Android 9 Pie is out and it contains a lot of new features. First of all Essential Phone users have day one access to Android 9 Pie as Essential Products was one of seven device maker partners that enrolled their flagship devices into the beta for the software update. The update features new gestures and UI, enhanced audio, background restrictions on app battery usage, the ability to view HDR VP9 Video, new HEIF image compression and more. The new feature that caught my eye was the many ways that your interactions with your phone will involve machine learning (ML) in the future. The neural AI will learn what you use the most, and which apps correspond to certain actions, so it can have those highlighted and at the ready. Multi-camera streaming sounds fun!

Today we announced that 6 of our top partners are joining us to release Android P Beta on their devices -- Sony Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, Vivo X21UD and X21, and Essential PH-1. We're inviting early adopters and developers around the world to try Android P Beta on any of these devices -- as well as on Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, and Pixel XL. You can see the full list of supported partner and Pixel devices at android.com/beta.

The whole "Pie" name, not digging it. I was thinking Popsicle would have been a better choice this time out, I know a lot of folks were hoping for Popcorn but that's not really a dessert by most standards. Oh well, I'll never see it on my older devices since I use older stuff, and unfortunately the primary device I use these days will never have an unlocked bootloader so, bleh, phone manufacturers SUCK. :D

Neural AI? Sounds like complicated fuzzy logic processing needing server farms. Couldn't possibly just be a store last actions in a table kind of thing.

Thought google didn't know enough about you? Android 9. Now with more complete behavioral profiling! Advertisers, line up!!

A new dark theme is welcome, for sure. Improved battery, too, though that has never been an issue for me ever.

The image compression and stuff is all nice, too. The updates are smallish but that's because we're getting to the point of maximum utility from our phones.

Don't care about the name, annoys me that 60% of all comments whenever there's a new Android is what it will be called. Maybe with Q they'll just call it 10 and stick to numbers. Makes it so much easier to figure out how many generations back the OS is, too.

Are you kidding me? Geeezus I barely just got the Oreo update from verizon (2 weeks ago). So probably next year we will get this Pie update. Nice!

btw, I can't keep up with all these android updates, yikes im old.

Still rocking 5.1 on my LG G4, and I probably will for a few years to come too. That is, if the hardware keeps holding out. My software needs on a phone haven't changed since my galaxy S4 I got in 2013.

I agree, but maybe Lollipop was too similar to Popsicle. They could have gone with Parfait or Panna Cotta or something.

Just got it on my launch week Pixel XL...Hope this fixes the annoying phone app update that keeps removing my visual voicemail.

Installing on my P2XL. I had no issues before, no idea why I am installing now. I guess I am just asking for trouble. Lol.

I'm sure I'll get it soon enough. Still on Android 9 ;)

Pretty sure that's what the DP4 release was called

Awesome. I'll be getting this on my unlocked Samsung flagship Galaxy S9+...

*punches calculator, scribbles down formulas, updates excel spreadsheet*

... never.

I haven't had a Samsung since my S4. Couldn't get updates EVER.

I miss my note. Been a user from N1-4. Unfortunately, once you have a straight android phone, nothing else compares. The phone is just so smooth. It does not have any lag for simple things like scrolling web pages, gmaps, etc. Sure the new notes are fast, but next to a pixel you can see the lag. I dont care about the updates, but I very much so miss the s pen. It was so useful.

All you Fandroids here can enjoy this new OS, in about a years time, if your lucky, or buy a new phone... lol

Was Bill Cosby unavailable to partner with them on Android 9 Pudding?
You might experience some serious sluggishness if Cosby was involved... probably would have slipped your phone an e-roofie or something...

And with that, the eye candy of Android 9 looks nice. But I'm all set with now "neural" Google is becoming, and I'm quite happy with my iPhone and iOS 11, soon to be 12.
Besides, I've sunk enough money into the Google ecosphere over the past nearly four years prior to swapping to an iPhone, that it doesn't really make sense for me to go back.

Yawn, meet the new Android OS...same as the old Android OS...

All those 'new features' that in reality make little difference.

So far so good, upgraded yesterday afternoon. Although I don't really notice too much outside of a little UI changes. I like how the volume pops up next to the actual volume keys. It seems much more responsive on android auto now too, so that's a very welcome surprise.

Still getting used to the clock being on the left. Also disabled the Adaptive Brightness. Everytime I would wake my phone up, I'd have to wait several seconds for it to come up to brightness. And it still wasn't bright enough. I'm probably doing something wrong.

You're looking at it wrong.

Because TouchWiz and whatever LG is slinging for Android overlays.

Oh, I understand why they are slow. They need to add their bloat before sending it off.

That used to be the norm. You would buy an Android phone and you may never see an update ever again unless you had a Google phone. Not like that anymore.

Good for you, and the other 3 people than can also upgrade...

Kinda bitchy aren't you? Let me guess, you are here to report on how Apple is simply the greatest because X, Y, and Z...I left Apple very recently and I'm glad for it. They can't fix simple bugs on their "latest and greatest".

I'm on nougat and stuck on N 7.0 cuz Motorola ended updates for my phone. One feature I wanted from Oreo was the draw once down options icon implementation.

Well it has come to an end of serching.

I present you mns = material notification shader from Google play. Has nougat/Oreo/pie settings option.
Also power shader is a good app as well. I bought both.
Mns is free but purchase is nessacary for certain features which I dont mind.

Pie now has a lockdown mode that's supposed to be like the option to mash the power button 5 times on an iPhone to disable fingerprint unlock, for security reasons.

But I still have to look at the screen, and in that same menu the power off button that's been there is still just as good of an option. Swing and a miss, Android.

Also, there's weather on the lock screen now and I can't figure out how to disable it. Guesses?
