As everyone knows, 4 people were killed and 11 wounded at a Jacksonville Madden tournament when one of the losing gamers went postal. This didn't sit well with the gaming community and it's not sitting well with EA. They have established the Jacksonville Tribute and will donate $1M to the victims and are establishing a fund so others can contribute alongside their donation. You can watch the livestream of the event on September 6. Hats off to EA!

We would also like to help by bringing the gaming community together, and uniting in play, through the Jacksonville Tribute Livestream next Thursday, September 6. We’ve heard from so many of you that you would like to support the victims, and to show that this horrific event will not define us, but only serve to make our community stronger. We’re already working with many of you to help make this happen through the livestream.

A hundred people died yesterday in car accidents. And the day before. Today won't be any better.

The only thing EA or anyone else sees in these "tragedies" is a chance to score some PR points.

First: Accidents and murders aren't the same thing.
Second: This was in EA's wheelhouse.
Third: Your edges are too sharp for lesser humans, you must be so very proud.

You're right.

Accidents aren't nearly as convenient to exploit via a live streamed "look how great we are!" event.

This is a professional marketing department doing preventative damage control under the guise of empathy. Apparently they've gotten pretty good at it.....

Man, the Telethons and tributes after 9/11 must have made you apoplectic, how did you ever come down from the injustice of tributes to victims of tragedy?
I don't know yet but I'm sure you'll tell me since you're trying so hard to put words in my mouth.

Good for EA

Though, this won't get me to buy one of their games anytime soon.

They didn't have to do this, it wasn't their fault, they didn't know that kid would shoot other kids.

I think you're doing just fine digging a hole for yourself on your own. It's a feel good PR stunt, yes. However, believe it or not, EA is run by human beings, not soulless monsters (though I can understand how their business practices could make you believe that was the case, lol) who most likely do actually care that people died at this event. EA sucks, but good PR is good PR. Let's criticize them for their next shitty game and lay off stuff like this, yes?

True. I really don't respect Equifax, but if they donated $1 million to a good cause it would still be a good action.

Most 'accidents' are the result of inattention or willful negligence. Murder may be too sharp, but people are killed every single day through the unlawful negligence people display while driving..Self-driving cars cannot get here fast enough.

Those are actual tragedies, completely senseless loss of life is a tragedy for the families of the dead, your quotes around it are shameful.

Also less people die in car accidents today than before even with growing population: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor..._VMT,_per_capita,_and_total_annual_deaths.png

Maybe EA earns some PR points. I don't mind they do, they're at least helping out those families financially. I'll contribute some money once the fund is set up. What, other than an uneducated, edgy post are you contributing?

Would you be so kind to clarify the statement? On the outside it reads as if you are advocating murder of EA employees which isn't cool.

Or it could possibly be you are referring to EA holding the tribute event in their headquarters yet wording didn't seem to reflect such.

this would be awesome if it happened inside EA

EA didn't have to do the Tribute but are stepping up to the plate to genuinely help the victims. As much as I disagree with several of their policies I give credit where credit is due. Well done, EA. **Tips hat**

Look for metal detectors at the next EA event. Oh wait what about a 3D printed weapon? In reality, an inaccurate one shot 3D printed is pretty worthless.

Worst post (hopefully joke) ever? Would it be sweet if it happened inside of your organization? wtf man. EA isn't forcing anything upon you, don't play their games - so many people feel so entitled these days and expect that business runs the way that they want... or else they'll cry on the internet.

All the whiners about EA, Ubi, ATV sound like jilted lovers. Begging for the honeymoon period of yesteryear and wishing they never changed. I don't agree with all of the practices, but get over yourself. Don't buy their shit.

Edit: Sorry Kyle - just was a little appalled by the post. And on topic this is a good thing and more organizations should be doing it after tragedy. If they can live stream and generate even more than the 1mm they are donating more power too them.

Oh well... PR or not. It's good news, and I like hearing the good news in a sea of shitty news. Whatever their intentions are, it's nice to hear they are helping out those involved in a tragedy. Of course, if anyone does anything good and it gets shared, it's obviously for the recognition and/or PR points, not just for doing good. Almost makes you not want to do something good so you don't get shit on for it... What a world we live in....

EA didn't have to do this. I'm glad they did. Well done. (still won't pre-order shit and will wait for reviews, though! :D).

I'd call you cynical but with the things we've seen coming out of EA lately, I honestly believe we're right to be paranoid about their potential manipulations.

The EA hate runs strong and deep.

In regards to EA's donations:

Good things often happen for the wrong reasons. PR or not, it is a positive for those affected. That's what matters. Not EA, not PR, just the families and those affected.

I would certainly take good things happening for the wrong reasons rather than no good at all.

Lot's of things I don't like about EA but I do think this is a good thing on their part. Like most have said, they didn't have to. Furthermore as a PR stunt it would be underappreciated since outside of the deaths, a lot of gaming stuff falls under the radar of mainstream media coverage. Sure Disney has gotten into it but even then that's just overwatch and a few others.

This would be awesome if it were any other company other than EA. I don't believe they care about the people who died one single bit.

Never forget, Westwood Studios.

I honestly don't expect any publicly traded company to care about its consumers more than it comes to buying their products. Just my rule of thumb. I'm sure their employees would of course, but the corporate juggernaut? Not so much.

That's not a cynical view of looking at things imo. I just don't buy the good guy PR. I'm glad EA donated though.

Let's just go through the typical politically correct moves recommended by the pr department so the ceo can keep his job and continue to rake in the millions.

Man wtf is wrong with some of you, sure EA is a bad game studio for the most part but your letting your blind hate overshadow a decent almost human act.

Honestly all EA really had to do was release some bs statement about thoughts and prayers and a "promise" to try and prevent this from happening. Instead they are going way above to actually help people, PR move or not this is not the time to let your distaste for a company overshadow a truly good act.

Corporate America is not motivated by by acts of kindness. Sorry to break reality to you but it is motivated by the bottom line. Period. You may now go back to your wonderful alternate reality of puppy dog tails and rainbows.

But you can definitely say that when Corporate America DOES acts of kindness, people take it as cynicism. Thanks for the "lesson" but this is just a company spending actual, real cash to help folks who need help.

I can only speak from my years of experience. I'm sure you have insider information and understand the exact motivation, thanks for the "lesson".

I've been in executive positions and we have donated for the sake of donating. Of course being in finance I tried to limit it (had too) but not all of corporate America is the evil empire. Regardless of your opinion of EA or your perception of the underlying reasoning for this action can we all agree this is not a "bad thing"?

It seems the blind hatred of EA is blinding many that this isnt a bad move...
