Disney Wants to Dump Star Wars Boss Kathleen Kennedy, but There’s a Problem

I guess let them finish ep 9 since the new trilogy is now hosed beyond salvage. I won't go see it, and I don't know how they would pick up the pieces and turn out a respectable movie.

Put a pause on all the side stories / origin stories. This isn't Marvel, we don't need a Star Wars movie every 6 months. The only sad part here is this would likely kill any hope for an Obi Wan movie, and I was kind of looking forward to seeing Ewan back in action. But it's an acceptable sacrifice for the greater good, and could spare us from endless spinoffs like "The Emporer gets his groove back" or "Rebels of the lost Ark" etc etc.

When 9 is done, fire everyone and start fresh and go for KOTOR timeline. Or you know, I guess you could skip 9 and go straight to this, but the awful new trilogy will need closure at some point... might as well get it over with (like going for a root canal or a colonoscopy.... needed but unpleasant and unwanted)

I think this trilogy is beyond salvage. TFA was bad enough in retrospect but could have been made better via Episode VIII. Since Lucasfilm doubled down on the stupid crap and utterly failed with Episode VIII, I doubt IX can be made good enough to fix all the bad crap in the previous films. They would have to spend most of Episode IX doing damage control to pull that off. That may not work either as it would make a really long movie or necessitate a fourth movie to wrap up the trilogy. That's a huge risk as well because it might not pay off in the long run and given the level of damage done to the franchise and the brand, its more than likely just throwing good money after bad.

This is nonsense. If the movies were good, no one would be complaining about this. Franchise fatigue is only a problem when something has dropped in quality as a result. When you watch a TV show with 22 episodes in a season you are watching 8x the content of a single annual movie release. The amount of installments isn't the issue here. The quality and content of the ones we've seen lately is.

Funny, but again this isn't the answer.

I'd agree that the creative team at Lucasfilm needs to be culled in a big way. I don't think the "KOTOR" timeline is the answer either. For starters, it won't happen because of BioWare's involvement in all of that. There could easily be issues in drawing from a works not entirely owned by Disney. BioWare was bought by EA, and that relationship is not only strained, but might not be profitable to pull from. I think Disney would rather do its own thing in the form of a total reboot or use a totally different point in time than draw from KOTOR beyond the most basic references, which we've already seen in Rebels.

And again, the KOTOR timeline isn't the answer here. Drawing from an established work sets certain expectations and opens Disney up to potential backlash over casting decisions and boxes them into making the story follow that of the game series in some way. What's good for a game isn't necessarily good for a movie. Not only that, but there would have to be serious changes in the story because Revan's story doesn't end the way hardly anyone would want it to. Revan was imprisoned by Vitiate for 300 years, (not in stasis), went insane, got split into two halves, one ghost, one not, waged war on the galaxy again, turned into a total maniac before resurrecting the defeated Emperor Vitiate and dying a total loser. Of course, Disney can make changes but they have to be careful as to how and what gets changed. Its better to do something new and totally separate from the established Star Wars lore as it frees Disney from expectations beyond making a story feel like Star Wars in some sense.

So they announced the original actor for Lando will be in ep9... So we know 2 things: his character will die, and he will either have a good time or a hard time while kissing men, women and everything in between human and alien, including robots.

The next block buster will be "Fun with Jar Jar Binks" and you will have to like it. You will have to love it.

Are you trying to suggest that Lucasfilm doesn't own KOTOR? Oh, you must surely be mistaken. Disney owns that, and owns it so hard that I'm sure the reason EA paid so much for Star Wars exclusive license was to have access to sell it.

Disney doesn't own KOTOR outright. Don't be obtuse. EA/BioWare has certain rights under that contract. Even Disney doesn't get to do anything they want with that property. That's why Marvel can't use some of their own characters in their films. For example, Disney had to work out a deal with Sony to use Spiderman in the MCU.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

I'll have to disagree with you. Disney owns Lucasfilm outright and Lucasfilm own the story rights for Star Wars and its derivatives. Just because EA and Marvel have work-for-hire agreements with them doesn't change that.

The solution seems pretty simple.

Bring someone in for the sole purpose of cleaning house and taking the SJW heat for it.
Fire them to save face and let them keep their contractual golden parachute.
Hire the person you want to actually take over.

I understand Disney owns Lucasfilm outright. That doesn't mean that Lucasfilm and by extension Disney, no longer have to abide by earlier contract obligations. There is a high degree of probability that EA/BioWare would have to be paid royalties by Disney to use any characters that were created for KOTOR and all related materials. In fact, royalties having to be paid to the original creator's of a given character are pretty common. Whether or not this is cost prohibitive in this case isn't known. In any case, I seriously doubt that Disney / Lucasfilm is going to bother using characters created by EA/BioWare in any up coming films. They have no incentive to do so. They dropped nearly the entire fucking EU just so they didn't have to be bound by its constraints. I doubt they'll back track on that to get into something as obscure as KOTOR characters and going back to a time nearly 4,000 years before Episode IV.

Depends on how many Colt 45's he had before shoots...

Sad, but likely true.

Darth Jar-Jar would be much more watchable than TLJ and I'm not even kidding. That's how fucked this franchise is.

Darth Jar Jar would be a riot. "Meesa gonna show you the true power of the darkttthhh side! "

Rumor was that was the plan but GL chickened out. The "proof" offered was that he could be seen moving his lips prior to certain characters deciding something out loud. There is precedent for it in the tropes Star Wars leans on. Would've made the prequels more interesting!

"Jar Jar is the key to all this."

I hear George Lucas wrote a scene for the Solo movie and is helping JJ Abrams with Episode 9...are they easing him back into a bigger role?...sounds like they didn't realize how important his vision was for the overall franchise and the stories have sucked without him...total lack of imagination and world building without him...the guy had his faults (dialogue mainly) but he was a visionary

I hear Thrawn is going to be in Episode 9 and it would be nice to have Lucas create his story...

Thrawn is not going to be in Episode 9. Disney threw away the expanded universe.

rumors strongly suggest that he will be in it...Disney announced the official cast a few weeks ago and Richard E. Grant is in it and the internet is going crazy with Grant= Thrawn

While Disney did throw away the expanded universe, there are elements which have been brought from the old EU into the current canon. Thrawn was shown in Star Wars Rebels and is therefore canon. However, his fate from the final episode is unknown. It's left rather ambiguous.

How about....Star Wars is shit!

The premise is shit, the acting is shit, the screenplay is shit. It's all shit. Just let it die in peace so we can move along. Fuckall to do with ID politics. It's shit.

But how do you really feel? Heheh... Not in too much disagreement here... I guess for me the frustrating thing is that it could be great.. with good writers, writing with RESPECT to the body of work such as it is, SW could have been a great, even deep, sci fi movie series... It needed dedicated writers , preferable to be writing for adults.. but even if writing for kids, if done with respect, SW could have been great and memorable... Right now is memorable for the wrong reasons.. and its shit heheh.

I almost think the intent was to destroy Star Wars. Mission accomplished.

Someone can always do worse I guess but we can keep hoping they will turn the ship around.

I think Disney may take a more hands on approach with them because Lucasfilm has shown that it can't operate without significant oversight. While we don't really know how much oversight Disney truly has over Marvel, it strikes me as a company that buys other companies and lets them continue to do what they did to become successful in the first place. Disney doesn't seem like an EA like corporate entity that guts, absorbs and twists everything they buy until its a soulless shell of what made it great. My take on the situation is that unfortunately, Disney's hands off approach allowed Kathleen Kennedy and her cronies far too much latitude resulting in the brand turning into a broken shell of what it once was.

It already has. I would say most of the die hard Star Wars fans I personally know and some online are pretty much done with it. TFA and TLJ were both letdowns. None of us even went to see Han Solo and I haven't seen near as much noise about the next movie. It just seems like people no longer care.

Kathleen Kennedy and the cronies at LucasFilm should be drummed out of the entertainment business forever, put on every industry blacklist. They took a platinum coated golden goose and turned it into a big stinking turd. Good luck trying to get me back.
