I know a lot of people have tired of WoW over the years and I'm on of them, however, the latest expansion has sold more copies on launch day than any prior expansion of the venerable MMO. Blizzard is claiming 3.4 million copies sold on launch day and this is good news for the company since it's been reported that subscriber numbers were dropping in 2015. It's looking like the Legion expansion may have plugged the dike and more players are coming back for Battle for Azeroth. Maybe the additional content offered in the last expansion is paying dividends for Blizzard and WoW might make a resurgence.

World of Warcraft looked like it could be trouble in 2015, when subscription numbers were falling as players were stuck in one of the game’s least popular expansions, Warlords of Draenor. But Blizzard turned things around with the sixth expansion, Legion, which gave players more end-game content. The goodwill from Legion is carrying over to Battle for Azeroth.

I know a lot of people who started up WoW again for this expansion and are enjoying it. If it wasn't for the subscription...I would probably be playing it. I just can't dedicate enough of time to the game to justify me paying monthly for it.

So far i like it, i enjoyed legion every thought it dragged on way too long

Its now free to play, to an extent. A buddy of mine and I were going to play, but you can't create parties unless you pay....

Skipped MoP and Cat, came back for Legion. They made some nice changes but then I looked through the smoke and mirrors and saw the grind fest and times walls coming back when it came to end game content raiding. Not this time Blizzard.

I'd played through all the Legion content and re-activated my sub for BfA. So far it's been a lot of fun, especially with the focus on war mode pvp interactions in world quests.

...Honestly the best part about this is that the guy is ranting and raving that he didn't put enough women in his game about slaughtering thousands as a one man army of justice :D
Like that whole part? Totally fucking acceptable. But no WOMEN doing it!?!?!?!?!

We're doomed as a species, fyi.

Wrong thread bro ;)

I thought you didn't need to pay for the base game anymore but still had to pay the monthly subscription and if you want this specific expansion, the price of that content?

What I have read as the primary trigger that brought many people back is the return to the roots of Warcraft. Alliance vs. Horde.

Legion was awesome. A breath of fresh air for WoW. BFA is shaping up to be even better.

I enjoyed the hell out of legion and so far I have enjoyed Battle for Azeroth as well. I came back to wow when legion was nearing release.

Same. I've been playing since launch with a few extended breaks in Cata and MoP. Legion was good and so far BfA has been really good.

I don't know if they completely removed the "free to level 20" portion but you can now play from Vanilla through Legion without buying the game client or any of the expansions. You only need to pay the sub.

Really? I liked Legion a lot, I may have to come back and give this one a try...

I was recently looking at some WoW machinima, and holy crap the graphics are way worse than in my memory (in reality, unchanged, of course). They need to do an Overwatch-style revamp on the entire game.

My wife has never stopped playing. Now she has our daughters playing and they want me to start playing again. I haven't played since half way through Wrath. I could give it a look, I could join my girls in their demented little girl power guild.

The trouble is that my girls are all filthy casuals.

Yeah thats not going to happen. WoW still has tons and tons of users...graphics are clearly not stopping them from playing. The game probably runs on any common laptop/desktop these days (which is probably a pro to Blizzard). It would be a massive undertaking to revamp all the textures on all the maps in WoW.

Their textures are decent, I was thinking poly count. I do realize it isn't going to happen short of a massive revamp one of these expansions. If they want to keep the game going for another generation of gamers, I do think they need to do it though.

I really doubt that WoW is doing fine at all. Day one sales is not a good indicator of a games success.

dear EA please create us a modern client for ultima online that has beautiful 2d art and 60fps (not 15!!) and non-diablo inspired junk system (dnd inspired)... oh wait EA hates their gamers :( and employees only get to work 100 hours a week

If it wasn't for $45/mo my family would play it. I'll eventually come back and play it but I have a huge backlog to get through first.

Subs keep me away from games. I played it in beta and loved it. But could not stomach the monthly charge.

overwatch style? uh.... i was thinking more like black desert online or lost ark quality .....

I bought the expansion, renewed my sub..... and haven't played a lick of new content. Always wanted to roll a lock and I've been enjoying the newbie experience all over again.

Though if you do a bit of farming, you can make enough money to buy WoW Tokens which are each good for 30 days of game time. They are like 122K Gold right now, doesn’t seem too bad.

a decade plus game still making a ton of $$. Whether you are a fanboy or a hater, you can't argue the fact that this game is doing something no other game has done or will probably ever do....

I haven't played in years, but was thinking about spending another 3 months in this, or in ffxiv, since I haven't played any content from heavensward and on. . .

I'll probably end up running ffxiv, but am up to persuasion.

That's exactly how I feel about the semi-resurgence of WoW over the last expansion. I got out, damn it, being a top arena team was almost like a damned job. I got out, I threw away my paraphernalia. I haven't held a mouse laser under a spoon in years!

I. Got. Clean.

My own wife, a woman who is supposed to have my back is the one trying to stick the needle in my arm.

well, thinking about it...not entirely sure i wanna, though. for the last 4 expansions, i've played enough to level anywhere from 1 - 5 toons to max level, then i get bored of the grind and cancel. not sure i want to go through that again.

I haven't played since the early days of Legion, but I have a CE of BfA sitting on my computer desk, still unopened. I typically only like playing when other friends are playing, but so far not many have rejoined.

My question is, is there more cross-server play? The friends I do have playing aren't on my long time home server, but I don't really want to go for a server transfer in case others come back that are on my server. I remember in Legion and a bit earlier there started to be more cross-server chat and some play (like Dungeons), but not sure how well that has evolved.

When you join a party you cross over so you can quest together. Dungeons raids pvp etc all work because they are on a separate instance server. Bind on equip or non-bound items same with gold cannot be traded across servers though, but if a boss drops a bind on pickup gear piece you can trade it to your buddy in the group if you want. Guilds work cross server now for paired or clustered servers (in my case bloodhoof and duskwood). Pvp and pve realms are now liquidated, Pvp is a toggle now, if it is on you can only see other players with it on and vice versa.

I enjoy the game. To those thinking blizzard is suffering with their continued millions of subscribers you have got to be kidding me.

As to the sub cost.. I prefer it. I think removing the sub cost ruined SWTOR. I don't play it for all the griefers and kiddo's coming in there to be idiots because it's free. If they had to actually PAY some money to play and getting banned or locked out meant something they wouldn't be this badly behaved.

That all sounds great! I guess I need to get on adding the key and give it a shot. Thank you!

I agree, but I do wish they offered better incentives for paying in advance. Or, had a system where you could buy a set number of hours per month. We have two kids, and I imagine a lot of those of us that have been playing WoW since launch are now parents or soon to be, or just have busy lives even without kids. The current pay in advance discount is washed out if I have a busy month and can't play just one of the 12 months.

I would kill for an old AOL style "30 day equivalent" number of hours you could buy. If I can't play one month, or only get on once or twice, I don't feel my $15 was basically wasted.

I would be much more willing to have a standing sub than I am now.

I agree. F2P has never been an enjoyable experience for me.

Actually I would pay 20 bucks a month if it was a 30 day (x24 hour) play time. But you know they would just make the grind to level and get gear THAT MUCH LONGER and harder. It wouldn't be casual friendly because then it is in their interest to make sure you play the game as much as possible and make it JUST enjoyable enough that you don't bail after an hour and a half.
