Looking to upgrade my r9 290.

Would like to stay under 400$

Taichi x370
Ryzen 5 1600
EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G3
G.SKILL Flare X Series 16GB
1080p

Primarily for gaming.

So it looks like I could get a 1080 for under 400$, used. Would this be worth it? I have never bought a used gpu.

1080 used or a 1070 ti new. You only need a 1070 for 1080p 120hz 1060 6gb for 60hz. Thats with current games and older

Sounds like a good deal. Make sure there's nothing wrong with it and enjoy your new card :)

If you play @ 1080p 60 Hz I'd recommend a NEW GTX 1070 Tii
It will have a 3 year warranty and a 1080 won't give you smoother gaming compared to a 1070 Ti

Ok I will look at some of those. I am playing on a 60hz. I will see if I can find a 1070 ti under 400

a new 1070 ti looks like I would need to spend around 500$. Would it be worth the extra hundred for my needs or just stick with a 1060 6gb? (which are 300ish)

Edit: I stand corrected I am finding 1070ti for under 400 brand new.

evga 1080 was on sale twice in the last week for just under $400. If you are patient it will happen again. Or 1070ti has been on sale a few times for under $350 if you don't think you need the 1080 and want to save a little cash.

well I don't have anything better than a 1080p 60hz to play on. So its my understanding that the 1080 wouldn't be worth it. But I guess I will be patient and look for a good sale. anything under 400 I would be happy with.

Any particular preference for the brands? I saw a new gigabyte 1070ti for 325$ on ebay.

Why not a a Radeon RX 580? Should be able to handle stuff at that res and refresh rate. Plus, you'd be giving RTG (Radeon technology group) your money to support them. (which they badly need nowadays) :)

Just wait a few more weeks. The new/next gen Nvidia cards are about to be released and the market will soon be flooded with used 1070's, 1080's and 1080Ti's as folks decide to upgrade, bringing the cost of the older cards way down.

Yea I have been on radeon for the past 15 years. I have no problem with them. you are just the first to suggest radeon.

Yea this sounds like a plan. I need another week or so anyways before I actually purchase it.

With a $400 budget it just seems like a good idea to get something faster. Nobody recommended a GTX1060 either. Both will work great for 1080p 60hz and be around $200-220.

Vega56 price is just not coming down as much as other cards. It is slightly slower than a 1070ti but costs as much as a 1080.

Getting a 1080 will make you happy now and keep you happy well into the future at 60hZ 1080p. It will be many years before that card starts to show it's age at that resolution/refresh rate.
