Power consumption between 290x and 580

Recently had my 290x die on me and have thrown in a 270 for now to get by.

I was looking in the used market locally and saw a MSI rx 580 4gb oc armor for $280 Canadian ( looks like it’s $380 CDN brand new). Seems like a decent deal but I just want to make sure it won’t use more power than my old 290x did. It looks to me like the 580 might actually draw less power but I wasn’t looking at side by sides so a confirmation would be great.

Bonus Question: the 270 is actually playing what I need it to these days (by turning the settings down) so would it be better to just hold off? Haven’t been paying attention to the market as I wasn’t planning on a new vid card purchase.
 
If you can make do, make do. If you need the performance, then go ahead.

I would at least hold out until something like a new game comes out that you've been looking forward to.

That said, the used market right now can be pretty enticing. If you find a good deal, jump.

Otherwise, there will always newer cards to be had if you choose to wait.
 
I'd hold till ngreedia launches if you can. Might make a Vega or 1080 or 1070 closer to your budget. They've already hit 425 new for v64s. Bit more power but far bigger performance jump.
580 will use less power than both though and be similar perf, memory access intensive games may give the 290x an edge though with dat phat bus.
 
I dont understand why you would even have to wonder such a thing. Literally a few seconds of research would show the 580 uses no where near the power of the 290x. The 290x was a very power hungry high end 290 watt card and the 580 is a 185 watt mid range card.
 
Thanks for the quick replies and confirming what I saw when I did a hasty search on power consumption. Sounds like the mining market might be turning a bit of a corner and there’s some new cards on the horizon so I think I will run the 270 for a bit.
 
I just bought a 2nd hand Sapphire Nitro 580 8GB here for 220 shipped. No way I would pay 280 for a 4GB.
 
Used 980 TIs are where it's at, IMO.

Near Vega/1070 performance, but I grabbed one for $320 almost a year ago. And it has enough VRAM to age better than a Fury X (which is almost impossible to find used anyway).
 
wait till nvidia launches so you can get a vega56 which is actually an upgrade.
 
Just a side note...
I'm currently upgrading an Ivy Bridge office machine for a kid to have a gaming computer.
Today is stress test burn in day.
Stuck a 270 in it that I had collecting dust in the closet and I have to say... It still does pretty well.
CPU is a 3570S.
Granted the monitor is 1600x900 but it is chewing up everything I throw at it on high or medium.
Warm fuzzies.

Used markets can vary quite a bit depending where you are. I suspect you missed the two references to Canadian dollars in the OP.
 
ELox, where in Canada are you? I've seen offers for RX580 8GB for $280 CDN used in the Toronto area.

Having said that, if the 270 is holding up for you and you can wait then you shouldn't buy at all right now - new cards will eventually arrive, the longer you can hold out the better.

I’m over in BC and about 5 hours from Vancouver so there’s not much in my area in the used market. Thanks for the advice.

in most cases the 580 will be slightly better

Check MemoryExpress (Canadian store..) They have XFX 8G cards on for 350 right now. Awesome deal.. gaming and mining bios.. no flash really just solid cards. As to wattage.. the 580 comes in at less voltages then the 290x.. and isn't as much of a heatscore.

To be fair, there are very few cards that matched, let alone exceeded, a 290x' power envelope...;)

The 580 uses way less power than a 290X. Like 100 watts less, I think, as the official spec. Performance of the 580 is just a hair behind the 290X, as I recall.

I would hold off with the 270 for a month or two, if I were you. I suspect there's about to be a glut of used nVidia 10 series cards, which are now also sitting on store shelves new, as I understand it, meaning you could conceivably score a much better deal on one new or used, as folks start upgrading to the 20 series.

Edit: Someone else mentioned use 9 series cards. That's an option too, especially if you're getting by with a 4GB card.
