So,

I'm a little surprised there isn't a Pie thread here yet.

Who is using it thus far and what do you think?

I just got it on my 1st gen Pixel.

I feel like the new adaptive brightness and adaptive battery features are nice, and should help with battery life.

Everything else I'm kind of meh about.

I don't care for the styling updates. I have e no interest in gestures, but öucbut öuclily those aren't forced on you. And let's just say I won't be switching away from the Nova launcher any time soon.

I'm looking for a way to switch back to the classic app switcher though. I find the new one takes up the entire screen per app, and it takes longer to quickly switch to the app I want. I much prefer the the classic "stack of cards" version.

Anyone know if it is possibky to switch back somehow? I looked though tje options and couldn't find anything.

Yeah, got the update installed yesterday. Have a 1st gen pixel as well. Seems ok. Screenshots are easier now..... Clearing all the clutter is different. Otherwise, in daily use, no change. Haven't explored gestures or indoor maps, digital wellness stuff. AI smarts hasn't kicked in. Hasn't figured out I hate spam robo callers.....

Or anybody else here with a Pixel that updated to Pie?
I have a couple internal web servers.

I've noticed an issue since upgrading to Pie.
I have not yet figured out the frequency, but it tends to always prefer Google DNS even when connected to wireless.
I disable and re-enable wireless, and it works again for a short amount of time.

I went as far as finding a terminal emulator, installed the dnstools, and nsconfig servers only reports Google DNS.

Was not an issue with Oreo and it's getting really irritating.
Also, phone auto rebooted on me last night.

Any where to view system uptime?
Cannot find that anywhere anymore. Curious to find out if it's rebooting more frequently.

Android keeps progressing, keeps adding all these new crazy features that most people will never have any use for, and always with the battery optimization BS. New phones come out, with more efficient SoCs, displays, faster storage, etc, and the battery life STILL FUCKING SUCKS even in spite of the more efficient hardware coupled with the supposedly better battery optimized versions of Android.

I mean really, it's like none of the companies making phones nor Google seems to have any fucking clue whatsoever. I remember owning a Galaxy S7 Active a few years ago, 4000 mAh battery, damned phone would last me well into 3 days on a single charge. When I bought a ZeroLemon 8500 mAh battery case for it I could go nearly 7 days on a full charge of both batteries and that's with about 4 hours of SoT per day on average.

I remember owning an LG G3 a few years ago as well, Snapdragon 800 SoC, absolutely magnificent device, 12+ hours of SoT. OnePlus One I owned, Snapdragon 800 powered, 13+ hours of SoT.

We're not progressing forward with battery life in modern up-to-date smartphones, we're regressing.

With the exception of going from a Note 2 to the Galaxy Nexus, battery life has got considerably better with each upgrade I've had so far (which is every 18-24 months or so). But I'd say until they radically improve battery tech, there's not too much they can do to make a big difference. The problem with all of these newer SoC upgrades in power efficiency too, is that it mostly applies when the chip is under nearly max load, which is probably only like 10% or less of the time you use the phone, so while it's nearly idling the rest of the time it's off charge that newer SoC isn't sipping much less power than its predecessor(s).

Are those SoT numbers for the G3 and OP One with a Zero Lemon battery attached to them? Because unless you just kept the screen on a static image where the phone was otherwise idle the whole time, I find those numbers pretty unbelievable without an oversized battery or something, hah.

It's working well on my Pixel 2 XL. The phone feels snappier and smoother. I don't like the horizontal app switcher and was very glad to see an easy way to convert back to the vertical. See link below if interested. I also prefer the old notifications. Pie's look more like iOS, to me.

No, that's with using the phone during the course of the day, watcing videos on Netflix/Amazon Prime, etc. I'm not the only person that had such battery life with those devices either which is why the were so popular, especially the OPO. I really miss that device, it was the fastest most responsive and smoothest operating phone I've ever used, even compared to the best of the best on the market today.

I think it may be due to Private DNS being set to Automatic by default.
I just changed it to Off and we'll see if it behaves any better.

Yeah, I'm calling pics or shens on that then.. looking up an XDA thread on the OP One, most people were getting 4-7 hours SoT with it, with some pushing past that with custom ROMs/kernels.

I'd be curious to know how much battery drain is due to background operations designed to harvest your data and submit it to google or the maker of any running app...

Yeah, I'm sure there's always background processes/telemetry using resources and battery as well, but I would be surprised if it accounted for more than 5% of overall battery usage. But it's hard to say when you see so much hidden under the guise of "Android OS" or "Android system" in the battery stats (which I've always found incredibly annoying).

Yeah, the OPO had good battery life since it was in the Snapdragon 800/801/805 years where many smartphones had good battery life. But that's still 4-7 hour SoT when you look at most people's reports which is consistent with the two OPO's that I've used.

(Incidentally, I still have access to those OPO's and they're certainly not remotely as smooth as my Pixel 2 XL despite running a lighter and older version of Android).

I don't know, battery life does not suck on my Note 8. With its "paltry" 3300mAh battery, I can get 8 hours SOT on day's heavy usage. See here for the screenshot.

Phone gets hot during use...never did this before.

Messenger is just horrible. Texts dont send and it crashes.

Everything is SLOW, slow startup, slow apps.

Really sad, I loved my phone and its garbage now.

This is not a typical experience.

There are some things I don't care for that changed with the Pie update, but everything on my first gen Pixel runs just as smoothly as it ever did.

I'm guessing something went wrong with your update.

I'd back up your data, wipe it, and write a fresh image to it directly from Google using ADB.

It sucks to have to do this, as we all have our phones set up just the way we like them and have lots of data on them, but whenever you run an update on any device or computer, there is always a small risk that something gets messed up.
