Ti is $999.

To be honest, as long as the card has a decent cooler, I'm not even sure there is much value in getting a factory overclocked 2080 Ti considering the auto-detecting overclocking tools for the RTX series will largely negate that necessity.

Not really no, as I understand the costs involved in the hobby which requires mucho ammo. But I've also seen new guns lose say $500 in market value in 2-3 years. Even before the mk2. gen came out, Tavors went from $2200+ to $1700. Hey, thats standard GPU like depreciation! You may like that new rifle/gpu/whatever and good for you, I'm still going to criticize you when buying a new, overpriced hyped up product. At least the Tavors were already proven designs when released in the US.

People who think this is Ok are probably the same who were happy with the paltry Intel HEDT offers before Ryzen.

After consistently upgrading my computers every two years for almost 20 years I simply found no compelling reason to keep upgrading.
My current i7 is 7 years old and just now I am waiting for 2950x stock for my -at last!- next upgrade.

So I will wait for a competitive AMD/Intel GPU in 2020+.

The guy with the economics degree perhaps needs a computer architecture degree to understand why this is a rip off.

Nvidia efforts to control the narraitve of this product launch are pretty telling. I'll wait for real world reviews of retail boxes to judge the merits of the GPU.
That being said even by Nvidia's own ridiculous claims price wise it is a rip off.
